6. "The Adventures of Sherlock Homes" aired in 1984/1985, presenting the best cases of the detective. Jeremy Brett and David Burke, as Holmes and Dr. Watson respectivelly, solved my favorite cases, like "The Speckled Band" and "The Red-Headed League". Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As I was growing up, I remember watching "Perry Mason", the wonderful creation of Earle Stanley Gardner, in black and white television. We always found out who was the murderer almost at the end of the hour, in the middle of a courtroom battle. Who were his valuable assistants, his secretary and his investigator?

Answer: Della and Paul

"Perry Mason" aired from 1957 to 1966. He was played by Raymond Burr. His secretary, Della Street, was acted by Barbara Hale. His private investigator was Paul Drake. William Hopper played the role of the detective, who worked odd hours and was condemned to eat soggy hamburgers while the lawyer and his secretary were eating at fancy restaurants. William Talman played the role of Hamilton Burger, the district attorney, who could never beat Perry Mason.
2. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" was the name of the program of an anthology of mysteries and thrillers which premiered in 1955. When this program aired, Hitchcock was well known for directing movies like "Rebecca", "The Trouble with Harry" and "To Catch a Thief". There was a musical theme always played which I think it was well fitted to the type of program the show was about. This musical piece was composed by Charles Gounod. What is its name?

Answer: Funeral March of the Marionette

"Funeral March of the Marionette" was composed in 1872, originally for piano, while Gounot was living in London. It was also used once in a radio program named "The Witch Tale" and also used in films.
Charles Gounod, a French composer (1818 - 1893) is best known for his beautiful "Ave Maria", which is played in churches all over the world.
"The Carnival of the Animals" was composed by Camille Saint Saens.
Igor Stravinsky wrote "The Rite of Spring" and Tchaikovsky composed "The Seasons".
3. "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" was a program that aired only a year, 1974-75. This program was different from others because this one had an element of the supernatural. There was a strange crime committed and Kolchak would investigate it, many times when the police would not be interested. What was the profession of the Night Stalker?

Answer: Journalist

Kolchak worked for a Chicago newspaper. The series was composed of twenty episodes. Darren McGavin played Kolchak's role. This series was the inspiration for the very successful program "The X Files".
4. Who was the detective, a lieutenant with LA Police, who always wore an old raincoat, drove a Peugeot needing work and always had "one more question" for the person he knew was the murderer? By the way, we never knew the detective's first name. He said it was Lieutenant.

Answer: Columbo

Columbo, played by Peter Falk, was a brilliant detective looking like a bum.
The first episode of the series aired in 1968. Each episode began with the commission of a crime, so there were no surprises about who the murderer was. Columbo had a way of treating the murderer like an assistant until the end, when he made an arrest.
5. This program was about a coroner who was not happy with finding the causes and time of death, but he felt he needed to find the person or persons who committed the crime. The coroner's role was played by Jack Klugman. This program aired from 1976 to 1983. Name it.

Answer: Quincy, M.E.

"Quincy, M.E." was inspired by the book "Where Death Delights" by Marshall Houts. Quincy's personality was a mirror of Los Angeles coroner Thomas Noguchi, who was called "coroner to the stars" as he did the autopsies of Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Sharon Tate and other celebrities.
My most favorite case is "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches", which has more suspense, in my opinion, than any other of Holmes' adventures. Do you remember who lived at the Copper Beeches?

Answer: The Rucastle family

Jephro Rucastle was the big man who had a good sense of humor but a cruel soul. Violet Hunter was the young governess who was hired to dress a certain way so that she could be watched by someone on the outside.
7. "Agatha Christie: Poirot" was the name of the program. David Suchet played the Belgian detective, famous for his "little gray cells", his moustache and his good friend Hastings, played by Hugh Fraser. One of my favorite episodes is "Murder on the Orient Express". Do you remember who was the only person not involved in the murder of Mr. Ratchett?

Answer: Countess Andrenyi

Mr. Ratchett had been guilty of kidnapping and killing a little girl in the U.S. This murder brought about other deaths. Ratchett escaped American justice so all the people related to the victim decided to judge and kill the evil man. Countess Andrenyi, sister to Sonia Armstrong, the mother of the murdered girl, did not participate in killing Mr. Ratchet because her husband took her place to protect her.

The Orient Express was a luxury train with different journeys. In the case of this movie, the train left Istanbul and was going to Paris.
8. "The Rockford Files" dealt with private investigator Jim Rockford, who had been convicted of a crime he did not commit. He was very resourceful and had connections in the underworld. Who played Jim Rockford?

Answer: James Garner

This series aired from 1974 to 1980 and presented a detective who lived in a mobile home and had his office in the same place. He was accused of armed robbery and after some time in prison, he was pardoned because he was innocent.

Jim was relaxed and easy going, a detective who was not a superhero but a common man who hated confrontations and preferred to enjoy himself, but things always became complicated and he had to get into action.
9. We could not leave behind the unforgettable, genial, compulsive, afraid of germs Monk. Tony Shalhoub portrayed this character during eight seasons and according to Wikipedia, the series was the most watched series between 2009 and 2012. Monk always helped a police captain who had faith in Monk's abilities and welcomed Monk's ideas. This character was played by Ted Levine. What was his name?

Answer: Captain Leland Stottlemeyer

Leland Stottlemeyer believed in Monk and humored him as much as possible, but sometimes he just could not accept Monk's extravagances. He was just as emotional as Monk was, except he was a little less "unusual". After the series finale, I think I missed the captain as much as I missed Monk.
10. This program came from Great Britain. The main characters are Chief Inspector Barnaby, his wife Joyce and his assistant, either Jones, Scott or Troy. We never know who the murderer is unti the very end and I think it is always a surprise. All this happens in an area of placid and bucolic tranquility, far from the excitement of big cities. What is the name of this mystery series?

Answer: Midsomer Murders

Many of the locations used in these series are the Oxfordshire villages as well as those of Buckinghamshire. In these episodes, the villagers have secrets and things they do not want revealed but Inspector Barnaby always discovers them.

The series are based on "Chief Inspector Barnaby" by Caroline Graham.
The other three mystery series are also British and very good ones.
