Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these players was the oldest player to get a Major League hit in a game during the 20th century?

Answer: Jim O'Rourke

After retiring in 1893, Jim came back with a one-game encore in 1904. On September 22, he had one hit in four at-bats. O'Rourke was 54 and 21 days old. Minoso was 53, while being the Designated Hitter for the White Sox on September 12, 1976. Nick Altrock held the previous record. At age 52, he got a hit in 1929.
2. Who was the first National Leaguer to win a season home run crown, by hitting more than 30 home runs in 1922?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Hornsby, the only National Leaguer listed, hit 42 dingers in 1922 with the Cardinals. It was the first year in the National League, that anyone had hit over 25. Ruth hit 54 big ones in 1920 for the Yankees.
3. Who was the first National Leaguer to win 3 MVP awards?

Answer: Stan Musial

Musial's stellar years were in 1943, 1946, and 1948, for the St.Louis Cardinals. Stan was the only National League player listed.
4. There were two players voted into the Hall of Fame in 1962, in their first year of eligibilty. What other player joined Jackie Robinson on this monumental event?

Answer: Bob Feller

Feller, a Cleveland Indian, joined Robinson as an inductee on this great day. Robinson fortunately broke the color barrier in 1947. The other players listed, did not play until almost the 2000 season.
5. What pitcher won 30 games for the Dodgers, in one season during the 20th Century?

Answer: Nobody has done it

The only pitcher close was Koufax who hurled 27 wins in 1966. Ironically and unfortunately, this was his final year, as arthritis forced him to retire. Perranoski, the 2002 Dodger pitching coach, was a relief pitcher. As for Greg Pinchbeck, your guess is as good as mine.
6. Who is the first player to steal 6 bases in one game, and he did it twice in the same season?

Answer: Eddie Collins

Collins accomplished this amazing feat twice, 11 days apart with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912. The others listed, failed to steal 6 bases in an entire season.

8. What player was the first to be killed in a war?

Answer: Eddie Grant

Grant was killed in October 1918 during WWI. The last team that he played for was the New York Giants. In 1917, Hank Gowdy was the first player ever to enter military service.
9. Umpire Babe Pinelli, in his last Major League game, was most famous for which of the following?

Answer: Called Don Larsen's World Series perfect game

This was his last game as an umpire, when he called Dodger pinch-hitter Dale Mitchell out on three strikes, on October 8, 1956. This was game 5 of the 1956 World Series, which the Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 4 games to 3.
10. How many baseball commissioners died in office during the 20th century?

Answer: 2

Judge Landis was the first commissioner to die in office. Then Bart Giamatti, who initiated the lifetime baseball ban on Pete Rose, was the 2nd.
