Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Kino say makes people want to go on journeys?

Answer: Seeing birds fly in the sky

Kino first hears this from older Kino, though the original speaker is unknown. She speaks of traveling like it's a profession.
2. In "A Tale of Feeding Off Others", how do the slave dealers know that Kino has another gun besides the revolver?

Answer: The wounds in the rabbits that she shot could not have been made by a revolver

Very clever of them. Luckily, Kino also has a knife gun with laser sights, so she dispatches them. Kino wonders in this episode if humans have an obligation to take care of other humans, even at the expense of other creatures.
3. In "Land of Adults", does the motorrad Hermes speak before older Kino is stabbed?

Answer: No

Hermes first speaks after older Kino is killed, telling little Kino that they better leave. She jumps on and escapes the town. "Kino" is not her birth name--she names herself after the traveler. She's forgotten her real name but remembers that it was the name of a flower; she didn't like it because when pronounced differently, it sounded like an insult. (Thus, her name may have been Sakura.)
4. The relationship between rider and motorrad is symbiotic. The motorrad provides speed while the rider provides what?

Answer: balance

Without balance, Hermes just fall over. However, this doesn't mean that motorrads don't also need gas and a working speedometer. "Motorrad", the Japanese word for motorcycle, is a loan word from German.
5. What is unusual about the three men that Kino finds working on the railroad?

Answer: They've been unknowingly undoing each other's work for fifty years.

One polishes the tracks; farther down the line, another pulls them up; farther down, a third lays fresh track. Each says that the railroad company never told him to stop, so poor communication is at work here. That must be one long stretch of railroad if they've been working for fifty years and haven't finished yet.
6. Kino encounters a man all alone in his country. The people there had set up what kind of government that failed?

Answer: Democracy

The man tells her that the citizens overthrew the monarchy and started making decisions collectively. After some time, they started executing those in the minority whenever a vote was taken, so the population dwindled quickly. This vignette comes from the episode "Three Men Along the Rails".
7. At the end of "Coliseum II", what new rule does Kino add to the country?

Answer: All high-ranking citizens have to fight to determine the next ruler

Kino shoots the king during the last fight, so she adds this rule to choose the next leader. The last person alive is the new ruler, and anyone who runs from the fight loses citizenship. Both Kino and the man she was fighting in the final round make it out of the country alive.
8. Kino says, "The world is not beautiful, therefore ______."

Answer: it is

It comes from the Japanese notion that things are beautiful because they don't last forever. "The Beautiful World" is the subtitle for the series and the title of the closing song.
9. Kino visits a land where peace rules. How do this country and its neighboring country keep the peace with each other?

Answer: They join together and massacre a third group of people.

The people they kill have no way of fighting back. This solution was proposed by a woman who had lost all her children in a war and didn't want any more of their country's children killed. None of their children die, but both countries still get to channel their urge to kill.
10. Kino has a three-day limit when visiting countries. At which place does she almost stay longer than three days?

Answer: "A Kind Land"--where everyone is nice to Kino

Everyone is so kind to her that Kino wants to stay longer, but she still remains there for three days. The town makes her leave because they know a volcano is about to erupt and destroy the town. The inhabitants don't leave because life in their town is all they know.
