Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The largest margin of victory in NFL history resulted in a 1973 game when the San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Jets, 75-1. What makes it obvious that this statement is false?

Answer: It is impossible to score a total of 1 point in a game

There is no such thing in football to have a total of 1 point at any time in a game. The only time a team can score just 1 point on a play is when a team opts to kick a field goal for their PAT, and that means a touchdown had to have already been scored.

The least amount of points a team can score in a game, given that they were not shut out, is 2, which can result from a safety or when a team turns over the ball attempting the PAT and the other team runs it back to the other end zone. No mercy rule of any kind exists in the NFL, the 49ers have been around since 1946, and inter-conference play was indeed a thing back then.
2. The Pirates' walk off win against the Phillies was their 4th of the regular season, as they won by a final score of 10-5. What is wrong with this scenario?

Answer: The maximum amount of runs you can win by on a walk off is 4

When a team walks off in baseball, that means that, as the home team, the action of taking the lead in the bottom of the 9th or extra innings ends the game immediately. So, before the play that ended the game, the score must have either been tied or the home team had been trailing.

The most amount of runs a team can score on one play is 4 (on a grand slam), and thus the maximum amount of runs a team can win by on a walk off is 4, which means a grand slam was hit during a tied game. No other configurations are possible.

The Pirates and Phillies are allowed 6 or 7 games in each regular season, there is no limit on how many times you can achieve a walk off win in the regular season, and all teams can win by means of a walk off.
3. The 1986 NBA Finals was won by the Golden State Warriors, who defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. What makes it obvious that this statement is false?

Answer: The Warriors and Lakers cannot play in the Finals against each other

Golden State and Los Angeles are both Western Conference teams, making it impossible to play each other in the NBA Finals. It is a championship round, and thus the two teams playing must be in opposite conferences. The NBA did not cancel the Finals in 1986, in fact it was won by the Boston Celtics, and the Warriors' first championship came in 1947. That year, the Lakers were definitely a Los Angeles team.
4. The Jacksonville Jaguars ended the season with a 6-12 record and missed the playoffs. What is wrong about this scenario?

Answer: Each NFL team can only play 17 games in the regular season

Ending the season with a 6-12 record can only be possible if playoff games are counted towards it, but in this scenario, the playoffs were missed. Thus, a 6-12 record is impossible because 6 wins and 12 losses adds up to 18 total games played. All NFL teams can only play 17 games in the regular season.

There is no set benchmark for how many wins you need to get in the playoffs, the criteria to make the postseason is all decided by seeding relative to the performances of other teams. No, the Jaguars do not play in Toronto, the fact that they play in Jacksonville is consistent with the scenario, and losing more than 10 times is possible, and actually guaranteed if you only win 6 or fewer games.
5. Juan Marichal's statline in his perfect game in 1965 was 8 strikeouts, 9 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 102 pitches, and 29 batters faced. What makes it obvious that this statement is false?

Answer: He could only have faced 27 batters

In order for a single pitcher to pitch a perfect game, all faced batters had to have made an out. With 3 outs making an inning, this means that during or at the conclusion of a perfect game, the number of batters faced is 3 times the number of innings pitched. For a perfect game to have been achieved after 9 innings, only 27 batters were faced.

In 1965, there was a perfect game thrown. The number of strikeouts is irrelevant to whether it is a no-hitter or perfect game, and Juan Marichal having been a baseball pitcher is no lie.
6. LeBron James scores 44 points, shooting 18/23 on field goals, 2/4 on 3-point shots, and 9/13 on free throws, and the Cavaliers win 106-80. What is wrong about this scenario?

Answer: His shooting statistics are not consistent with the amount of points he scored

For LeBron to have made 18 field goals, 2 3-point shots, and 9 free throws, he would have had a total of 47 points. The formula for converting field goals made, 3-pointers made, and free throws made to points is ((FGM-3PM)*2) + (3PM*3) + FTM = PTS. When plugged in, it becomes ((18-2)*2) + (2*3) + 9. Which comes out to 32 + 6 + 9, which is 47.

The shown shooting statistics cannot coincide with a total of 44 points. There is no such thing as the first to scoring 100 points wins, nor does a ball-hogging rule exist. LeBron has scored more than 40 points multiple times, so he does not have to worry about sitting out once he gets to that benchmark.
7. Dan Marino threw for a career-high 6 touchdown passes in Week 13 of a 1988 game, but his Dolphins lost the game 38-34. What makes it obvious that this statement is false?

Answer: The amount of passing touchdowns he threw is too high to be true

If Dan Marino had thrown 6 touchdowns in any game period, the least the Dolphins could have scored was 36, and that's if all of their PAT's were failures. Therefore, their final score of 34 negates this fact. Marino was fully healthy that year, byes were nonexistent in 1988, and no, the Dolphins did not have an undefeated season in 1988. They were 6-10 after the season ended.
8. An Astros player hits a 408-foot home run over the wall in dead center field in the bottom of the second inning off of a Mariners pitcher. What is wrong about this scenario?

Answer: A home run could not have resulted with all aspects considered

The key information here is the time in which this "home run" happened. If it was the bottom of the second inning, that means the home team was batting, and so an Astros player hitting the home run means they were hosting the Mariners at Minute Maid Park.

The dimensions of Minute Maid Park are not consistent with the length, in feet, that this ball traveled and area of the park to which it was hit. At Minute Maid Park, the wall in dead (straightaway) center field is 436 feet, so a home run could not have been hit, eliminating the choice saying that home runs are always shorter than 408 feet. Both teams bat in all innings, and the Astros and Mariners do play in the same league, and are actually designated to play 19 times a season.
9. In 2006, the Oklahoma City Thunder finished with the best record in the West at 58-24. What makes it obvious that this statement is false?

Answer: They were the SuperSonics in 2006

It's plain and simple: the Oklahoma City Thunder were not a franchise in 2006. Back then, their name was the Seattle SuperSonics. The amount of wins a team has is irrelevant to their seed, Oklahoma City does not play in the Eastern Conference, and their place finishes in their franchise history does include a 1st seed, which was in 2012-2013.
10. The Blues and Bruins square off in the Stanley Cup Finals, and the Bruins win 4-0, winning the championship in St. Louis. What is wrong with this scenario?

Answer: Nothing. This is perfectly plausible.

All aspects of this hypothetical scenario are consistent. Game 4 would not necessarily be in Boston, as it never specified who had the home advantage. The Bruins have won the Stanley Cup, and it doesn't matter because this is a hypothetical scenario, similar to the Blues having never been to the Conference Championship series.

Not only is that false, but hypothetical scenarios do not take into consideration what happens in real life, because those things are subject to change.
