"Lost": "The Numbers" Quiz

Hurley was watching television while his mother complained about him not being out on Saturday night. Hurley flipped through the channels and landed on the lottery drawing. The male spokesperson introduced Mary Jo, and she announced the winning numbers for the record jackpot of $156 million after the sixteenth drawing week. (The broadcaster was played by Harold Perrineau's (Michael) real-life wife.)

While being interviewed by the news reporters Hurley introduced his grandfather, Tito, and said that the first thing he would do with the money was give Tito the rest he deserved. According to Hurley, his grandfather had worked three jobs for 52 years, and he was now 70 years old, making him 18 years old when he began working.

Jack was interested in finding the French woman to look for batteries to power Michael's S.O.S signal on the raft. He asked Sayid about the maps, and Sayid told him that the area was called the "Dark Territory" by Danielle. He implored to Jack, "Does that sound like a place that you want to go?"

While Jack and Sayid argued about the map and the quest for batteries, Hurley recognized the numbers he believed had jinxed his life. They were written seven times on the page. The discovery intrigued Hurley, because he had come to Australia looking for these answers, and became obsessed with finding them on the island.

While being interviewed by the news reporters, Hurley introduced Liza with his brother Diego. Liza was mentioned again later as part of Hurley's chain of bad luck, when she left Diego and he moved back home.

Hurley was driving with his mother to the beautiful new house he was going to surprise her with, and he began recounting the mis-fortunate events. The three events he named while driving were the death of his grandfather, a freak lightning incident that occurred at his funeral, and Liza leaving Diego. Hurley wondered if the money was cursed, and his fears were confirmed after his mother broke her ankle, her new house caught fire, and Hurley was arrested after being mistaken for a drug dealer!

Hurley had suddenly remembered where he could find the meaning behind the cursed numbers, and headed to the mental hospital to see Lenny. (He was arguing with the woman at the desk, behind the "Psychiatric Admitting" sign.) Upon visiting Lenny, Hurley learned that the answers he sought could be found in Australia.

The first time, when Hurley arrived at Sam's house and encountered his wife, she said, "If it weren't the middle of nowhere, I'd say you were lost". The second person to say "lost" was Danielle, when she told Hurley that because of the numbers she had "lost" everything.
It seemed as though the numbers possessed a power of their own, and had brought everyone to the island.

Answer: An excuse

During the visit, Hurley learned that Sam and his friend Lenny had served in the Navy together and had picked up on a strange transmission in the Pacific repeating the numbers sixteen years ago. After Hurley said that he thought the numbers were bad luck, Sam's wife looked awestruck as she told Hurley not to blame the numbers. "You make your own luck, Mr. Reyes. Don't blame the numbers. You're looking for an excuse that doesn't exist."

When meeting with the broker Hurley learned that, in fact, his stocks were rising. It was revealed that Hurley was the majority stockholder for a prosperous box company in Tustany, California (which was, in fact, the company Locke worked for). Hurley was also informed that a sneaker factory he had invested in had burned in Canada.

It was then that Hurley realized it was not his money that was cursed- it was the lottery numbers. Just as the man Hurley consulted with said curses didn't exist, a man tumbled down outside their window.

Sawyer was trying to read his book on the beach and sarcastically asked if Michael wanted to hit the raft a little harder. Walt suggested that Sawyer help with the raft, and Sawyer replied that he was helping- he was looking for arsonists.

Answer: Connect Four

Hurley was determined to stop the bad luck, and yelled at a janitor to stop putting up a light bulb. When Hurley arrived, Lenny was chanting the numbers to himself, over and over, as he placed the red and black chips into the "Connect Four" game.

Poor Hurley's luck just kept getting worse, even after he was $156 million richer.
Later it was revealed that the police had somehow mistaken him for a drug dealer. (It was too bad they were so preoccupied with a false arrest to realize that a woman was laying on the curb with a broken ankle and a house was burning down.)

Locke and Claire were working all day on a "special project" which was not revealed to Claire until the end. She told Locke that it was her birthday and when he announced that they were done, he flipped it over and said, "Happy birthday" as he gave her the cradle. There seemed to be symbolism here, as the project didn't make sense until it was turned over- possibly like the numbers?

After Hurley, Jack, Sayid and Charlie became separated, Hurley finally found Danielle and learned that she had changed the transmission that repeated the numbers. Danielle was the only person to agree with Hurley that the numbers were cursed, and he was so grateful that he was able to connect with her like Sayid wasn't.

The others were shocked as Hurley handed Jack the coveted battery and told Sayid, "She says hey". In the final scene of the episode, the numbers were inscribed like a serial number someplace on the island: 4-8-15-16-23-42. Whether it was the hatch, the fuselage or even the ship Danielle had come on, it was clear that the numbers were responsible for everyone becoming "lost" after all.
