Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many people in the past have sacrificed their lives for the Doctor. This time it was reversed. Whose life did the Doctor sacrifice his own to save?

Answer: Wilf Mott

Wilf, Donna's grandfather, acted as the Doctor's companion in this final outing for this particular Doctor. Wilf knew that the Doctor had been told about his upcoming death with the ominous words "he will knock four times". After disaster had seemingly been averted, Wilf found himself trapped and knocked four times for the Doctor to let him out.

The only way for the Doctor to free Wilf was to expose himself to the dangerous radiation that would have killed Wilf. Wanting the Doctor to live, Wilf told the Doctor to abandon him, but the Doctor changed places anyway.
2. Having some time before his eventual regeneration, the Doctor took his "reward" as he called it, going back to visit those that meant much to him through the years. What last thing did he do for Martha Jones?

Answer: Saved her from a Sontaran

Not only did the Doctor save Martha, he also saved Mickey Smith. Mickey was first introduced as Rose Tyler's boyfriend, but Rose eventually fell in the love with the Doctor. When the Doctor saw Martha and Mickey for the final time, they are acting free lance beyond the boundaries of UNIT and Torchwood. Surprisingly, Mickey revealed to the audience that he and Martha were now married. Freema Agyeman, who played Martha, was listed as Martha Jones-Smith in the credits.

They only see the Doctor from a distance before he moved on to see others.
3. On his next stop on the nostalgia train, the Doctor visited Sarah Jane Smith. What did the Doctor do for Sarah Jane in his farewell to her?

Answer: Rescued her son, Luke

Luke was on the phone, crossing the street. The Doctor grabbed Luke from an oncoming car that Luke hadn't seen. Luke immediately knew it was the Doctor and rushed to tell Sarah Jane. The Doctor and Sarah Jane didn't say a word to each other, but she knew the tenth Doctor's time had come as he sadly waved good-bye.

She had traveled with the third and fourth incarnations of the Doctor. She came in contact with other Doctors and was the main character in a spin-off, "The Sarah Jane Chronicles".
4. In his farewell to Captain Jack Harkness, the Doctor cheered up his old friend. Which character from the Doctor's travels did he set-up with Captain Jack?

Answer: Alonso Frame

The Doctor met Alonso on a space traveling Titanic doomed to hit the Earth. Fortunately Alonso kept the ship afloat long enough for the Doctor to save it. Plus, the Doctor was able to fulfill his dream of saying, "allons-y, Alonso". Captain Jack, always the flirt with pretty much anything, was quite happy and gave the Doctor a cheerful and praising salute.

The scene occurred in a bar which featured other creatures from the Doctor's journey, including a Judoon, an Adipose, a Hath, and others. In the background, the song "My Angel Put the Devil in Me" sung by Yamit Mamo can be heard.

It was also played in the episode "Daleks in Manhattan".
5. In another moment, the Doctor visited Verity Newman, the granddaughter of Joan Redfern. How did Verity know about the Doctor?

Answer: She found the journal her grandmother had.

The Doctor first met Joan Redfern when he became human and forgot his Time Lord life. Calling himself John Smith, he fell in love with the widowed nurse and shared that he was having dreams of a hero, called the Doctor. He wrote them down in "The Journal of Impossible Things".

After the Doctor became a Time Lord again, she turned down his offer to be his companion. Verity found and published the book, and the Doctor met her at a book signing. In response to his question, Verity assured the Doctor that Joan was happy in the end. Verity was played by Jessica Hynes, who also played Joan. Verity was also the name of one of the original producers, Verity Lambert.
6. Donna was shown throughout the episode even thought the spotlight was on Wilf. What was Donna Noble up to the last time the Doctor saw her?

Answer: Getting married

Wilf mentioned earlier in the episode the Donna was happily engaged to Shaun Temple. While both were living on meager earnings, they made it work. As a wedding gift, the Doctor got them a lottery ticket bought with a quid he had borrowed from Donna's father, who was deceased. One can assume the Doctor gifted a winning ticket.

The Doctor first met Donna when she was about to get married. Tragically, the Doctor had to avoid Donna since her memories could kill her if she remembered who he was. He said his farewell to Wilf and her mother, Sylvia.
7. Rose Tyler was in some sense the love of Ten's life and probably why he saved her for last. In what circumstance did the Doctor see Rose for his final time?

Answer: Just before she met him

It was just past midnight on New Year's Day. Jackie was slightly depressed, and Rose cheered her up by saying that there was a man for her out there. After separating from her mother, Rose spotted the Doctor in the shadows and mistook him for a drunk.

After learning from her that it was 2005 (the year she met the Doctor), he cheerfully told her, "I bet you're going to have a really great year". She gleefully responded, "see ya" before running off home. The Doctor was unable to see Rose in the present as she was in a parallel world and last seen with a regeneration of the Doctor with human characteristics, such as one life. Travel between parallel worlds would be too dangerous to risk a farewell.
8. As the Doctor stumbled to the TARDIS on his last legs, what kind of creature appeared to the Doctor and said the universe would sing him to his sleep?

Answer: Ood

The Doctor and Donna had freed the Ood from the slavery of mankind. They first foretold that the Doctor's song would soon end at that time. They made an appearance at the beginning of "The End of Time" with the warning of the Master's return. As the Doctor struggled off to the TARDIS for his regeneration, the Ood assured us that, "This song is ending, but the story never ends." Since David Tennant is the tenth actor to portray the Doctor, it is hard to argue this point.
9. Ten was known for being quite the talker, even saying once that he had a "big gob". What was the tenth Doctor's final line?

Answer: I don't want to go.

The tenth Doctor fought against his prophesied death tooth and nail. As he regenerated to the Ood's song, the TARDIS began to tear apart. It has been well known that the TARDIS is alive and connected to the Doctor. The TARDIS's reaction could have been a reflection of the Doctor's unwillingness.

This episode was the swan song for not only David Tennant as the Doctor, but also Russell T. Davies as head writer and Julie Gardner as executive producer. Davies and Gardner resurrected the series that had been mostly off the air.

They brought it back to life in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the title role. Tennant succeeded Eccleston, but Davies kept Rose's character to bridge the storylines.
10. As sad as the audience is during the regeneration to see the Doctor go, there is always some excitement to see the new Doctor, this time the eleventh incarnation. The Doctor is no exception. Which of the following things did the new Doctor NOT check about his new appearance even with the TARDIS burning and crashing about him?

Answer: Weight

Played by Matt Smith, the eleventh Doctor quickly did an inventory of his body parts including: legs, arms, fingers, ears, eyes, nose and a chin. He briefly thought he was a girl for a moment due to the length of his hair. To his chagrin, he found he was not 'ginger'.

The tenth Doctor exclaimed shortly after his regeneration that he always wanted to be ginger. The episode closed out with the TARDIS about to crash and an excited eleventh Doctor. Steven Moffat had taken over the head writing spot from Russell T. Davies for next "Doctor Who" series. Moffat has previously written several scripts under Davies.
