Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 'Boil My Water' Detour option in Argentina in Leg 2 required teams use which of these to make a kettle boil?

Answer: Solar energy

At Cafayate Town Square in Argentina, teams received a Detour clue from a chasqui. For this first Detour of the race, teams got to choose between 'Boil My Water' and 'Light My Fire'. In 'Boil My Water', teams visited one of three villages to build a solar kitchen using the picture on the side of its box.

When they could boil a kettle of water, they could continue on. In 'Light My Fire', teams collected clay and wood from a riverbed and, using a donkey, took it one mile to a pottery workshop. Only Art and JJ completed 'Light My Fire'. Following this, teams took a nineteen hour long bus ride to Buenos Aires.
2. In Paraguay in Leg 3, teams completing the 'Stacked Up' Detour option had to stack which of these?

Answer: Watermelons

Arriving in the city of Asunción for the third leg of the race, teams could choose either 'Stacked Up' or 'Strung Out' for their Detour options. Though most teams went straight to 'Stacked Up', it proved to be a tougher task than let on as they needed to create a pyramid of watermelons with a base of ten by ten. Only Art and JJ, Joey 'Fitness' and Danny, and Vanessa and Ralph completed the task.

In 'Strung Out', the remaining teams had to restring thirty-six strings on a harp. Rachel and Dave opted out of completing both tasks, using their Express Pass to skip 'Strung Out'.
3. Visiting Turin, Italy in Leg 4, what type of food did teams need to eat, memorize, and name off during one of their Detour options?

Answer: Salami

Hopping across the Atlantic and heading to Turin, Italy for the fourth leg of the race, teams completed a Detour task to end off their challenges for the day. In 'Clean That Statue', teams had to maintain city statues, carefully cleaning a single statue to a city worker's approval. Joey 'Fitness' and Danny, Rachel and Dave, Nary and Jamie, Vanessa and Ralph, and Mark and Bopper completed this task. Brendon and Rachel and Kerri and Stacy completed 'Name That Salami' during which they needed to locate Gastronomia Salumeria and taste-test fourteen distinct salamis before travelling a half kilometer on-foot to Piazza Vittorio Veneto and identifying all of them by their correct names. Art and JJ did not complete the Detour, having won the Fast Forward.
4. In Leg 5, teams visiting Bavarian Germany had the opportunity to complete the 'Fairy Tale' Detour option during which they were handed a clue from who of these?

Answer: A witch

Reaching Southern Germany in Leg 5, teams could choose from either 'Fairy Tale' or 'Champion Male'. In 'Fairy Tale', teams had to head to Oberammergau and follow a gingerbread trail to a witch's house, picking up enough pieces of gingerbread along the way to construct the roof of a gingerbread house. Once their house was decorated they could trade it to the witch for their clue. Brendon and Rachel, Kerri and Stacy, and Mark and Bopper did this.

In 'Champion Male', teams instead had to head to Unterammergau and prepare a man for an extreme beard styling competition, recreating a wacky beard based on a photo provided. Art and JJ, Joey 'Fitness' and Danny, Rachel and Dave, Vanessa and Ralph, and Nary and Jamie went for this one.
5. In the sixth leg of the race, teams chose either 'Oil' or 'Apples' in which Eurasian capital city?

Answer: Baku

Leaving Bavaria in Leg 6, teams took a trip to the unvisited "Amazing Race" destination of Azerbaijan, spending a day in the capital city of Baku. To end off the leg, teams chose between 'Apple' and 'Oil'. In 'Apple', teams travelled to a market to search a Soviet car used to transport produce into the city. Looking through one ton of apples, they had to find one marked with a race flag. Nary and Jamie, Vanessa and Ralph, and Joey 'Fitness' and Danny completed this task.

In 'Oil', teams instead visited the Naftalan Health Center to clean a client soaked in crude oil (apparently a health regimen) using a metal shoehorn, then remove any excess oil with water and sponges. Brendon and Rachel, Art and JJ, and Bopper and Mark completed this odd task. Rachel and Dave did not finish this task since they claimed the Fast Forward, skipping it and the Road Block.
6. Teams completing the 'Courtship' Detour task in Tanzania (in Leg 7) had to jump up and down for how long?

Answer: One minute

Teams descended into Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania in Leg 7 and once there they biked into Seneto Village to join locals in either 'Marksmanship' or 'Courtship'. In 'Marksmanship', teams had to learn to hunt on a training range, throwing a rungu to hit a spinning target. If both team members could hit one target they could move on. Art and JJ, Dave and Rachel, Nary and Jamie, and Vanessa and Ralph did this.

In 'Courtship', they instead had to join Maasai warriors to perform a jumping ritual, jumping up and down in place for a full minute. Brendan and Rachel and Mark and Bopper completed this quick task at the expense of their own physical stamina (at more than two kilometres above sea level).
7. In Leg 8, how many teams were U-Turned and forced to complete the 'Water Supply' side of the Detour in Tanzania?

Answer: Two

In Karatu, Tanzania, teams either completed 'Air Supply', in which they had to repair and mend a punctured bike tire using local methods, or 'Water Supply', in which they had to pick up, fill, and deliver water from a local well. Only Art and JJ opted to take 'Water Supply' initially, but they U-Turned Brendon and Rachel immediately after (who subsequently U-Turned Vanessa and Ralph).

As such, the teams risked elimination by waiting in a significantly long line to collect water. Neither team was eliminated; Nary and Jamie were too far behind from the previous leg.
8. Which team completed the 'Cricket' Detour task in Kochi, India in Leg 9?

Answer: Brendon and Rachel

Collecting a clue from an Indian Coffee House in Kochi, India, teams located their Detour near the end of Leg 9. For this one, teams could choose either 'Cricket' or 'Clutch It'. In 'Cricket', each team member needed to hit one ball past a professional player to a boundary on the field.

In 'Clutch It', teams had to properly drive an auto rickshaw around an obstacle course at a local driving school. Brendon and Rachel, Art and JJ completed 'Cricket' while Rachel and Dave, Vanessa and Ralph, and Mark and Bopper completed 'Clutch It'.
9. In the tenth leg of the race, who was the only team to attempt the 'Pack a Box' Detour option over 'Pachyderm' in India?

Answer: Art and JJ

Finding a clue in the hands of a barber beneath an ancient tree in Fort Kochi, teams were pushed into a Detour choice between 'Pachyderm' and 'Pack a Box'. In 'Pachyderm', teams had to decorate an elephant with ornaments and headdresses before wheeling fifteen barrows of manure. 'Pack a Box' instead sent teams to a ginger processing centre where they had to box up fifteen sifted crates of ginger, label the crates, then deliver them to get their next clue. Only Art and JJ went for the latter task while Mark and Bopper went for the Fast Forward, skipping both. Following this, all teams went to the Pit Stop.
10. All four remaining teams in Leg 11 (Osaka, Japan) opted to eat sushi during their Detour tasks.

Answer: False

In Leg 11, at the top of the Umeda Sky Building, teams had to choose either 'Bingo Shout-Out' or 'Photo Cut-Out'. In 'Bingo Shout-Out', teams travelled to a local sushi restaurant to play sushi bingo, pulling items of food labelled with letters off a conveyor belt and properly matching them up with their bingo card.

When they got a full line and correctly slotted in the types of sushi, they could eat them and receive their next clue. Only Rachel and Dave didn't do this, instead going to 'Photo Cut-Out' to try to convince locals to take Polaroid photos with sumo wrestler standees.
