Lake Placid, New York, was a very scenic venue for the Olympics. It was a small town in the northeast corner of the state, situated in the Adirondack Mountains. When the games returned in 1980, it became the first location in North America to have hosted the Olympic Games twice.

Then Governor of New York, Franklin Roosevelt officially opened the games on February 4, 1932. Later that same year he was elected to the first of his four terms as President.

The United States won a total of 12 medals at these games. They also won the most gold medals at 6, winning twice as many as their next competitor Norway with 3 gold medals. It would not be until 2010 in Vancouver that the U.S. would again have the highest medal count at a Winter Olympics.

Answer: Canada

There were only four teams competing in ice hockey at these Games. Canada took the gold medal in this competition, the U.S. won the silver, and Germany took home the bronze. The fourth country to compete was Poland. The worldwide economic depression had a major effect on these games and many countries were unable to compete for financial reasons.

Sonja Henie was one of the premier figure skaters in the early part of the 20th Century. She not only won gold medals at three Olympics, she was also a six-time European Champion and a 10-time World Champion. She went on to a successful acting career. She was considered by many to be one of the greatest female skaters to ever compete, and was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976.

The only countries that competed were Canada and the U.S. The U.S. had seven contestants and Canada had five. Even with fewer contestants, Canada took the gold and the bronze. This two-day event was run twice on a tract 25.1 miles (40.5 km). Before the event began, it had been rumored that gold medal winner Emile St. Goddard was not going to be able to compete due to lack of funding.

Poor weather had been a problem throughout these Games. The bobsled competition was not the only event affected. Snow had to be trucked in for the cross country skiing event, and there were times that athletes participating in the ski jump splashed down into large puddles.
