Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lists regarding the top sports upsets fill the Internet. One upset that appears on nearly every single American-made list (usually at or near the top) is the moment that "Sports Illustrated" called the Top Sports Moment of the 20th Century. In which sport did the United States shock both its opponents from the Soviet Union and the world in winning the gold medal?

Answer: Ice Hockey

The final moments of the 1980 medal-round hockey game between the USA and the USSR at Lake Placid NY featured long time announcer Al Michaels coining the phrase that still defines the 1980 US Hockey Team: "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" The USA still had to defeat Finland in its next game to win the gold medal and did so, winning 4-2 after trailing 2-1 (the final-round was a round-robin between four teams - USA, USSR, Sweden and Finland).
From 1956 to 1988 the USSR won the ice hockey gold medal at every Olympics (except 1960 and 1980), and from 1954 to 1990 the USSR were world champions at 20 of the 30 world championships!
(The ten they missed were 1955, 1957 1960, 1961, 1962, 1972, 1976, 197, 1985 and 1987)
2. In the late 1980s, no boxer was as sure of a bet as Mike Tyson. Tyson, however, was upset by a 42-to-1 longshot in Tokyo on February 11, 1990. Who upset the previously undefeated Tyson to shock the boxing world?

Answer: Buster Douglas

It was Tyson's first professional loss (he went into the fight with a 37-0 record). Buster Douglas held the world heavyweight boxing championship for a little over eight months, losing the title to Evander Holyfield in October of 1990. Tyson ended up in prison for three years after being convicted of raping Miss Black Rhode Island, Desiree Washington (his sentence was six years). Tyson returned to the ring in 1995 and retired in 2005.
3. This horse won 20 of its 21 races, and it lost the 21st race by a half-length to a horse whose name created this quiz -- Upset. While he has never had a movie about him, he was named the top thoroughbred champion of the Twentieth Century by "Blood-Horse" magazine. Who was this horse-racing legend?

Answer: Man O' War

Man O' War won 10 of 11 starts as a two-year old (in 1919), and all 10 starts as a three-year old (in 1920) before retiring to stud. Man O' War sired War Admiral, which won the Triple Crown in 1937. Man O' War's offspring Hard Tack sired Seabiscuit. He is interred at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington, Kentucky.
4. Rulon Gardner, of the USA, shocked the Greco-Roman wrestling world and sports world by winning the gold medal at the 130 kilogram weight class at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. This was a shock because he defeated a 33 year old Russian wrestler who had won the previous three gold medals (in 1988, 1992, and 1996), had not lost in 13 years, and had not even had a point scored on him for 6 years. Who was this amazing Russian?

Answer: Aleksandr Karelin

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Karelin (aks "The Siberian Bear") is considered by nearly everyone as the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time. His loss at the Sydney Olympics (the score was 1-0) to Gardner led to his retirement from sport and the beginning of a new career in politics.

He went on to serve in the Russian Duma (parliament) as the representative for both the Novosibirsk Oblast and the Stavropol Krai.
5. The 1950 World Cup took place in Brazil and saw one of the sport's greatest upsets in the group stages. The game in question finished 1-0, and the goal scorer was Joe Gaetjens. A movie about this game starred singer Gavin Rossdale as one of the losing team members. Which country won the game and which country lost?

Answer: USA beat England

In their first group match England had beaten Chile 1-0 and the USA were beaten 3-1 by Spain. USA vs. England was the second group match for both teams. Joe Gaetjens scored the winner in the 38th minute. Neither team progressed to the medal round as Spain won their group with three wins from their three matches. The other group winners were Brazil, Uruguay and Sweden. The four teams played another round-robin, with Uruguay beat Brazil in the final game of the to finish top and collect the gold medal.
On December 9, 2009 the New York Times wrote: "The English invented soccer and were 3-1 favorites to win the tournament. The Americans were 500-1 long shots. "A band of no-hopers," The Belfast Telegraph called them ... So shocking and unimaginable was the outcome, it is considered the equivalent of the Americans losing to the British in baseball."
The movie about the USA vs. England game was first called "The Game of Their Lives", but when it was released on DVD it was renamed as "The Miracle Match" (2005). The film is filled with inaccuracies and generally has received negative reviews.
6. The classic Hollywood showdown between David and Goliath played out in Indiana and in the movie "Hoosiers" (1986). The movie was based on real life, of course, and portrayed the 1954 Indiana high school basketball championship. Which real high school won that state championship and became immortalized in "Hoosiers"?

Answer: Milan High School

Milan High School beat Muncie Central High School 32-30 in the 1954 finals. Hickory High School was the fictitious high school in "Hoosiers" (Hinkle High School is in Colorado). Both the real 1954 final and the movie finale took place at Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Indiana finally divided larger schools from smaller schools for the basketball championships in 1997.
7. In 1955, the world's best golfer was Ben Hogan, and he was trying to win his fifth U.S. Open title. He was almost successful, ending up tied for the lead after 72 holes with the man who would upset him in an 18-hole playoff. Oddly, the man who beat Hogan won three tournaments in his career -- all of them by winning playoffs! Who was this upset winner who shot 69 in the playoff to Hogan's 72?

Answer: Jack Fleck

Jack Fleck was born on November 7, 1921, in Bettendorf, Iowa. His U.S. Open win took place at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and he had to come back from being an incredible nine shots behind the leader after the FIRST round!
8. In 2007, football at the University of Michigan was riding high. Lloyd Carr was in his final season as the Wolverines coach, and his team was ranked #5 in the country to start the year. Michigan started its season with a "gimme" game against a Football Championship Series team -- or so Michigan thought the game was a gimme. What FCS team defeated Michigan 34-32 thanks to a last second blocked field goal at Michigan Stadium?

Answer: Appalachian State

At the time, the Appalachian State Mountaineers were the two-time defending champions of the FCS. They were on a 14-game winning streak as well -- at the time the longest active winning streak in all of Division 1 football. Appalachian State had gone ahead 34-32 with just 27 seconds on the clock after a 69-yard drive stalled inside Michigan's 15 yard line. Even the august New York Times called it "one of the biggest upsets in college football history".
9. One of the biggest upsets in English football (soccer) history occurred in the FA Cup in 1989. A non-league team team playing in the Football Conference defeated Coventry City, a team in the top division of English Football (then the First Division). The final score was 2-1. The team featured luminaries such as midfielder David Speedie, forward Cyrille Regis, and goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic. Coventry City were promoted to the First Division in 1967 (their first ever appearance in the top flight of English football), and were a foundation member of the FA Premier League when the First Division left the Football League.
10. Rafael Nadal has won six French Open titles, and won 31 consecutive matches at the French Open beginning with his first appearance at Roland Garros in 2005. That all changed in the fourth round of the 2009 French Open. Nadal was defeated by a Swedish player who ended up losing to Roger Federer in the finals in 2009. Can you name that Swede?

Answer: Robin Soderling

Soderling was born in Tibro, Sweden in 1984. A year later Soderling beat Federer in the 2010 French Open only to lose to Nadal in the Finals. Soderling was the first Swede since Magnus Norman in 2000 to reach the French Open finals.
