Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Pirate pitcher won his third game of the series over the Tigers with a complete game shutout in game 7 of the 1909 World Series?

Answer: Babe Adams

Adams came back on two days rest to win his third game of the series. Ty Cobb hit only .231 for the Series, in what turned out to be the closest he would ever come to a world championship. Cobb played for 19 more seasons, retiring after the 1928 season, but never again played in a World Series. Adams, by the way, was the last rookie to start a game 7 until John Lackey started game 7 for the Angels in the 2002 World Series.
2. Who is the New York Giant catcher who caught his foot in his mask while chasing a pop foul in the 12th inning of game 7 of the 1924 World Series, leading to the winning run scoring for the Washington Senators?

Answer: Hank Gowdy

Given new life by Gowdy's miscue, Senator hitter Muddy Ruel doubled to left. The comdedy of errors continued when Giant shortstop Travis Jackson bobbled what should have been an inning-ending grounder, followed by a grounder over the head of third baseman Freddie Lindstrom which scored Ruel for the winning run.
3. Who is the Senator shortstop whose two errors in game 7 of the 1925 World Series allowed the Pirates to score four unearned runs and beat the Senators 9-7?

Answer: Roger Peckinpaugh

Although Peckinpaugh had won the American League MVP that year, his World Series peformance was hardly of MVP caliber. He made eight errors in the Series, an astounding total, and hit only .250.
4. The 1926 World Series ended oddly when what New York Yankee player was thrown out trying to steal second?

Answer: Babe Ruth

5. Which Cardinal hard slide into third resulted in a 20-minute delay in game 7 of the 1934 World Series, when frustrated Tiger fans pelted the field with food and bottles?

Answer: Joe Medwick

Comissioner Landis ordered Medwick removed from the field so the game could continue. The Cardinals already had an insurmountable lead, and went on to win the game 11-0.
6. Jumping ahead to 1946, which St. Louis Cardinal scored the winning run in game 7 with his 'mad dash' around the bases, scoring from first on a single to left?

Answer: Enos Slaughter

A slight hesitation by surprised Red Sox shortstop Johnny Pesky gave Slaughter just enough time to slide safely into home.
7. Years of frustration ended for the Brooklyn Dodgers when they finally won a world championship in 1955. Whose spectacular catch in left preserved the shutout for the Dodgers in game 7?

Answer: Sandy Amoros

8. The following year the Yankees got revenge on the Dodgers, when what pitcher threw a 3-hit shutout in game 7 in his only start in the Series?

Answer: Johnny Kucks

Larsen had pitched his famous pefect game two days earlier in game five.
9. The Braves brought Milwaukee its first world championship in 1957 when what pitcher won his third game of the Series in game 7?

Answer: Lew Burdette

Burdette started games 2, 5, and 7, beating 3 different Yankee pitchers. He bested Bobby Shantz in game 2, Whitey Ford in game 5, and Don Larsen in game 7. Braves' ace Warren Spahn was scheduled to start game, 7, but turned up sick on game day so Burdette was picked to start instead on only two days rest.
10. Bill Mazeroski's famous home run won the 1960 World Series for the Pirates over the Yankees, making a winner of which Pirates pitcher who relieved in the 9th inning and kept the score tied?

Answer: Harvey Haddix

Haddix is, of course, better known for his 12-inning perfect game which he lost in the 13th, during the 1959 regular season.
11. The 1962 World Series ended dramatically when which San Francisco Giant slugger lined out hard to second with the tying and winning runs on base?

Answer: Willie McCovey

Bobby Richardson's catch of McCovey's line drive preserved a 1-0 complete game shutout win for Yankee starter Ralph Terry. This provided a welcome redemption for Terry, who was the loser in game 7 two years earlier when he served up the famous gopher ball to Bill Mazeroski which ended the 1960 Series.
12. Which Yankee manager was fired the day after losing the 7th game of the 1964 World Series to the Cardinals?

Answer: Yogi Berra

The Yankees fired Berra and hired Johnny Keane away from the world champion Cardinals. However, the Yankees finished 6th the next year, and would not get back to the World Series until 1976. As a result of his untimely firing, Berra held a grudge against the Yankees for many years, and refused to set foot in Yankee Stadium until Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner, in response to Joe DiMaggio's deathbed request, called Berra and apologized in 1999.
13. Ther have been only five pitchers who have won 3 games in a best-of-7 World Series. Two of these were back-to-back in 1967 and 1968? Who were these two October heroes?

Answer: Bob Gibson and Mickey Lolich

Gibson was the Cardinal ace and a natural choice to lead the Cards to the 1967 world championship. Lolich, however, was a surpise in the 1968 Series, since Denny McLain had won 30 games that year for the Tigers.
14. What Oakland Athletics pitcher set a record by appearing in all 7 games of the A's 7-game World Series victory over the Mets in 1973?

Answer: Darold Knowles

15. Whose 11th-inning hit drove in the winning run in the seventh game of the 1997 World Series, making the Florida Marlins world champions in only their fifth season?

Answer: Edgar Renteria

In one of the most dramatic game 7's ever, the Marlins tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th, and then won it in the bottom of the 11th, denying the Cleveland Indians their first world championship since 1948.
