Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the first round of the 1998 F1 World Championship, who was reigning World Champion?

Answer: Jacques Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve won the 1997 F1 World Championship. It was an exciting finish to the end of the season with Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher going to Jerez needing a win to secure the title. Schumacher was leading for most of the race with Villeneuve behind him, then Jacques tried a passing move down the inside and Schumacher tried to ram him off the track, but his plan back-fired and it was Schumacher who ended up in the gravel, giving Villeneuve the title.
2. Who won the first round of the 1998 F1 season in Melbourne, Australia?

Answer: Mika Hakkinen

Finn Mika Hakkinen won the 1998 Australian GP after being handed the lead by team mate David Coulthard. They had made a deal before the race that who ever made it to the first corner on the first lap first would win the race. Hakkinen was on pole and Coulthard 2nd and Hakkinen got to the first corner first.

He was on course for his 2nd GP win until a problem with his radio caused him to pit an extra time and Coulthard was leading but keeping with their agreement he moved over and let Hakkinen win.
3. Which Formula One race was the third round of the 1998 World Championship?

Answer: Argentine GP

The Argentine GP in Buenos Aires was Round 3 of the 1998 World Championship. Michael Schumacher won the race, Mika Hakkinen looked like he was going to win the race but he was held up by Heinz Harald Frentzen when he was trying to lap him, losing 10 seconds in one lap.
4. David Coulthard won one race in the 1998 season, which race?

Answer: San Marino GP

Coulthard, who has had a good record at Imola, took pole position and led from start to finish to win his only GP of the 1998 season.
5. Who won the 1998 Spanish GP?

Answer: Mika Hakkinen

Mika Hakkinen took pole position and led from start to finish.
6. Who did Mika Salo and Pedro Diniz drive for in the 1998 season?

Answer: Arrows

Arrows' best result of 1998 season was at Monaco where Salo finished 4th and Diniz finished 6th.
7. Michael Schumacher won the 1998 Hungarian GP, how many pit stops did he make?

Answer: 3

Schumacher was in 2nd place behind Hakkinen and wasn't going to win the race on two stops so his Ferrari team changed his strategy to three stops and took on less fuel in his second pit stop. This meant he could pull out a gap to Hakkinen, make his third stop and come out still in the lead.
8. Who caused the multi-car pile up at the start of the 1998 Belgian GP?

Answer: David Coulthard

In wet conditions on the run down to Eau Rouge on the first lap, Coulthard spun in front of the field causing a huge pile up. The race didn't restart for another hour.
9. Which team picked up their first GP win at Spa in 1998?

Answer: Jordan

Jordan just didn't take their first win, it was a 1-2. Damon Hill was 1st and Ralf Schumacher was 2nd in a weird race which saw Jean Alesi also on the podium for Sauber.
10. In the final race of the 1998 season, Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher went into the final race at Suzuka, with Japan needing a win to take the Drivers Championship but it didn't go Schumacher's way, what happened to him at the start?

Answer: He stalled on the grid

Schumacher stalled his Ferrari on the grid which meant he had to start the race at the back of the grid. He made his way up to 4th place in the race but he retired with a puncture after running through debris.
