Answer: Joe Jackson

None of the others listed were born yet. The scandal was about the 1919 World Series, pitting the Chicago White Sox against the Cincinnati Reds, in a betting/throwing the World Series ordeal. It was unfortunate, and also due to Jackson being one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball.

In 13 seasons prior to his banishment from baseball, he led a major category for batting 8 seasons in his career, and 'retired' with a .356 average.
2. Which pitching great was the first to win 6 Cy Young Awards?

Answer: Roger Clemens

Strange but true, Ryan never won a Cy Young in his great career. He placed 2nd to Jim Palmer of the Orioles in 1972. Newcombe was the first recepient of the Cy Young in 1956, and Koufax was the first to win 3 Cy Young Awards. Clemens won 3 with the Red Sox (1986, 1987, 1991), two with Toronto in 1997 and 1998, and another with the Yankees in 2001.
3. At which position did Babe Ruth begin his Major League career?

Answer: Pitcher

On July 11, 1914, the world saw what was to be the beginning of a landmark. Ruth, a Boston Red Sox newbie, pitched his first season to a 2-1 record. It wasn't until 1920 with the Yankees, that Ruth became a full-time hitter, and only pitched in one game that season.

He batted .376 with 54 home runs. From 1920 to the end of his career in 1935, Ruth only appeared in 5 games as a pitcher. His career record was 94-46.
4. Which of the following teams never went to the World Series in the 1990s?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers never went to the promised land in the '90s. The Braves lead the list with 5 appearances, the Yankees with 3, and the Indians twice.
5. Who was the first player in history to hit two inside-the-park home runs in a single game, accomplished in 1972?

Answer: Dick Allen

The others retired long before. Allen, with the Chicago White Sox on July 31, 1972, had the speed to pull this feat off against the Twins of Minnesota. Oddly enough, the second player to do this was Greg Gagne in 1986. As a Twin, he pulled this off against the White Sox.
6. How many times throughout the immortal career of Babe Ruth, did he hit more than 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: 4

The first season with the Yankees in 1920, saw the Babe smack a terrifying 54 home runs. No other player had ever hit 30 in a season. His encore in 1921, Ruth hit 59 round-trippers. One of the greatest teams in history, the 1927 Yankees, saw Ruth hit 60, followed by another 54 in 1928. He retired with the infamous number of 714.
7. Which team won the first National League crown in 1876?

Answer: Chicago White Stockings

The other team names listed never existed in professional baseball. Of the 8 teams in the league's first season, the White Stockings went 52-14. They were lead by 2nd baseman Ross Barnes who batted .429, and pitcher Al Spalding who threw a 47-12 season. 3rd baseman Cap Anson finished 3rd in home runs that season by hitting only two.

The White Stockings finished 6 games ahead of the St.Louis Brown Stockings.
8. Which pitcher was suspended from baseball in the 1970 season for gambling?

Answer: Denny McLain

The others listed had retired long before 1970. In 1968, McLain blistered the American League with the Tigers by going 31-6 for the season. He went 24-9 the following season, earning him two consecutive Cy Young Awards. For his drug problems and gambling, he was suspended for much of the 1970 season.

In 1971, he was a dismal 10-22 with Washington. He retired in 1972 after more legal problems.
9. What do the names of Bill McGowan, Al Barlick, Cal Hubbard, and Nestor Chylak, have in common?

Answer: They were umpires inducted into the Hall of Fame

The first two umpires inducted into the Hall were Tom Connolly and Bill Klem in 1953. Other umpires inducted include Billy Evans and Jocko Conlin.

Answer: Willie Keeler

Keeler played his ball from 1892-1910 with numerous teams over 19 seasons, retiring as a New York Giant. In 1897, he batted .424 with the Baltimore Orioles, also setting a record for hitting safely in 44 consecutive games. He weighed every bit of only 140 lbs.
