Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Miriam is the first woman identified in the Bible as a prophetess. Who was the second woman given such a distinction, as per Judges 4:4?

Answer: Deborah

There's no doubt Deborah was a spark plug who made things happen. Her story is told in the fourth and fifth chapters of Judges. In addition to being the only female judge of pre-monarchic Israel, Scripture reports she was a prophetess. She is remembered for a spectacular military victory over Jabin and Sisera. According to Judges 4:2, Jabin king of Canaan ruled over the Israelites who were cruelly oppressed by Sisera, the commander of his army.

Things changed dramatically, however, when Deborah rose to power. The Israelites, led by Deborah and her general Barak, scored a decisive military victory over Sisera and their freedom was gained. According to Judges 4:16, "all Sisera's troops fell by the sword; not a man was left."
2. Sarah was the first woman in the Bible to give her servant Hagar as a wife to her husband Abraham to produce children. Who was the second woman to give her servant to her husband to sleep with to produce children, as per Genesis 30:3?

Answer: Rachel

The correct answer is Rachel. She was unable to conceive and according to Genesis 30:3, Rachel gave Bilhah to Jacob to sleep with. Bilhah was the mother of Dan and Naphtali, as per Genesis 35:25. Later, Rachel's sister Leah would give her servant Zilpah to Jacob to sleep with.

Genesis 30:9, in the NIV Bible, states: "When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife." According to Genesis 35:26, Zilpah gave birth to two boys -- Gad and Asher.
3. The first mention of singing in the Bible is Genesis 37:21, in which Laban tells Jacob he should've told him he was leaving so a farewell party could have been held. What's the second mention of singing in Scripture, as per the 15th chapter of Exodus?

Answer: Moses and Miriam celebrating victory over the Egyptians.

The song of Moses, followed by the song of Miriam, appears in the 15th chapter of Exodus and is the second mention of singing in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible.

According to Scripture, the Egyptian army drowned when the LORD parted the Red Sea, enabling the Israelites to make an exodus out of Egypt while on a 40-year journey to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. After the Israelites had crossed over, the Red Sea closed in on the Egyptian army that was in pursuit, as per the 14th chapter of Exodus. The Israelites responded by having a glorious celebration, highlighted with the song of Moses and the song of Miriam.
4. Absalom was the first son of David who unsuccessfully attempted to replace him as king. Who was the second son who unsuccessfully attempted to replace him, although not by violent means like the tactics used by Absalom? (Check out the first chapter of 1 Kings.)

Answer: Adonijah

Adonijah is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Adonijah had set himself up as king when David was elderly and basically out of it. However, Bathsheba and Nathan were able to convince David to use his royal power to have Adonijah removed and Solomon set up as king.

Later in Scripture, Solomon would order the death penalty for Adonijah. (See the second chapter of 2 Kings.)
5. Numbers 10:1-5 states, in part, "The LORD said to Moses: 'Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out. When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. If only one is sounded, the leaders -- the heads of the clans of Israel -- are to assemble before you. When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out." What is to happen on the sounding of a second trumpet blast?

Answer: The camps on the south are to set out.

Every quiz seems to have an extremely difficult question and I strongly suspect such was the case with this one. The correct answer is that the camps on the south are to set out. The story of the trumpets involves the exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt, while on their 40-year journey to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. The ninth chapter of Numbers tells of the Israelites being led by a cloud, a dramatic symbol of the active presence of God.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the trumpets: "Made of hammered silver, these instruments were straight with a flaring bell, like the post horns of Medieval Europe. Since they did not have the valves, they were played like a bugle. The pattern was as follows: The cloud would begin to move the trumpets would sound, and the people would begin to break camp and move out within their ordered ranks. When the ark, the symbol of Divine Presence, was moved, Moses recited the words of the song of triumph."
6. According to Scripture, Jacob took advantage of his brother Esau on two different occasions. First he took Esau's birthright. What's the second thing Jacob stole from Esau?

Answer: Esau's blessing

In addition to taking Esau's birthright, Jacob stole his blessing.

The story of Jacob taking Esau's birthright is told in the 25th chapter of Genesis. According to Scripture, Esau sold it for a pot of stew.

Then with the help of his conniving mother Rebekah, Jacob tricked Issac into giving him the blessing Esau was supposed to receive. The account is found in the 27th chapter of Genesis.

Genesis 27:36, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Esau said, 'Isn't he rightly named Jacob? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!'"

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Jacob means "he grasps the heel", a Hebrew idiom for "he takes advantage of" or "he deceives".

After Jacob received Esau's blessing, Scripture reports Jacob fled as his brother was plotting to kill him.

The accounts of Jacob obtaining Esau's birthright and his blessing are among the best known stories in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible.
7. The 41st chapter of Genesis tells of the Pharaoh of Egypt having two dreams. In the first dream, the Pharaoh saw seven fattened cows followed by seven gaunt cows. What did he see in his second dream?

Answer: Seven heads of healthy grain followed by seven heads of scorched grain.

The correct answer is seven heads of healthy grain followed by seven heads of scorched grain.

Genesis 41:1-7 in the NIV Bible gives this account of the Pharaoh's dreams: "When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile, when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among the reeds. After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up. He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk. After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted -- thin and scorched by the east wind. The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up; it had been a dream."

Scripture goes on to tell of Joseph being able to interpret the dreams and then going from being a prisoner to becoming the second most powerful man in Egypt.
8. In Leviticus 19:10, the LORD tells the Israelites that after they harvest from their vineyards, they are not to go over them a second time. Why?

Answer: They should leave food for the poor and the foreigners.

According to Scripture, the Israelites were not to harvest the second time as they were to leave leftovers for the poor and the foreigners.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state: "Providing for the poor and the stranger (the alien who could not own land) was a priority in ancient Israelite society. Reserving the gleanings of harvest for the poor is a very effective way of providing food for them."
9. In the book of Acts, Ananias and Sapphira are the first husband-wife team mentioned. What are the names of the couple who comprised the second team mentioned in Acts, as per the 18th chapter?

Answer: Priscilla and Aquila

The correct answer is Priscilla and Aquila. The account of Ananias and Sapphira is found in the fifth chapter of Acts while Priscilla and Aquila make their appearance in the 18th chapter. It's interesting to note that Priscilla's name often appears before Aquila's name in Scripture. And this at a time when women were often seen as second-class citizens.

Many people suspect the fact Priscilla's name appears before her husband's is testament to her brilliance and leadership abilities.
10. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is credited with making seven "I am" statements with the first one being "I am the bread of life" as per John 6:35. What's the second "I am" statement, as per John 8:12?

Answer: I am the light of the world.

The correct answer is "I am the light of the world."

As stated in the question, Jesus is quoted as making seven different "I am" statements. They are:
1.) "I am the bread of life." -- John 6:35.
2.) "I am the light of the world." -- John 8:12.
3.) "I am the door." -- John 10:7.
4.) "I am the good shepherd." -- John 10:11.
5.) "I am the resurrection and the life." -- John 11:25.
6.) "I am the way, the truth and the life." -- John 14:6.
7.) "I am the true vine." -- John 15:1.

The seven "I am" statements are the cornerstones of Christianity. Many theologians link them back to Exodus 3:14, when God calls Himself I AM.
