Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An "Upset" is called an upset because of the horse "Upset" who stunned the field on August 13, 1919, and gave this horse his only career loss. Who's the horse?

Answer: Man O' War

Man O' War finished his career with a 20-1 record. He was able to capture both the Belmont and the Preakness Stakes in 1920, but was never able to capture the crown jewel, the Kentucky Derby. The legendary horse died in 1947.
2. In 2007, the University of Michigan Wolverines were ranked #5 in US college football. Then this school came in and beat them to become the first Division I-AA team to beat a Division I-A team ever, and was able to seal it with a blocked field goal in the final seconds. What school, nicknamed the Mountaineers, was it?

Answer: Appalachian State

Wide receiver Dexter Jackson scored two touchdowns on the day and the Mountaineers, and quarterback Armanti Edwards threw for 227 yards in the win. 109,000 people crammed into Wolverine Stadium to see the "Miracle in Michigan". The final was 34-32.
3. With a awful debut in 1962, this Major League Baseball team stunned the world by making their first winning season, a World Series winning season in 1969. What team is this?

Answer: New York Mets

The Mets debuted in 1962, and won only 40 games to go with 120 losses. A couple of years after that disaster, the Mets picked up future Hall of Fame pitcher named Tom Seaver in a lottery. With the help of him, the 'Miracle Mets' won the 1969 World Series over the Baltimore Orioles.
4. The 1980 'Miracle on Ice' featured what country, not known for their hockey talent and hosting the Olympics, shocked the world by winning the gold?

Answer: United States

The 1980 Miracle on Ice was sealed with a semi-final shock of the heavily-favored Soviets. Mike Eruzione was the captain and scored the game-winning goal against Russia. Because the medal round was a round robin, the U.S. still needed to beat the Finnish, and did just that.

At the end of the Soviet game, American broadcaster Al Michaels, now infamously yelled, "Do you believe in Miracles?"
5. Boxer Buster Douglas did the unthinkable on February 11, 1990. He knocked out which legendary boxer?

Answer: Mike Tyson

The legendary fight went down at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. Douglas was just coming off a loss to Holyfield, and was a newbie to the worldwide stage. Douglas finished his career 38-6, including the 10-round knockout win in Japan, Tyson's first pro loss.
6. In the 1988 FA Cup, this small team, from a city known for a sport other than soccer, stunned the heavily-favored Liverpool taking home the trophy. What later defunct team was this?

Answer: Wimbledon

Wimbledon FC stunned the world that day, winning by a 1-0 final. The lone goal came from Lawrie Sanchez in the 37th minute. The Wimbledon win was only one of three FA Cup wins by a team other than Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, or Liverpool in the next 20 years.

The team moved in 2004 and became the Milton Keynes Dons, leaving Wimbledon with only a major tennis championship to have as their own.
7. In June 18, 2005, what country not really known for its cricket team, shocked the world champion Australia, and had many people claim that this was the biggest upset in the history of One-Day cricket?

Answer: Bangladesh

The shocker was played at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff, Wales, as part of a three team tournament with England. Bangladesh won by 5 wickets. Just a week later, the Aussies got their revenge, beating Bangladesh by 10 wickets at Old Trafford in Manchester.
8. College basketball's March Madness has always had its share of upsets. The 2011 tournament saw an 11-seed make it to the Final Four. Which school from Richmond, Virginia was it?

Answer: Virginia Commonwealth (VCU)

The VCU Rams, led by energetic coach Shaka Smart, were criticized for even being selected to the tournament, finishing 4th in a non-powerhouse conference. But they hushed all the critics, beating fellow #11 Southern Cal, #6 Georgetown, #3 Purdue, #10 Florida State, and #1 Kansas. All those games were upset victories. Fellow surprise Butler, an 8-seed, knocked them out though in the National semi-final.
9. In 2001, Goran Ivanisevic won this tournament as a wildcard, becoming the first player ever to do it. What tournament was it?

Answer: Wimbledon

Patrick Rafter was Ivansevic's final victim in the 2001 final, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, and 9-7 in the final. Andy Roddick and Greg Rusedski also lost to Ivanesavic. Rusedski lost in straight sets. It was Goran's fourth Wimbledon final and his third in four years, but the first and only time he would taste victory. The Croatian star never won any other major.
10. Rulon Gardner defeated Alexander Karelin stunningly in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Olympics. How is that an upset? Probably because Gardner had no team. Karelin hadn't lost on the international stage in 10 years, and lost to someone who hadn't won on the big stage. When did this upset happen?

Answer: Sydney in 2000

The Wyoming native weighed in overweight after the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and joined "The Biggest Loser" where he lost many pounds. In his shocking upset, Karelin surrendered his first point in six years to Gardner, and never appeared in an Olympic Games again, winning three gold medals, and that one silver.
