Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 9, teams had to fly to what Canadian city?

Answer: Vancouver

Between Legs 8 and 9, teams left the Pit Stop in Ciénaga de Zapata, Cuba and traveled to El Capitolio in Havana. There, they opened their first clue of the ninth leg telling them to fly to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Once there, they had to get to Stanley Park and find a series of totem poles where they would receive a blessing from a Squamish priest and their next clue.

This would subsequently send them to the Vancouver Rowing Club, on foot, with two paddles in tow.
2. Which team won the only Fast Forward of the race in Canada in Leg 9?

Answer: Paul and Steve

Arriving at the Vancouver Rowing Club, teams ended up obtaining the only Fast Forward clue of the race. For this task, teams needed to head to a local art gallery and, once there, pose nude for a predetermined amount of time while getting their portraits drawn by an art class. Paul and Steve completed this task allowing them to head directly to the Pit Stop. All of the other teams, meanwhile, were told to use their paddles to kayak from the Vancouver Rowing Club to the Harbour Green Park Dock. Once there, they had to use maritime flags to decrypt a message that would result in their next clue.
3. During the Detour task in Leg 9, teams had to dress up as which of these typical Canadian stereotypes?

Answer: Lumberjack

Once teams set off after their encoded clue, they needed to make their way to Mount Seymour Provincial Park in the north end of Vancouver for a Detour. In this one, teams could choose either 'Toss' or 'Tumble'. In 'Toss', teams had to toss an axe at a log bullseye. If they hit the target ten times they would get their clue; they only had forty tosses to do so.

In 'Tumble', teams had to balance on a log suspended over a pool of water. If they could spin the log ten times they would get their next clue. For both tasks, teams had to dress up as lumberjacks. Michelle and Jo and Lucy and Emilia completed 'Tumble' while Shane and Andrew, Joseph and Grace, and James and Sarah chose 'Toss'.
4. How many flags did teams need to collect from the top of the cable car in the Leg 9 Road Block (on Grouse Mountain in Canada)?

Answer: Three

Following the Detour, teams needed to get themselves to Grouse Mountain for a Road Block. In this task, one team member (Shane, Michelle, Grace, Emilia, and Sarah) had to 'reach for the sky' as they rode on top of the Grouse Mountain cable car for three kilometers, collecting three flags on their ascent from different points on the cable line and the car itself. Failure to do so would have resulted in restarting from the very bottom.
5. Which team was eliminated in Canada at the end of Leg 9?

Answer: James and Sarah

Completing the Road Block, teams were told to head by taxi to the next Pit Stop, Crab Park in Vancouver. Because they completed the Fast Forward, Paul and Steve took a fifth first place win in a row, this time claiming a $10,000 prize from Southern Cross Travel Insurance and once again cementing their lead over the other teams.

After a series of missteps early on in the leg, James and Sarah ended up trailing through this ninth leg of the race, completely out of money, and they were eliminated in sixth place.
6. Starting Leg 10, teams took a bus to what Canadian province/territory?

Answer: Alberta

Leaving their ninth Pit Stop in Crab Park, the final five teams had to sign up for one of two charter buses leaving an hour apart for Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Upon their arrival after the fourteen hour journey, all five teams had to make their way to Wild Bill's Saloon where both members had to ride a mechanical bull for a combined time of sixty seconds.

The team with the highest combined time after all had passed through would receive an additional prize immediately after for doing so. Shane and Andrew won with a 201 second time, gaining a thirty minute head start at Rundle Mountain.
7. Which team member did not complete the ice climbing Road Block challenge in Canada in Leg 10?

Answer: Andrew

After the competition at Wild Bill's, teams were told to meet up at Rundle Mountain in Canmore, Alberta to find their next clue, and this needed to be done during the hours of operation at 8:30am. Upon their arrival, teams found the Road Block task for this leg of the race.

The question for this task: 'Who's climbing the walls?' In this task, one member of each team (Shane, Paul, Jo, Joseph, and Lucy) needed to gear up and ascend an icy cliff face twenty-five meters to collect their next clue.
8. In Leg 10, teams completed a Detour choice of either 'Search' or which of these options?

Answer: 'Ski'

Immediately after the Road Block, teams were told to head to Lake Louise, Alberta for a Detour task, a choice between 'Search' and 'Ski'. In 'Search', teams used an avalanche beacon to search a four thousand square meter area to find a transmitter in the snow.

In 'Ski', team members had to ski down a slalom course, weaving their way along a course. All five teams ended up completing 'Ski' except for Lucy and Emilia.
9. During Leg 10 in Canada, teams took which unorthodox form of transportation?

Answer: Dogsled

After the Detour, teams were told to make their way to the Great Divide Trail in Banff National Park where they would have to grab a dogsled and ride around a three kilometer course to find their next clue. The subsequent clue sent teams to Lake Louise to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise where they had to locate an ice sculpture containing their next clue.

They would only be able to break into the statue using the tools provided, amongst which were bottle openers and a high heeled shoe.
10. Which team ended Leg 10 in last place, finding themselves eliminated in Canada?

Answer: Lucy and Emilia

Breaking their clue out of the ice at Lake Louise, teams were told to make their way by car to the tenth Pit Stop of the race, the Banff Springs Hotel. Shane and Andrew ended up stepping on the Pit Stop mat in first place (for the first time), also winning $5,000 each for after the race.

This dethroned the five-time winners Paul and Steve. In the end, Lucy and Emilia were unable to top their consistent fifth place and were eliminated upon their arrival leaving only four teams in the running.
