Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kevin had the honor of being named Mr. Basketball twice in high school. In which two states did he receive the award?

Answer: South Carolina and Illinois

He was named Mr. Basketball during his junior year at Mauldin High School in South Carolina. After being arrested for his involvement for a racially-motivated incident, Kevin decided that he had to leave Mauldin and finish his high school career at Farragut Academy in Illinois.

His average of 25.2 points per game, 17.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 6.5 blocks in his senior year at Farragut, earned him another Mr. Basketball title.
2. What was the main reason that Kevin decided to skip college and go directly to the NBA?

Answer: He failed to gain an acceptable ACT score

He took his ACTs four times, and each time he failed to earn a score that would make him eligible to play as a college freshman. He was selected with the fifth pick in the 1995 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming the first high school player to enter the draft since Moses Malone in 1974.
3. After being drafted, Kevin began his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team was in the midst of a "transition" period, which was made evident by many personnel changes and trades, including the replacing of the team's coach. Who was Kevin's first coach in Minnesota?

Answer: Bill Blair

Bill Blair coached the Timberwolves for the entire 1994-95 season. After coaching only 20 games in the 1995-96 season, he resigned, and Philip "Flip" Saunders was named the head coach on December 18.
4. What honor was bestowed on Kevin following his rookie season?

Answer: All-Rookie Second Team

He averaged 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game during his rookie season, which qualified him for the All-Rookie Second Team.
5. In what year did Kevin make his first All-Star game appearance?

Answer: 1997

Shaquille O'Neal was originally supposed to play in the 1997 All-Star game, but he was injured the week prior. Being that he was the third-highest vote-getter among forwards, Kevin was selected to replace him.
6. In what year was Kevin named MVP of the All-Star game?

Answer: 2003

The 2003 All-Star game was held in Atlanta, Georgia at the Philips Arena. Kevin managed 37 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
7. Why did Kevin decline to participate in the 2004 Athens Olympics?

Answer: He was getting married

Despite winning the gold medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Kevin declined to participate in the Athens Olympic. Instead, he spent the summer at his house in Malibu. While he was there, he and girlfriend Brandi Padilla celebrated their union with a private wedding ceremony.

His marriage to Brandi made him the brother-in-law of Minneapolis-born music producer Jimmy Jam Harris, a long-time Timberwolves' season ticket holder.
8. In 2004, Kevin led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals, where they met a devastating defeat. Which team crushed their hopes of winning a championship?

Answer: Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers, led by the dynamic duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, won the six-game series 4-2. The Lakers went on to lose to the Detroit Pistons in the finals. The 2003-04 season concluded with Kevin being named league MVP, however.
9. In 2006, Kevin was given special recognition by the NBA for his contributions to the Minneapolis community as well as his donation of money to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. What was the name of this award?

Answer: The J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award

This award is given annually to the player, coach, or trainer who exhibits "outstanding service and dedication to the community". It is the oldest citizenship award in the NBA and, since its beginnings in 1974, it has been awarded to 35 players. Other notable winners include Julius Erving, Isiah Thomas, Doc Rivers, Dikembe Mutombo, and Reggie Miller.
10. On July 31, 2007, Kevin was officially traded to the Boston Celtics. Minnesota received five players in exchange for his talent. Which of the following was not one of those players?

Answer: Antoine Walker

This was the second major trade between Minnesota and Boston in as many seasons. In exchange for Kevin, the Timberwolves received Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green (traded to Houston), Theo Ratliff (traded to Detroit), cash consideration, and a couple first-round draft picks. Following this trade, the Timberwolves traded former Celtics Ricky Davis and Mark Blount (acquired in the 2006 trade for Wally Szczerbiak) to the Miami Heat, in exchange for Antoine Walker and Michael Doleac.
