Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, survivors are roaming the beach and searching through bags which had washed ashore. Off screen, a man is heard yelling from down the beach, "It looks like another ________!"

Answer: Battery

Batteries were soon to become a rare and valuable asset on the island, from the transmissions on the transceiver to the end-of-the-episode music provided by Hurley's CD player (the batteries of which did run empty later on).
The scene then cuts to the bloody shrapnel embedded in the Marshal, who was rasping at Jack, "She's dangerous!" Notice that the Marshal's injuries are comparable to those which Boone later succumbed to, especially the perforated lung- Jack's reactions do not change much either.
2. The Marshal revealed to Jack a mug shot photo of Kate as a prisoner, which was labeled "_____________ Valley Police".

Answer: Harrison

Kate was ID# 961136.
Hurley met Kate for the first time in this episode, and was alarmed that she was carrying the gun.
The Marshal declined to tell Jack what Kate had done and Jack refused to allow Kate to tell him, saying that they all had a fresh start. (Hence, tabula rasa- a blank slate.)
3. During another survivor argument, Sawyer incorrectly referred to Sayid as "Al-Jazeera". Who replied that AL-Jazeera was, in fact a network?

Answer: Charlie

An example of the start of a long line of nicknames by Sawyer.
(It was, in fact, Charlie who corrected Sawyer's improper remark.)

Among other nicknames in this episode, another for Sayid was "Abdul", along with the infamous "Freckles" for Kate.
Sawyer even referred to Jack as "the hero". And Hurley gave the Marshal the nickname, "Johnny Fever".
4. The words "the others" were spoken by all but whom in this episode?

Answer: Locke

At the campfire, Boone said (about the French transmission they had picked up), "Well, we have to tell the others when we get back." Sayid argued that this could not be done, because then everyone would lose hope- and hope, he said, is a very dangerous thing to lose.
When Kate tells Jack about the French transmission, she says that it said that "the others" were dead. (Though this may have been unintentional on the part of the writers, as the original script read "they're all dead", mirroring the actual translation.)
Sayid tells Jack, after hours of hearing the moaning of the injured Marshal, "I think the others are getting upset. They want to know what's going on inside the tent."
Locke also mentions the word "lost", when telling Michael he felt Michael should return Vincent to Walt.
5. What was the full name of the Australian farmer who took Kate in and eventually turned her in?

Answer: Ray Mullen

Kate arrived under the alias "Annie", and was taken in by a one-handed widowed farmer with a large mortgage bill.
The incident ended with the capture that brought Kate aboard Flight 815 with the Marshal.
Prior to this car crash was the one involving a childhood friend, Tom, in "Born To Run" (episode 22). While Tom died, the fate of Ray was unknown. Kate's record also included bank robbery, revealed in episode 12, "Whatever The Case May Be", in which Kate took Tom's toy plane from box 815.
With all three flashbacks finally able to be pieced together in sequential order, the criminal history of Kate was in stark contrast to her evolved character on the island.
6. When searching for Vincent, Michael sees a boar in the jungle.

Answer: False

Michael ends up searching for Vincent in the jungles after he promises Walt he will find the dog after the rain stops. Notice: Just after Michael promises this, Walt looks away, outward, and the rain completely stops.
It seems his powers were at work long before the fourteenth episode, "Special", in which they were revealed. By the way, Michael hears the growling-which is identified later to be a boar's- but he does not see the creature, and runs away.
7. Did Locke reveal his secret to Walt in this episode?

Answer: No

Charlie and Claire unknowingly encounter Locke's wheelchair and use it to transport their bags. Charlie tells Claire jokingly, "Whoever's this was is probably better off than we are." This was the beginning of a budding relationship between Charlie and Claire. A friendship was also growing between Locke and Walt, much to Michael's chagrin.
Notice Locke's previous analogy between the black and white backgammon pieces, which mirror the black and white stones which would be found in the caves in the fifth episode, "White Rabbit". (Obviously, there is a strong sense of contrast here.) In "Raised By Another", Locke's eyes even take on a black/white appearance. Perhaps this represents his double-sided character.
Walt reveals the secret that Locke told him (in the previous episode, not this one). Walt said a miracle had happened to Locke, to which Michael replies that a miracle happened to them all. (It is now of course known that Locke's miracle had once been bound to the wheelchair.)
8. In this episode, which was not an example of the appearance of the "numbers"?

Answer: The distance Kate had walked from Melbourne

Although "Lost" was believed to be written episode to episode (with even the writers unsure of the final outcome), one constant was certain from the beginning: the numbers.
The "cursed" numbers (which had seemingly played a key role in bringing Flight 815 and Danielle's team to the island, and comprised the original island transmission) had already been appearing in the early episodes, only later to be revealed as 4,8,15,16, 23, 42 in episode 18.
In this episode, "numbers" instances included: In her flashback, Kate claimed to have walked to the farm from the nearest town, which was 15 miles away (not to be confused with Melbourne, which was 100 miles away); Ray's wife had died 8 months ago; Locke blew the dog whistle four times before Vincent appeared; Ray turned in Kate for a reward of $23,000.
Also notice in the previous episode, in Locke's backgammon game, the dice reading number 16. The 16 years of the transmission and the Flight number 815 are also obvious, yet important to keep in mind.
Interesting to note: When Kate (as Annie) was packing to leave the farm, jars of canned pears dating 2003 and 2004 were seen on the background shelves.)
9. The song at the end of the episode was Patsy Cline's "Wash Away".

Answer: False

The song, played on Hurley's CD player, was Joe Purdy's "Wash Away".
The lyrics were fitting to the survivor's situation, trailing on
"I got troubles, oh, but not today, 'cause they're gonna wash away..."
Patsy Cline's song "If You've Got Leavin' On Your Mind" played on the radio as Ray drove Kate from the farm (and to her capture).
10. In her flashback in this episode, Kate was seen sharing her oxygen mask with the injured Marshal on the plane.

Answer: False

Although Kate did in fact share the oxygen mask, this was revealed in an earlier flashback and was not shown in "Tabula Rasa".
One of the interesting aspects of Kate's criminal traits is that her personality also reflects one of empathy. Kate caused the car crash with Ray, and yet she pulled him to safety (and was caught as a result). Even the Marshal was astounded when Kate revealed the favor she was about to ask before the plane crash- it was to be sure Mr. Mullen received his 23 grand to pay his mortgage.
Coincidentally or not, the idea of "one alone" seems to circle Kate in this episode. There was one bullet in the gun; the farmer had one hand; the Marshal said that Kate was "one-of-a-kind".
When Kate told the Marshal that she seemed to have gotten away, thanks to the plane crash. However, the Marshal looked back and replied, "You don't look free to me."
