Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 2002 New York Yankee pitcher led the team with most wins?

Answer: David Wells

The only other listed Yankee was Roger Clemens, who went 13-6 in the season. Wells led the Pinstripes with a record of 19-7 with 210 strikeouts. Wells beat out Mike Mussina by one win.
2. Only 10 players in the 20th century have won the Rookie of the Year Award AND been elected to the Hall of Fame. Which of the following did not?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Gwynn has many records in baseball history, but did not earn the Rookie of the Year Award. Entering the 2003 season, he has yet to make it into the Hall, but most are sure he will. Tony played 22 seasons, all with the San Diego Padres, led the league in batting 8 times, and was a 15 time All-Star.
3. What pitcher set a record for striking out 35 batters in a World Series?

Answer: Bob Gibson

Gibson who struck out over 30 batters two times in a Series, was the only pitcher in the 20th century to accomplish this feat, and was the only pitcher listed. Bob Gibson with the St.Louis Cardinals, struck out 31 batters in the 1964 Series in a 4 games to 3 win over the Yankees. He broke his own record in 1968, when he struck out 35 Tiger batters in a loss to Detroit in the Series.
4. What 2002 World Series Champion Angel slugger, led his team with the highest batting average for the season?

Answer: Adam Kennedy

Kennedy was the only Angel listed. In his 4th season in the Majors, Adam hit .312 to lead the club. The Angel 2nd baseman continued to show improvement as time went on.
5. In only one season in the 20th century, did more than one player share the MVP of a World Series. In this year 3 players shared the award. What year was it?

Answer: 1981

The World Series MVP Award began in 1955. The other years listed the Award did not exist. In 1981, Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero, and Steve Yeager, shared the Award for the Los Angeles Dodgers. No other time in the 20th century was the Award shared by even two players. In the Series the Dodgers defeated the Yankees 4 games to 2.

Answer: Ted Williams

The others listed did not hit 500 home runs in their career. The great Williams won the Triple Crowns in 1942 and 1947, and the MVP's in 1946 and 1949. The only Series that Williams saw was in 1946 against the St.Louis Cardinals. In the Red Sox loss, Williams only hit .200.

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

No other team existed in 1960. The Pirates won this World Series with a big note in history. It was the first World Series won in the bottom of the 9th inning in game 7. Bill Mazeroski, the Pirates' 2nd baseman did the deed by smacking the game winning home run. Pittsburgh beat the Yankees 4 games to 3. Although Mazeroski won the Series with his hit for the Pirates, the losing Yankees' Bobby Richardson was the Series MVP.
8. Before being named the Padres, the San Diego franchise was called what?

Answer: Their initial name was the Padres.

Answer: Fred McGriff

The other names listed never existed in Major League baseball. McGriff entered his 18 season in 2003 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was his 6th team in the Majors.
