Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the first NASCAR race of the year called?

Answer: The Daytona 500

In February, every year, The Daytona 500 opens the NASCAR season. Considered by many to be the home of NASCAR, Daytona Beach was being used for racing cars as far back as 1903. The level, hard-packed sand proved to be perfect for auto racing. The first Daytona 500 took place in 1959 at the Daytona International Speedway, where it was still being run over 50 years later.
2. Richard Petty was the first driver in NASCAR history to win 20 races in one season.

Answer: True

Considered by most to be one of the greatest NASCAR drivers ever, Richard Petty won an amazing 27 races in 1967 and 21 races in 1971. Fifty years later his record still stood, and no other driver had managed to win 20+ races in a year. In his 35 year career, he raced in an amazing 1,184 NASCAR races and in 1992, President George Bush honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, making him the first athlete in motorsports to be honored in this fashion.
3. The checkered flag indicates that the winning driver has crossed the finish line is not the only flag used in NASCAR. What does a plain white flag signify?

Answer: Final lap

In NASCAR, a white flag indicates the start of the last lap of the race. The yellow flag is a warning flag indicating hazardous conditions. This can be caused by a wreck or debris on the track. A black flag sends all vehicles to pit row and a red flag indicates to stop immediately or that the race is being cancelled due to hazardous conditions.

There are a total of eight different flags used in NASCAR with the white flag the only one that is only shown once. The exact origins of the flags is a matter of scholarly debate and their use differs in different forms of racing.

This is about the flags used in NASCAR only.
4. In 1949, which one of these women became the first female to drive in a NASCAR event?

Answer: Sara Christian

While very few women participate in NASCAR, in the early days of stock car racing it was not uncommon for women to take part. On June 19,1949, at the NASCAR Strictly Stock inaugural race, held at Charlotte Speedway Sara Christian became the first female to qualify and compete in a NASCAR race.

She finished in 13th position out of a field of 33 drivers. C'mon ladies of the world, we know we are better drivers...wouldn't that make us better race car drivers also?
5. Which one of these NASCAR race tracks are not oval in shape?

Answer: Watkins Glen International

While the vast majority of NASCAR races are held on oval-shaped tracks, not all of them are. Found just south of Lake Seneca in New York State, lies one of the more unique racetracks in the NASCAR Sprint series of races. Certainly not oval in shape, this track requires agility and steering skill. Because of its irregular twists and turns it is one of the slowest tracks in NASCAR.

It is not uncommon to see two wheels off the ground by a few inches while turning on this race track.
6. While all NASCAR races come with monetary awards, some earn the winner a variety of different smaller prizes. Which of the following things is won by the winner of the race at Martinsville?

Answer: Grandfather clock

In 1947, H. Clay Earles helped the build and design the Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia. He decided that he wanted to add a prize that would really stand out from awards offered at other tracks. He made a gentlemen's agreement with the local Ridgeway clock company, who began providing a clock for the winner of the race.

In 1964 Fred Lorenzen won the first Martinsville Ridgeway grandfather clock. Since that time these hand-made clocks have become one of the most coveted awards in NASCAR.
7. NASCAR driver, Mark Martin, near the end of his career, was sponsored by which of the following?

Answer: Viagra

Martin's car was prominently displayed with the word Viagra for many races near the end of his long career. At one time NASCAR sponsors were mainly related to tobacco, alcohol, and autos. These sponsors provided financial support for the sport, while receiving advertising time with race fans. With the first two industries now being banned from sponsorship, there are many new companies that have started sponsoring drivers and vehicles in NASCAR. Cars display candy logos, energy drink logos and store logos, just to name a few.

As for the other three options, any one of them could show up on the hood of NASCAR automobile in the future.
8. At the New Hampshire raceway the winning driver wins a live lobster as a trophy.

Answer: True

There are many cool trophies in NASCAR, no doubt about it. One of the most unusual of them has got to be the rock lobster that is awarded to the winner at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. How this works is that the driver stands and holds the giant lobster while posing for photos. Next a the lobster is pressure cooked by a local company who flash freezes the meat, packages it and sends it to the winning teams race shop. Each lobster produces about six pounds of meat.

As fearless as these drivers appear on the track, there are many funny photos of them looking scared while holding the lobster aloft during the photo shoot.
9. What exactly is a 'Polish victory lap'?

Answer: A victory lap driven in the opposite direction around the track.

The Polish victory lap came about in 1988, when NASCAR driver Alan Kulwiki did it while celebrating his first career win at the Checker 500 in Phoenix, Arizona. The fad caught on and is now commonly seen in dirt track and short track races. A winning driver will take the checkered flag from the flag stand.

He then proceeds to do a U-turn and drives clockwise (backwards) around the track. While doing this, he will wave the flag out of his window, which is now facing the fans.
10. Which NASCAR racer, with good reason, was nicknamed "The Intimidator"?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt Sr

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was one of the great NASCAR drivers of the modern era. The world of NASCAR was rocked when he was killed in a 2001 accident at the Daytona Speedway. Sadly, he was at the prime of his career and his aggressive style of driving had earned him numerous championships, seventy-six wins, and a variety of other records.

His death, in large part, helped force NASCAR to enforce new safety rules and equipment that will, undoubtedly save numerous more lives. A decade after his death, fans would stand at the beginning of the Daytona 500 race holding up three fingers in his honor. Three was the number on his car.
