Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does Sipowicz pose as an elderly man in a wheelchair?

Answer: To catch thieves that steal money after elderly people cash their monthly checks

Though Sipowicz is busy looking for Danny's killers and other murders, Medavoy and Baldwin are running a case of a thief that targets the elderly. Reluctantly, Sipowicz poses as an elderly man. Sipowicz does not pose as an elderly man in a wheelchair to solve Danny's murder, nor does he to protect John or to let Gibson's niece down easily. Sipowicz is pushed in his wheelchair by Medavoy while Baldwin watches in street clothes.

They easily catch and chase and overpower the thieves despite being held at gunpoint initially by the thieves.
2. Before starting a dangerous undercover assignment, who does Bobby Simone reunite with while on a date with Benita?

Answer: Ray DiSalvo

Bobby idolized Ray growing up and when he sees him at the dance club, this causes Bobby and Lieutenant Fancy to start an undercover effort. Benita has a bad first impression from Ray. At this point of the series, Bobby and Diane have not met yet. Jerry would be a tenant of Bobby's eventually and Leticia was a skell turned out as an informant by Mike Roberts. Bobby and Ray reunite by Ray continues to show he is not trustworthy even after Bobby dies. When Ray is incarcerated he appeals to Sipowicz and Sorenson that he has key info but ends up not being for real.

Ray was played memorably by a talented actor, Jay Acovone. Acovone played Bobby Arms in "Out For Justice". Ray DiSalvo was a memorable recurring character in this show's history. Viewers may also recall this as the first hint of danger for Bobby Simone. The undercover operation does not go very far because the targets of it are all killed or arrested by others before the operation can gain much ground.
3. In their first episode together, Bobby and Diane assist in an undercover operation. What crimes are Bobby and Diane attempting to stop when they go undercover?

Answer: Arson

The sparks fly between Bobby and Diane as soon as they meet. The incorrect answers - murder, drug trafficking and kidnapping - all occur within the first two months of their shared time in the 15th Precinct. Their first undercover operation is to stop suspected arsonists. Bobby and Diane can relate to each other well on the job because the stress of solving many grisly crimes wears on them.

After her future undercover assignments, she must confront her alcoholism as she starts bringing vodka to work and being dishonest to Bobby, Andy and the entire 15th precinct. Undercover operations are important at this precinct.

They add to the stress. However this undercover operation to stop the arson is their first opportunity to work together. They start dating soon after.
4. Why does Lieutenant Fancy go undercover?

Answer: He never does go undercover

Lieutenant presides over dozens of undercover operations. He himself never goes undercover. He is promoted to captain after many years of superb service at the 15th Precinct.

The false answers all occur in the show's history. In season 11, Clark and Sipowicz investigate a man who has converted to Islam. He is played by Sam Jaeger, best known for his character Joel Graham on the "Parenthood" TV series. On the episode where they investigate Black Power militants and the jewelry store hate crime, an undercover operation to take down the cel is considered but the Feds and other interfere and the operation is never given the go-ahead. Baldwin, played by Henry Simmons, later gets involved in a custody dispute. Not Fancy.

Several episodes before Sorenson is murdered, he spies on Diane by the cover of night. While not technically undercover, Sorenson was indeed stalking her undercover. He quickly stops this behavior after self-reporting himself to Sipowicz. Sorenson takes accountability and when Diane leaves the squad, his infatuation switches to the stripper Kristen and a complex undercover operation he's working at TailFeathers. Lieutenant Fancy and Lieutant Rodriguez are the two most undercover-friendly lieutenants on the show. Fancy prefers a much more hands-off approach and to be clear, he never wears a wire or is the point man for any undercover operation. He certainly directs and presides over many.
5. Who is forced to retire when an undercover operation to stop bank robbers does not go as planned?

Answer: Commander Haverill

Captain Bass replaces Haverill. Gibson and Dalto are both short-lived lieutenants but neither are ever forced into early retirement. Lieutenant Fancy shows great strength and Haverill has no choice but to leave the job or else Fancy and others will share incriminating information on Haverill.
6. In the episode titled "Large Mouth Bass", Lesniak and Martinez participate in an operation trying to bust a con artist. What is the con artist accused of doing?

Answer: Selling boxes so that plain women could put the boxes over their head to improve their looks.

The women that are victimized by this con artist were intrigued and dumbfounded by him. Several do not come forward to report the con artist. The 15th Precinct undercover operation and interrogation is successful and the con artist is caught. In the entire series run, no one ever sells contaminated anchovies to restaurants. The other two wrong answers occur but in later seasons.
7. Before Rodriguez ascends to lieutenant of the 15th Precinct, he gains notoriety and prestige from being the key man in a major undercover operation. What was the main activity that the undercover operation wanted to stop?

Answer: Drug trafficking

Sorenson and most of the squad are impressed when they realize that Rodriguez has a successful background going undercover. He broke up a major gang and drug trafficking situation that led to his promotion. When his mother is attacked, years later, viewers may recall that this attack was a retaliation for what Rodriguez did. Sipowicz is not impressed by Rodriguez at first.
8. When Lieutenant Fancy is running a sting operation to catch a criminal taking advantage of the elderly, he is also dealing with a personal situation too. What happens at the beginning of that episode?

Answer: He is upset about being pulled over for a broken taillight and thinks the stop was racially motivated

Fancy is able to focus on the undercover operation despite the incident. The other answers are all personal situations that Fancy must deal with but none of those things happen in this episode.
9. In season 3, on an on undercover mission, Diane Russell is roughed up by an assailant suspected of rape and murder. What job does the assailant pretend to have?

Answer: Delivery man

When Diane is roughed up, Bobby and Diane smooth over the difficulties in their relationship.
10. In season 3, Bobby and Sipowicz pretend to be FBI Agents. Who is the informant they accuse of double-dealing?

Answer: Steve

They call him Steve the Snitch. Though it is hard to believe, Bobby and Sipowicz break the case and no one is the wiser. Ray tries to be an informant several times but ultimately he is not trustworthy. Patsy is never an informant. He is an old friend and mentor to Bobby. Beaten from
too many boxing fights, he now tends and races pigeons with Bobby. Harold Ng is never an informant; he is a reliable Asian cop that gets along well with the 15th Precinct personnel and helps on several cases.
