Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the Australian Football League (AFL) formerly known as?

Answer: It was entirely new and did not replace another name

Whilst the majority of the sides were originally part of the VFL when the competition became Australia wide, it was decided that the term VFL was no longer applicable, and therefore the new title was bestowed upon the competition.
2. In the physically active game of squash, what must a player ask the scorer for if the opposing player impedes or obstructs them from a fair shot?

Answer: Let

The scorer has the right to either deny the request if they feel that the player was not impeded, can ask for the point to be replayed, or can award a point to the player asking for the let if they served, or demand a "hand out".
3. In field hockey, what is a "bully"?

Answer: A neutral way of commencing or recommencing the game

A "bully" consisted of a player from each side standing square on to each other with the ball placed on the ground in-between them. By raising and tapping each others sticks 3 times ( bully1 ,bully2, bully3) whilst keeping their sticks as close to the ball as possible, the player with the fastest reactions get control of the ball.
4. The "Duckworth-Lewis method" is a format used in cricket, for limited overs matches, to calculate which side wins when the game has been shortened because of rain or other reason. What are the names of these two founders of this method?

Answer: Frank Duckworth & Tony Lewis

For those not familiar with this system, this is a basic example. Side 1 bats first, scores 200 runs in 50 overs, therefore its run rate is 4 runs per over. (50*4=200). Side 2 comes to the crease, and it rains for 40 minutes after they have started their innings.

The rain has meant that side 2 only has time to face 40 overs instead of the 50. Using the Duckworth-Lewis method, side 2 has to score 160 runs (40 overs @ 4 runs per over) to equal the game, and 161 runs to win the game.
5. In rugby league, today's scrums consist of 6 players per side. Years ago, there was another type of scrum that only involved one player from each team. Can you remember what it was called?

Answer: Chicken scratch

The two players had to face each other, rest each others heads together, have their hands behind their backs, and then the referee put the football in-between them at their feet. They had to strike the ball backwards to one of their waiting teammates. This looked like two chickens in a paddock, scratching around for food.
6. Used in most grand slams and major tennis tournaments across the world, what is the name of the electronic device used for close line calls?

Answer: Cyclops

Named after the Greek mythological race of one-eyed giants, Cyclops was designed to counter the great speed that new racquets allow the game of tennis to be played today. Cyclops averages over 85% correct rate.
7. As most countries use the metric system, it's pretty common knowledge that the Olympic running marathon is run over a distance of 42,195 metres. (42.195 km ). Can you remember what the equivalent distance is in the old imperial system?

Answer: 26 miles 385 yards

The term comes from a plain NE of Athens where, following the defeat of the Persians in 490 BC, a runner took the news to Athens, some 40 kilometres away.
8. Many high profile sports throughout the world have more people wanting to watch the game than their grounds can handle. What is one of the answers that some sports are using?

Answer: Placing massive live video screens outside of the grounds

For the fans who missed out on getting tickets to the big game, many sports venues are showing coverage of the game on massive screens set up outside of the grounds, as a away of appeasing the dedicated fans who missed out on getting tickets to the game.
9. Because of continual dying numbers of both fans as well as players, which former "amateur" football game was the most recent to become "professional" as far as paying its players?

Answer: Rugby Union

Players of Rugby Union were exiting the code because of its amateur status to join similar codes of football, where the top ranking players received huge salaries for their talent.
10. A majority of professional golfers have introduced a new club into their bag. What is the name of that club?

Answer: Utility

The utility club is generally an iron tipped club that is weighted to drive/pitch the ball to a distance that is somewhere between the smallest iron and the largest wedge.
