Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the first leg, teams commenced the race in California at which of these locations?

Answer: A vineyard

Arriving at the Bridlewood Estate Winery in a biking peloton, teams were given the go signal to begin the race in Santa Barbara, California. To begin the race, teams needed to head into the fields behind them and search small, hanging balloons attached to the vine fences for one of eleven containing their next clue; the field contained one hundred total balloons.

When they received their clue, they could head to the Ford Tauruses waiting for them in the parking lot, drive to the airport, and embark upon their race around the world.

The first six teams to complete this task would receive tickets on an earlier flight to their destination.
2. In Leg 1, teams needed to make their way to Santa Bárbara, a town in which South American country?

Answer: Argentina

Heading to the airport, teams discovered that they needed to leave Santa Barbara, California and take a flight to Salta, Argentina to locate Santa Bárbara, a town in the Argentine countryside. Once they landed, they'd need to drive to the town's welcome sign to locate their first route marker.

This task proved straightforward for the teams as they connected through Buenos Aires but the two-and-a-half hour distance between the two flights immediately put the back-runners into a rush to avoid elimination.
3. For the Road Block in Leg 1, one team member needed to locate a landing spot while the non-participating team member needed to do which of these tasks?

Answer: Skydive

Reaching Santa Bárbara, teams needed to drive to the Aerodromo Gilberto Lavaque where they would find their Road Block for the first leg of the race. In a surprise twist, teams were asked for 'the member with the best direction'. That selected team member needed to locate a landing spot using a map while their partner would be performing a tandem skydive (from 10,000ft) with an instructor. When the partners reunited they would receive their next clue.
Art, Brendon, Dave, Jamie, Ralph, Andrew, Danny, Bopper, Maiya, Kerri, and Dave all completed the task while their partners jumped.
4. In Leg 1, teams needed to compete in a competition involving the making of which national food?

Answer: Empanadas

After the Road Block task, teams needed to drive themselves through Cafayete, Argentina to the Patios de Cafayate Winery to find their next clue waiting at the entrance. For this task, teams needed to head inside to watch a demonstration about how to make meat empanadas and cheese empanadas; both types of empanadas would need to be crimped differently. Once teams made sixty of each type and had them approved by a chef, they would be able to race on foot to the next Pit Stop on the winery grounds.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Leg 1?

Answer: Misa and Maiya

After completing the empanada challenge at the Patios de Cafayate Winery, teams needed to get their bags and proceed on foot to the next Pit Stop on the winery grounds. The first team to arrive, by mere moments, was Rachel and Dave who ended up winning the Express Pass for their victory.

The Express Pass could be used on any task up to and including Leg 8. In the end, although Misa and Maiya left the empanada task before Joey "Fitness" and Danny, their accidental neglect to see the Pit Stop merely a few meters away resulted in their elimination by only a few minutes.
6. Which team was the only one to complete the 'Light My Fire' Detour option in Leg 2?

Answer: Art and JJ

In the beginning of Leg 2, teams departed from the first Pit Stop at the Patios de Cafayate Winery in the middle of the night and were instructed to proceed to the Cafayate Town Square where they would receive their next clue from a mounted postman known as a chasqui the next morning. All ten teams ended up waiting several hours until the inevitable arrival and they obtained their Detour task.

The first of these, 'Light My Fire', was completed by Art and JJ, who needed to gather forty pieces of wood and clay from a riverside, load it onto a donkey, then travel on foot one mile to deliver it to a pottery shop.
7. In the 'Boil My Water' Detour task in Leg 2, teams needed to use which of these devices to boil a kettle of water?

Answer: A solar kitchen

In 'Boil My Water', teams needed to visit one of three isolated pampa villages where they could obtain a solar kitchen from the back of a truck and assemble it properly. Once this was done, they would need to correctly position it, place a kettle inside, and bring the water to a boil. All of the teams excluding Art and JJ completed this task which required a bit of technical know-how and patience to finish.
After the Detour, teams would be able to depart from Salta.
8. In Leg 2, teams needed to take a trip that was over eighteen hours by which means of transportation?

Answer: Bus

After the Detour, teams ended up needing to make their way to the Salta Bus Terminal to board a bus to the Argentinean capital city, Buenos Aires, an eighteen hour journey overnight. Upon their arrival in this major city, teams needed to head to Mercado de Hacienda de Liniers to locate their next clue, the second Road Block of the race.
The bus trip proved to be a trial for a number of teams-- an unforeseeable issue involving a broken window resulted in one bus falling behind by several hours.
9. The marketplace Road Block in Leg 2 involved calculating the average weight of which animals being auctioned off?

Answer: Cattle

Reaching Mercado de Hacienda de Liniers, teams needed to select a member to answer 'where's the beef?'. For this task, both members would proceed to the nearby marketplace to engage in a cattle auction. To receive their clue, teams needed to count the amount of cattle in the corral being auctioned off and use the total weight, given by the auctioneer, to calculate the average weight per cow in the pen. If they could relay the correct answer to the nearby gauchos before the lot was sold, they would receive their next clue.

They could not use a calculator. Rachel, Rachel, JJ, Mark, Nary, Stacy, Vanessa, Danny, Dave, and Andrew completed this math-heavy task.
10. Which team was eliminated in Leg 2?

Answer: Dave and Cherie

After the Road Block, teams were given the last clue of the leg directing them to the second Pit Stop underneath a two hundred year old rubber tree known as El Gomero in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The first team to arrive, for the second consecutive leg of the race, was Rachel and Dave.

They ended up winning a trip for two to Grenada courtesy of Travelocity. After their bus fell behind and they faltered during the Road Block, it was Dave and Cherie who arrived in tenth. They became the second team eliminated from the race.
