Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2007 season saw many Major Leaguers playing even after the age of 40. Which of the following was not one of these?

Answer: C.C. Sabathia

Sabathia was the odd man out. He was in his seventh season with the Indians in 2007 at the age of 27. Sabathia went 19-7 and won the AL Cy Young award. Wakefield was 'only' in his 15th season in 2008, playing for the Red Sox. He turned 41 and went 17-12 in the sesaon.

Hernandez retired as a Dodger after the 2007 season, going 0-2. He played 17 seasons and retired at the age of 42. Rogers entered his 19th season in 2007 with the Tigers at the age of 42. He went 3-4 in the season.
2. Major League Baseball showed a great balance between the teams from 2005-2007, as only one team in those three seasons won 100 games in a season. Which team was it?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

No team won 100 games in either 2006 or 2007. In 2005, the Cardinals went 100-62, but didn't make it past the NLCS as they lost to Houston. The White Sox skunked the Astros in the World Series.
3. The 2008 All-Star game was overshadowed by two things. One was the hitting display that Texas Ranger Josh Hamilton performed in the Home Run Derby. The second issue was that the All-Star game went 15 innings, and well into the night. There were only two home runs hit in the game. One was a seventh inning shot by Boston's J.D. Drew. Who hit the only other one?

Answer: Matt Holliday

The others retired at least five years earlier. Holliday's home run came off the Angels' Ervin Santana in the fifth inning. The American League won the game 4-3, with a sacrifice fly from the Rangers' Michael Young who scored Justin Morneau of the Twins in the 15th inning.

The American League produced 14 hits compared to the National League's 13, but the stat that reached out and grabbed most fans, was that the American League won the game although leaving nine more runners on base (LOB) than the National League.
4. Who was the American League Manager of the Year in 2007?

Answer: Eric Wedge

The others were all National League managers in 2007. Wedge was in his fifth season of managing in 2007, and took the Cleveland Indians to the AL Central Division crown. In the ALDS, they stepped over the Yankees, but lost to the Red Sox in the ALCS.

The Red Sox skunked the Rockies in the World Series, four games to none. Wedge really knew how to make it all come together for the Indians, even with having only one player with over five at-bats hit .300, and having no 20-game winners.
5. What a pitching milestone, 3000 strikeouts in a career. Which pitcher met this plateau in 2008?

Answer: John Smoltz

The others were already retired, and none reached the 3000-strikeout mark. John was in his 20th season in Major League baseball, and all with the Atlanta Braves when he topped the 3000-mark. His season high of 276 in 1996, helped him win the NL Cy Young award over Kevin Brown and Andy Benes.
6. In 2007, the Boston Red Sox skunked the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. Whose Red Sox home run in the top of the eighth inning of game four, was the eventual game and series-winning home run?

Answer: Bobby Kielty

The others were all Colorado Rockies. Kielty came in to pinch-hit for pitcher Mike Timlin in the eighth inning, and was his only at-bat of the entire series. His shot over the fence in left field was the game-winner. Mike Lowell of Boston was the series MVP.
7. In 2006, Major League Baseball saw the death of quite a few players including Steve Howe, Cory Lidle, Larry Sherry, and Kirby Puckett. Which of the following is also on this list of 2006?

Answer: Joe Niekro

The others all died in the 1980s. Joe was the younger brother of Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro. The only major category that Joe led the league in was wild pitches, and did this four times.
8. The 2007 NL MVP was not in the top 10 for home runs, batting average, or RBIs. Who was this Philadelphia Phillie?

Answer: Jimmy Rollins

Rollins of the Phillies did have a MVP season even without the home runs. He was third in hits, first in runs, second in total bases, first in triples, and fifth in
9. Baseball fans saw Ryan Braun in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform in 2008. This was his ______ season in Major League baseball.

Answer: 2nd

Ryan won the Rookie of the Year award with the Brewers in 2007. With higher than the usual statistics of a Rookie of the Year winner, Braun hit 34 home runs, had 146 hits, and batted .324 in the season. He won his rookie award over Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies, and Hunter Pence of the Astros.
10. Which team lost the most games in the 2007 season?

Answer: Tampa Bay

The others all won at least 80 games in the season and were over the .500 mark. Manager Joe Maddon was in his second season with Tampa Bay after taking over the reins from Lou Piniella for 2006. They went 66-96 in the season, their third consecutive last place finish in their division.
