Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following has never been the name of the Senators' 2006 home arena?

Answer: Civic Centre

The Senators have played in all of these buildings, but their 2006 location in Kanata has had 3 names since its NHL debut in January 1996. Originally called the Palladium, a multi-million dollar agreement was quickly reached with Ottawa-based software company Corel, and the name changed (Corel Centre) in February 1996.

It remained as such for nearly 10 years, until a new contract was drawn up with Scotiabank, and the building re-named once more (Scotiabank Place) in January 2006.
2. What was the result of the Senators first game, played on October 8, 1992, against the visiting Montreal Canadiens?

Answer: Senators 5, Canadiens 3

The Sens won their first-ever game with Peter Sidorkiewicz in net. Ottawa's Neil Brady scored the first goal early in the second period. However, such results proved to be few and far between, as the Senators went on to produce a 10-70-4 record that season, good for last place in the league.
3. For how many years in a row did the Senators finish in last place in the 1990s?

Answer: 4

After coming dead last for 4 straight years, the Senators finally started to win a significant number of games, coming 15th overall in the 1996/97 season with a record of 31-36-15. Things would only get better from there!
4. Which charitable foundation and centre, named for Senators' inspirational assistant coach Roger Neilson who passed away from cancer in June 2003, worked to provide "pediatric palliative care with the objective of enhancing the comfort and quality of life for children and their families"?

Answer: Roger's House

Roger's House, in connection with the Ottawa Senators Foundation, will certainly bring much comfort and aid to those in need. This is only fitting, considering the man behind the idea was such an inspiration to everyone around him. A cancer-ridden Neilson famously gave an motivational speech to the Senators players prior to Game 5 of the 2003 Eastern Conference Final vs. New Jersey.

He could barely stand at the time, and couldn't even stick around to watch the game because he was so sick. Ottawa, down 3 games to 1, went on to win the game.
5. Who scored the winning 3rd period goal (at 17:46) in Game 7 of the 2003 Eastern Conference Final, essentially ending the Senators' Stanley Cup chances?

Answer: Jeff Friesen

Friesen somehow got past Redden and Rachunek, scoring against Lalime to take the lead and ultimately the series. It was definitely a heart-breaker: after coming back to tie the series after being down 3 games to 1, they lost in the last 2.5 minutes. The Devils, of course, went on to beat Anaheim in 7 games for the Cup.
6. Which of the following players was not traded following the 2003-04 season and prior to the start of the 2005-06 season?

Answer: Peter Bondra

Bonk was traded for a 3rd round draft pick to Los Angeles , who then immediately traded him to Montréal in a 3-way deal. Hossa was traded (with Greg de Vries) to the Atlanta Thrashers for Dany Heatley. Lalime was traded to the St. Louis Blues for a 4th round draft pick. Bondra wasn't traded, but was signed as a free agent by the Thrashers (Ottawa didn't pick him up).
7. Which player was not drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2001?

Answer: Chris Kelly

Spezza was drafted 2nd overall in 2001. The same year, goaltender Ray Emery was 99th overall, and defenceman Christoph Schubert was 127th. Chris Kelly was drafted two years earlier (1999), 94th overall, the same year as Martin Havlat (26th overall).
8. At the end of the 2003-04 season, which of the following categories did not have an Ottawa Senator in the top 3 league-wide?

Answer: Power Play Goals

Alfredsson was 1st in the league for PP Assists, with 29. Hossa and Alfredsson were 1st and 2nd respectively for PP points, the former with 39, and the latter with 38. Chara was 3rd in the league for Plus/Minus, with an overall total of +33, behind Marek Malik and Martin St. Louis (both +35). Our highest placement for PP Goals was 6th by Marian Hossa with 14. Havlat was 8th with 13, while Rick Nash led the league with 19.
9. Which of the following was not true of the Senators' 2002-03 season, their best up to that point?

Answer: The Senators led the league in power play efficiency

Amazingly, the Sens did not lose consecutive home games all season. Their six 20-goal scorers were Hossa (45), Alfredsson (27), White (25), Havlat (24), Bonk (22), and Smolinski (21). Perhaps slightly surprising, the Sens only had 7 sell-outs during the regular season (games vs. Montreal, Tampa Bay, Washington, Dallas, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Boston). Finally, the Sens were 2nd in NHL power play efficiency with a 21.2% rating, behind only Detroit.
10. Starting in 1989, who primarily put together the bid to bring the Senators back to Ottawa?

Answer: Bruce Firestone

Firestone, the first owner of the team, played an instrumental part in organizing the bid team and presentation in 1989-90. John Ziegler was the President of the NHL at the time. David Peterson was Ontario's Premier at the time, and met with the bid team throughout the process, pledging his support. Rod Bryden was the eventual owner, later replaced by Eugene Melnyk.

Initially considered a long-shot, the Senators (along with the Tampa Bay Lightning) won their bid to become one of two NHL expansion franchises on December 6, 1990.
