Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Road Block of the race involved elephants in India.

Answer: False

While teams didn't encounter their first Road Block of the race until arriving in Jaipur, India in the third leg, it was certainly an interesting one. At the Red Elephant Temple, teams were told to head to the Bharat Driving and Maintenance School where the selected team members (Michelle, Sticky, Russ, Sue, Kym, Paul, Shane, Grace, Sarah, and Emilia) were required to take an oral and practical driving test through the streets of Jaipur until they reached their next destination-- Jaipur Market.
2. In Leg 3, teams had to count steps in an Indian step well to complete their Road Block task. Who did not complete this Road Block?

Answer: Sam

Surprisingly, the third leg had a second Road Block task awaiting teams at the ancient step well of Panna Meena ka Kund near the Amber Fort. Here, either team member could be selected for the brain teaser-type task at hand. Using a combination of forty-one steps downward and ten steps up, the team members participating had to reach a guru waiting within the well with their clue; they would only continue to the Pit Stop at the Nahargarh Fort if they made their way along the right path of stairs. Michelle, Sticky, Tarryn, Sue, Donna, Paul, Andrew, Joseph, James, and Emilia finished this task.
3. How many Arabic symbols did team members need to memorize during the Road Block found in Istanbul, Turkey?

Answer: Eight

Arriving in Istanbul, Turkey midway through the fifth leg of the race, teams received their Road Block clue sending them to the Hagia Sophia cathedral. There, one member of each team had to remember eight Arabic symbols and keep them in mind on the way to the Basilica Cistern.

There, they had to place them in order on a vertical column to get their next clue. If they forgot any of the symbols or needed to refresh their memory, they had one chance to revisit the Hagia Sophia. Sarah and Ross both failed to complete the task, instead opting to take four hour penalties upon checking into the Pit Stop.
4. Teams were Intersected during the Road Block task in Leg 6 (in Istanbul).

Answer: False

Although an Intersection was found shortly before the Road Block during this sixth leg of the race, teams did not continue with it beyond the one task. Instead, teams split up and headed to Istanbul's Old City where one member had to dance with the Whirling Dervishes, spinning for five minutes, to complete their task and head to the next Pit Stop. Steve, Jo, Joseph, Sticky, Shane, Emilia, James, and Ross took this task for a whirl.
5. In Paris in Leg 7, teams had to do which of the following at Le Cordon Bleu?

Answer: Cook

Flying from Istanbul to Paris, France in Leg 7, teams were told to make their way directly to the famous French cooking school Le Cordon Bleu where, for their Road Block, teams would take part in a cooking class to make the perfect souffle. Here, Steve, Michelle, Lucy, Grace, Sam, Andrew, and Sarah had to use ingredients and instructions (and minimal help) to properly bake the complex dish and serve it to the school's director to receive their next clue.
6. In Leg 8 in Cuba, team members could catch a fish to avoid finding which of the following during their Road Block task on the Caribbean?

Answer: An old man on the sea

Heading to the Marina Hemingway in Leg 8, teams signed up for charter boats leaving a half an hour apart from one another before commencing a timed Road Block task in which they had to use a compass and two coordinates on a map to locate an 'old man on the sea' who would have their next clue. If teams didn't want to find him, they could instead opt to catch a fish using the lines on the boat. Only Shane ended up catching the fish; everyone else found the man in the boat.
7. In Leg 9, team members completing the Road Block in Vancouver had to ride atop which of these while collecting flags?

Answer: Cable car

Heading to Grouse Mountain north of Vancouver in Leg 9, team members were told to 'reach for the stars' as they stood on top of the cable car heading three kilometers up the side of the hill. During this time, they had to collect three flags; missing one would've forced them to restart. If the selected team member failed three attempts, a four hour penalty would've been incurred. Shane, Michelle, Grace, Emilia, and Sarah ended up completing this height-centric challenge through the wilderness.
8. Team members completing the Road Block in Alberta, Canada in Leg 10 had to climb which of these?

Answer: An icy cliff

Arriving at Rundle Mountain outside of Canmore, Alberta, teams needed to choose one member to complete an ice climb up the side of a frozen waterfall in the Rocky Mountains. The task, completed by Shane, Paul, Jo, Joesph, and Lucy, took them up twenty-five meters to their next clue. For completing a task in Banff with the best time (by riding on a mechanical bull for 201 seconds), Shane and Andrew received a half hour head start completing this Road Block.
9. Which team did not reach the Road Block task at the Great Wall of China in Leg 11?

Answer: Joseph and Grace

Heading to the Great Wall in the end of the race's penultimate leg, teams had to locate the Mutianyu section for the Road Block. The goal was to break through nine rows of Chinese warriors by selecting the one warrior of each row that would allow access. If they chose wrong three times, they would have to start over again, but if they memorized the sequence they could get their clue. Paul, Jo, and Andrew completed this one while Joseph and Grace were unable to make it there in time, having run out of money. Joseph was selected for the task.
10. The final Road Block of the race involved which of the following?

Answer: Trivia questions

Heading to Fraser Island at the very end of the race, one of the final tasks of the whole thing was a Road Block. For this one, one member of each of the final three pairs (Andrew, Paul, and Michelle) needed to head out into the water and answer trivia questions hidden in clue boxes. Using coloured rings, they needed to get all five right to head onward to the final task and, subsequently, the finish line.
