Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gav:

Answer: Journey To Babel

Gav was the Tellarite ambassador who appeared passionately against Sarek's (Mark Lenard) stand on the admission of a planet to the Federation. He was later found dead from a broken neck, with Sarek as the prime suspect!
2. Edith Keeler:

Answer: The City On the Edge of Forever

Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) ran a soup kitchen in 1930 New York City in this episode, regarded as one of the greatest in the history of "Star Trek". Joan Collins would later gain fame (notoriety?) on "Dynasty" during the 1980s.
3. Robert Fox:

Answer: A Taste of Armageddon

Robert Fox (Gene Lyons) was the Federation ambassador whose mission was to establish peaceful relations with the planet Eminiar VII, despite warnings to keep away due to an unusual war between them and Vendikar. During this mission, he witnesses Kirk and Spock employing "an unusual form of diplomacy", which was dubbed "cowboy diplomacy" in the "TNG" two-parter "Unification".
FAST FACT -- Gene Lyons went on to play Police Commissioner Dennis Randall in the TV show "Ironside".
4. Xenopolythecemia:

Answer: For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky

At the beginning of this episode, Dr. McCoy revealed to Kirk that he had xenopolythecemia, a terminal disease without any possible cure, and that he had a year left to live. Meanwhile, the Enterprise encounters an asteroid-ship known as Yonada, which (conveniently) had an advanced medical database, including a cure for McCoy's illness.
5. Janice Lester:

Answer: Turnabout Intruder

Dr. Janice Lester was a scorned woman who believed she deserved a chance to command a starship (At the time, women were not permitted to command). She feigned illness in order to literally "swap bodies" with Kirk and take command of the Enterprise.
NOTE -- This episode is the last of the original 79 on "Star Trek".
6. "Norman":

Answer: I, Mudd

Norman was an android who had commandeered the Enterprise, taking it to a planet that was inhabited by thousands of (mostly female) androids and one human: Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd (Roger C. Carmel).
FAST FACT -- Though several actors guest-starred on "Star Trek" more than once, Roger C. Carmel is the only one who wasn't a day player to do so as the same character (previously seen in Season 1's "Mudd's Women").
7. John Christopher:

Answer: Tomorrow Is Yesterday

When the Enterprise is thrown back in time to 1960s Earth, it is picked up on radar as a UFO. Capt. Christopher, an Air Force pilot, is sent to investigate the matter, but his plane ended up shattered by the Enterprise's tractor beam. The rest of the episode is spent trying to return Capt. Christopher so that his unborn son would take his place in space exploration history.
NOTE -- As of July 2004, this episode is the only one in the history of the "Star Trek" franchise to be set in Nebraska.
8. Mira Romaine:

Answer: The Lights of Zetar

Lt. Mira Romaine was an officer en route to the planet known as Memory Alpha; she had come under the Zetarians' influence in this episode. Apparently, she possessed a special mental ability that allowed the Zetarians to speak through her, though previous attempts had resulted in many deaths.
FAST FACT -- This episode was written by Jeremy Tarcher and his wife, Shari Lewis (Yes, as in Lambchop the sock puppet!).
9. Gamma II:

Answer: The Gamesters of Triskelion

Gamma II was the intended destination for Kirk, Chekov and Uhura in this episode. They were to perform routine maintenance on an unmanned communications facility on that planet. But, as soon as they stepped onto the transporter pads, they were suddenly whisked away to the planet Triskelion for the purpose of becoming "thralls" for gladiatorial combat.
10. Roberta Lincoln:

Answer: Assignment: Earth

Roberta Lincoln (Teri Garr) was the somewhat ditsy but idealistic secratary who learned a lot about her new employer, Gary Seven, when he took over the office previously occupied by a missing couple.
NOTE -- Two things: First, Teri Garr's name was misspelled "Terri" in the credits. Second, this episode was intended as a spin-off pilot for a new series called "Assignment: Earth", which NBC ("Star Trek's" network) declined.
11. Ensign Garrovick:

Answer: Obsession

Garrovick was a rarity: a "red shirt" that lives! Seriously, Ensign Garrovick was the son of Kirk's first commanding officer. Kirk had enlisted his help in baiting a trap for a mysterious cloud creature that fed on red blood corpuscles.
12. R.M. Merik:

Answer: Bread and Circuses

Captain Merik (William Smithers) was the commanding officer of the S.S. Beagle, a ship that had disappeared some years before. As it turns out, his crew had discovered a planet whose society was literally a modern-day version of Ancient Rome. When Kirk, Spock and McCoy find Merik, he is First Citizen of the city. William Smithers is probably best-known for his role as Jeremy Wendell on "Dallas".
13. Silicon Nodules:

Answer: The Devil In the Dark

The "silicone nodules" featured in this episode were actually eggs, about a million of them, of unborn creatures called Horta. The otherwise peaceful mother Horta had attacked several members of a mining colony because the men there found the nest and destroyed hundreds of the eggs without realizing what they were.
NOTE -- William Shatner considers this to be his favorite episode, primarily because of the extra effort he used to remain in character, as well as the support he had received from the cast and crew, after returning from his father's funeral.
14. Areel Shaw:

Answer: Court Martial

Areel Shaw was the prosecuting attorney in Capt. Kirk's court martial, following the death of Lt. Cmdr. Ben Finney. During the course of the trial, however, it was discovered that Finney had staged his death in an effort to take revenge against Kirk. Finney's anger was based on a log entry made by Kirk many years ago which had resulted in a minor infraction against him that prevented his ability to get his own command.
15. U.S.S. Antares:

Answer: Charlie X

The Antares was the ship that found young Charles Evans, the lone survivor of a crash several years before, on the planet Thasus. Shortly after dropping him off, though, the Antares was destroyed by Charlie's mind, which had psychokenetic powers provided to him by the Thasians. Listen for Gene Roddenberry as the voice of the flabbergasted ship's cook when he found Thanksgiving turkeys roasting in the galley ovens (instead of meat loaf)!
16. Transmuter:

Answer: Catspaw

The transmuter was the focal point of the power possessed by Korob and Sylvia in this Halloween-themed episode. This was the first episode produced with Chekov as a member of the crew.
17. Tal:

Answer: The Enterprise Incident

Subcommander Tal (Jack Donner) was second in command of one of the Romulan ships that surrounded the Enterprise in this episode. Jack Donner was also a frequent guest-star of the original "Mission: Impossible" series, with 11 appearances, more than any other guest actor on that show.
18. "Gem":

Answer: The Empath

Gem (Kathryn Hays) was the name McCoy had given to the deaf-mute title character of this episode. She was the focal point of the cruel experiments the Vians had been performing, in order to test her healing and empathic abilities. Kathryn Hays has been on the soap opera "As the World Turns" (as Kim Sullivan Reynolds Dixon Androupoulos Hughes) since 1972.
19. Halkan Council:

Answer: Mirror, Mirror

The Halkans were an exceptionally pacifistic people who had refused dilithium to the Enterprise because, despite the fact that Starfleet was a peaceful organization at heart, there was no guarantee that the dilithium would not be used for agressive purposes in the future.
20. Carolyn Palamas:

Answer: Who Mourns for Adonais?

Lt. Carolyn Palamas was an archeaologist (and Scotty's love interest) in this famous episode about the Enterprise's encounter with Apollo.
NOTE -- This is one of only a few episodes of TOS in which the Enterprise fired upon a planet (some of the others were "The Alternative Factor", "The Apple", and "A Piece of the Action").
21. Piotr:

Answer: Day of the Dove

Piotr (pronounced "Pee-oh'-tur") was whom Chekov had claimed was his brother and that he was killed in a Klingon raid. He was so convinced of this that Kirk believed him, until Sulu told Kirk that Chekov was an only child. It turns out that Piotr was invented by the alien entity that had staged the ongoing battle on the Enterprise between the Klingons and the Enterprise crew.
22. Parmen:

Answer: Plato's Stepchildren

Parmen was the leader of the Platonians, a powerful race of telepathic beings who forced members of the Enterprise crew to perform humiliating stunts for their amusement.
FAST FACT -- One of these stunts involved Kirk and Uhura being forced to kiss each other, resulting in the first-ever interracial kiss on television.
23. Dohlman:

Answer: Elaan of Troyius

Dohlman was the title of Elaan, leader of the planet Elas. In this Ancient Greek-themed episode (note the play on words in the title, based on Helen of Troy in Homer's "The Iliad"), Elaan was to marry the leader of the planet Troyius in order to bring an end to their war. Unfortunately, her tempermental (and sometimes barbaric) behavior proved to be a difficult challenge to prepare her for the marriage!
NOTE -- In "TNG", Picard would undergo a similar (though far more civilized) challenge in "The Perfect Mate".
24. U.S.S. Exeter:

Answer: The Omega Glory

The Exeter was a ship commanded by Captain Ronald Tracey (Morgan Woodward). When the Enterprise found her in orbit of Omega IV, the crew had been decimated by an unknown disease. Fortunately, the planet below offered a natural immunity to the disease, allowing Kirk and Co. to survive long enough to become immune themselves.
NOTE -- This episode, written by Gene Roddenberry, drew an interesting parallel to the Cold War, by naming the two warring factions "Yangs" (Yankees) and "Kohms" (Communists), only this time it was Democracry that ended up on the short end of the stick.
25. Losira:

Answer: That Which Survives

Losira (Lee Meriwether) was the last surviving member of an outpost, whose duty was to protect the planet on which she was stationed. When she eventually died, a holographic reprentation of her carried on those duties.
NOTE -- Lee Meriwether, who was Miss America 1955, played Catwoman in "Batman: The Movie" (1966).
