Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'An Unearthly Child', Barbara lends Susan a thick history book to read. To Barbara and Ian's astonishment, Susan says she'll finish reading it by tomorrow. What is the book called?

Answer: The French Revolution

Barbara and Ian leave Susan in the classroom with the book. She immediately turns to a page and begins remarking upon how wrong it is, sparking our curiosity as to how she could possibly know. The TARDIS crew would later visit France at the time of revolution, in 'The Reign of Terror'.
2. Barbara and Ian inadvertently join the TARDIS crew when the Doctor dematerialises without their consent, effectively kidnapping them. What prompts him to do so?

Answer: Susan says she'd rather leave him than leave the 20th century

Once the teachers have seen inside the TARDIS, the Doctor believes they will make life difficult for him and Susan, so he doesn't want to let them go or risk staying in 1963 any longer. Susan pleads with him to let them out, promising that they won't tell anyone anything, and crying that she'd rather stay in the 20th century than have him uproot her again. That is the final straw for the Doctor, who sneakily dematerialises to stop her leaving, and then cannot get back.
3. In 'The Daleks', the Doctor impresses Barbara and Ian with an astonishing piece of technology: the TARDIS food machine. What meal do they request?

Answer: Bacon and eggs

The food machine creates nutritious bars that replicate the taste of any food. Ian remarks that the bacon is rather salty. The Doctor objects. "It shouldn't be," he says. "It's English!" They all laugh.
4. Who is the first person in 'Doctor Who' to encounter a dalek?

Answer: Barbara

Barbara becomes isolated in the dalek city, wandering around corridors alone. The first episode of this story ends with Barbara cowering against a wall as something unseen and frightening - with a moving mechanical arm - comes towards her...
5. In 'The Edge of Destruction', the TARDIS gives the crew clues to alert them to the fact that something is horribly wrong. One such clue involves a clock in the console room. What happens to the clock?

Answer: It melts

The phenomenon is a signal from the TARDIS that there is a problem to do with time. Ian's watch is also melted. The melted clock face elicits a terrified scream from Barbara, followed by a similarly horrified reaction from the rest of the crew. Just some of the bizarre behaviour the characters display in this funny little story.
6. In 'Marco Polo', who is it that describes Susan as "a wicked goldfish", when they are watching fish in a pond together?

Answer: Ping-Cho

Susan makes close friends with Ping-Cho, who is the same age as her. They spend the story having many adventures together, and are heartbroken when separated by Marco. Ping-Cho risks her life to get the TARDIS key for Susan, and Susan herself makes an especial effort to say goodbye to Ping-Cho, as she promised to do.
7. The Doctor wins thirty-five elephants, four thousand white stallions, twenty-five tigers, the sacred tooth of Buddha, and all the commerce from Burma for a year. What game is he playing?

Answer: Backgammon

The Doctor is playing against Kublai Khan, trying to win back the TARDIS, which Marco wants to give to the Khan as a gift. In one final game, he wagers all of these winnings against it. Unfortunately, he loses everything. He only regains access to the TARDIS later when Marco feels obliged to give the keys back to re-establish his integrity as a trustworthy person.
8. In the city of Morphoton on Marinus, the residents are under an illusion that their lives are plentiful and every wish is granted. The Doctor wishes for a perfect laboratory, but when he enters his lab - under the illusion that it is filled with equipment - we the viewers can see only a single object in there. What is it?

Answer: A dirty cup

The Doctor and Ian admire the sophistication of the lab. The Doctor picks up the old mug and comments with wonder that with equipment like that, he is sure to be able to fix the time mechanism on the TARDIS.
9. In episode 4 of 'The Keys of Marinus' - also known as 'The Snows of Terror' - the wild man Vasor tries to kill Ian by putting something in his satchel. What?

Answer: Raw meat

Ian leaves Vasor's hut to search for his friend and ally, Altos, in the freezing snows. The smell of the raw meat attracts wolves, which Vasor had hoped would attack and kill Ian. He's a nasty piece of work, that Vasor, and later tries to kill them all by destroying their rope bridge in the ice caves.
10. In 'The Aztecs', Barbara is mistaken for a reincarnation of the high priest Yetaxa, and is consequently treated as a goddess. What signifies to the Aztecs that Barbara is Yetaxa?

Answer: The coiled serpent bracelet on her arm

Barbara is at first arrested by soldiers, but then the high priest of knowledge and his guards see the bracelet, which she had luckily put on in Yetaxa's tomb just before. There have been two other memorable serpent-on-arm moments in 'Doctor Who'. The third Doctor's forearm has a tattoo of a serpent, which is visible in 'Spearhead from Space' and 'The Silurians'. And characters possessed by the Mara - notably Tegan - carry a pink serpent design on their arms in 'Kinda'.
11. The Doctor meets a woman, Cameca, in the gardens of the Aztec city, and unwittingly proposes marriage to her. How does he manage to do this?

Answer: He makes her a cup of cocoa

The drinking of cocoa has a special meaning, and by offering to make the drink the Doctor is declaring his love. Cameca joyfully says that she accepts with all her heart, but the significance of this seems to pass the Doctor by. When he finally realises what he has done, he nearly loses his cocoa.
12. In an un-televised adventure which the Doctor speaks about at the start of 'The Sensorites', King Henry VIII threw something at the Doctor. What was it?

Answer: A parson's nose

The king threw a parson's nose at the Doctor, and the Doctor threw it right back. The king then ordered him and Susan to the Tower, which was what they wanted because the TARDIS was there. The scene in which this story is told is a bit of an oddity, because the characters stand around summarising their adventures so far for the audience, who presumably already know. (NB: a parson's nose is part of a cooked chicken.)
13. The Sensorites are a funny-looking bunch of aliens, who have flat disc-shaped feet and hairy faces. As the story progresses, we learn that an illness is afflicting their population and many of them are dying. What is the cause of the illness?

Answer: Poisoned water

A group of humans who became lost during a past expedition to Sense-Sphere have gone mad and are poisoning the Sensorites' water supply with deadly nightshade. Ian succumbs to it too, but of course is saved in time.
14. In 'The Reign of Terror', the Doctor's companions are all imprisoned. Susan and Barbara try to dig their way out of their cell, but their efforts are halted. What does Susan see that makes her stop digging?

Answer: Rats

Both Susan and Barbara are exhausted by their efforts, and Susan is on the way to falling ill. Upon seeing the rats, she cannot bear to go on any longer. Barbara indulges her phobia by putting back the bricks they had dislodged, though they seem a little quick to give up, when the alternative is Madame Guillotine.
15. In the very last episode of the first season, Ian and Barbara infiltrate a pub disguised as bar staff. While in disguise, they spy a famous person having a secret liaison there. Who is it?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

Ian and Barbara have volunteered to take on this job as spies for their counter-revolutionary friends, who know that an important meeting is going to take place with the person who might be the next ruler of France! Naturally, they want to know who this person is.

It's surprising that the very knowledgeable history teacher, Barbara, doesn't guess who it is. But that wouldn't be as much fun.
