Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the soldier that the Doctor rescues at the very start of "Into the Dalek"?

Answer: Journey Blue

Journey Blue is the name of the soldier. She loses her brother at the start of the episode, and then joins the Doctor on the mission inside the Dalek. Towards the end, Journey asks the Doctor if she can come aboard the TARDIS. The Doctor says she is "nice, kind and brave" but turns down Blue's request.
Zawe Ashton played Journey. She is probably best known as Violet "Vod" Norsdtrom on the BBC comedy "Fresh Meat." Ashton has won a lot of "newcomer" awards in recent years. She is also a talented writer, winning several poetry slam competitions and having several plays performed.
2. Most of the action during "Into the Dalek" takes place on what spaceship?

Answer: Aristotle

The Aristotle is where most of the episode takes place. It is commanded by Colonel Morgan Blue, Journey's uncle. The ship has a wounded Dalek, and they need a doctor (The Doctor) to repair it. Quite naturally, the Doctor is reluctant to enter a Dalek, but the fact that Blue will kill him if he doesn't is quite persuasive. Aristotle (384-322 BCE) was the founder of philosophy.

His teachings were influential for over 2000 years. Socrates (470-399 BCE) was the teacher of Plato, who taught Aristotle. Aristotle Onassis (1906-1975) was a shipping magnate, who married Jacqueline Kennedy. Alexander of Aphrodisias was one of early followers of Aristotle.
3. "Into the Dalek" introduces a new teacher at Coal Hill School. What did Danny Pink do before becoming a teacher?

Answer: Soldier

Danny Pink was a soldier. He mentions this to Clara when they first meet. One fo his students asks Mr. Pink if he has ever killed anyone. He is reluctant to talk about the subject, but it makes him cry. Danny Pink clearly has some dark secrets. Samuel Anderson is the newest addition to the cast of "Doctor Who".

He is probably best known for his work on the long-running BBC1 soap opera "Emmerdale" playing police officer Ross Kirk. While most of his work has been in television, Anderson has made several films, including "The History Boys" (2006), which also featured James Corden (Craig, "The Lodger") and Russell Tovey (Alonzo Frame, "Voyage of the Damned").
4. How do the Doctor and his team get "Into the Dalek"?

Answer: Though the eye stalk

The Doctor, Clara and the soldiers are miniaturized, ala the cast of "Fantastic Voyage" (1966). Their pod is attached to the eye stalk and the team climbs into the Dalek.
The Doctor describes the inside of the Dalek as "the most dangerous place in the universe" and the cortex of the Dalek as "evil refined."
5. What is the nickname the Doctor gives to the broken Dalek?

Answer: Rusty

"Rusty" seems fitting for a Dalek that is so broken down it wants to destroy all other Daleks. The Doctor uses "Rusty" around a dozen times, and Clara also uses it several times.
6. What problem with the Dalek does the Doctor repair?

Answer: Radiation leak

According to the Doctor, a trionic radiation link is affecting the Dalek's brain. The Doctor seals up the leak and the Dalek is repaired. In the "no good deed goes unpunished" department, the Dalek then reverts to its evil ways and invites the rest of the Dalek fleet to attack the Aristotle.
It is Clara who goes into the Dalek's cortex and restores the memories that made it "good" in the first place. The Dalek claims that seeing the birth of a star made it realize that the universe is continually renewing itself, and that the Daleks are incapable of stopping that renewal no matter how hard they try. That leads "Rusty" to determine that Daleks are evil and must be destroyed.
"Corrosive oxidation" is a fancy term for rust.
7. The mysterious Missy returns in "Into the Dalek". Who does she greet?

Answer: Gretchen Carlisle

Gretchen Allison Carlisle sacrifices her life to allow Clara and Journey access to the Dalek's cerebral cortex. She is attacked by Dalek anti-bodies and moments after being disintegrated, she finds herself sitting with Missy.
Gretchen was played by Laura dos Santos, who appeared in "Fingersmith" (2005) and several episodes of the police procedural "The Bill" (2005-2006).
While Missy was only in "Into the Dalek" for a few seconds, it seems she is likely to play an important role in the story arc of season 8.
8. When the Doctor does a mind meld with the Dalek, what is NOT one of the things the Dalek claims to see in the Doctor's soul?

Answer: Honesty

The Doctor shows the Dalek the vastness of the universe, and the Dalek does recognize the beauty and majesty. Then the Dalek discovers the Doctor's hatred of the Daleks, and channels that. "Rusty" destroys the other Daleks on the ship.
In his final conversation with "Rusty" the Doctor contends that teaching the Dalek how to hate was not a victory from his perspective.
Since the first rule of "Doctor Who" is "The Doctor lies," it would unlikely for the Dalek to see honesty. After all, the Doctor has many secrets, and some of them must never be told.
9. What question does the Doctor ask Clara shortly after they enter the TARDIS in "Into the Dalek"?

Answer: Am I a good man?

In what is likely to be a theme for season 8, the new Doctor asks "Am I a good man?" In "Deep Breath" the Doctor spoke about the mistakes he had made in his past and the need to rectify some of them.
Clara's answer to the Doctor's question was "I don't know." At the end she told him "You try to be, and that's probably the point."
In the episode's most disturbing moment, "Rusty" told the Doctor "You are a good Dalek." In the Doctor's first encounter with Daleks in the new series, another Dalek told the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) something very similar.
10. Who directed "Into the Dalek"?

Answer: Ben Wheatley

"Into the Dalek" marks Ben Wheatey's second time directing "Doctor Who." He also helmed the season 8 opener "Deep Breath". Wheatley began as a viral video director before working with the BBC from 2006 to 2009. He made his first feature film in 2009.
Phil Ford is the co-author of "Into the Dalek" with Steven Moffat. He previously wrote "The Waters of Mars" with Russell T Davies. Ford wrote quite a few episodes of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" as well as much of the text for the online game "Doctor Who: the Adventure Games".
Michael Smiley played Colonel Morgan Blue. He is a stand-up comic and character actor, who has been in films and television since 1999.
While Nicholas Briggs is the voice of the Daleks, Barnaby Edwards is the guy who is actually inside the Dalek costume. Edwards has been the principal Dalek operator since the reboot in 2005; he has also written and acted in many "Doctor Who" audio book adventures.
