Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of Leg 5 (in Thailand), Liz and Marie were forced to complete a Speed Bump task.

Answer: True

Commencing the fifth leg of the race on the floating village of Koh Panyi, Thailand, teams were told to make their way by boat to the mainland and then to take a songthaew along the Khlong Song Phraek River to the Ton Pariwat Wildlife Conservation Area. Once there, teams needed to take 'local transportation' (ie. ride on the back of an Asian elephant) through the jungle to receive their next clue. Upon arriving at the Conservation Area, Liz and Marie (who placed last in the previous leg) needed to complete their Speed Bump.

This required that they clean the elephant that they intended to ride.
2. In Leg 5, teams needed to swim for which of the following clay figures during the Road Block?

Answer: Koi fish

Reaching the end of the line with their elephants, teams found a Road Block clue requiring that the selected member follow the sounds of a nearby flute to a pool of water and swim to the bottom to search for a wrapped package. Inside this was a clay koi fish-- their next clue could be found when it was broken open. Andy, Justin, Sandy, Laurence, Marcus, Cindy, Cathi, and Marie ended up finishing this task.

After the Road Block, teams returned to the highway on their elephants and took the songthaews to the spirit house shop in Song Phraek.
3. Which of the following clue types was found in Thailand in Leg 5?

Answer: A second Road Block

Reaching the Thai spirit house in Song Phraek, teams were told to disassemble and transport a spirit house to Wat Chalong, a Buddhist pagoda in Chalong. Once there, teams received a surprise second Road Block in which the member who didn't complete the first one in the leg was required to participate.

This meant that Tommy, Jennifer, Zac, Jeremy, Ernie, Amani, Bill, and Liz needed to reassemble the spirit houses exactly as they had been when they were picked up; for some, this required a trip back to the spirit house shop.

When this was approved, they would receive their next clue and a bag of food.
4. In Leg 5, teams were required to travel by bus to the Thai capital. What city would that be?

Answer: Bangkok

After the second Road Block, teams needed to travel to the Phuket Bus Terminal in order to catch a bus taking them five hundred and fifty miles across Thailand from Phuket to Bangkok, a thirteen hour ride through Southeast Asia. The resulting travel arrangements ended up creating a rather noticeable shift in the dynamic of the leg as many teams arrived early in the morning during rush hour traffic. Arriving in Bangkok, teams needed to go to Bangkok Noi Canal to feed the fish. in the river with the bag of food given to them after the second Road Block.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Thailand in Leg 5?

Answer: Liz and Marie

After feeding the fish, teams were given a clue directing them to the fifth Pit Stop of the race, the M.R. Kukrit Heritage House in Bangkok. Because of varying bus arrival times, the leading teams ended up being Amani and Marcus and Bill and Cathi, both of whom left on a later-departing bus than most. Amani and Marcus won themselves a trip for two to Bali, Indonesia from Travelocity for their victory. Arriving many hours after the other teams and lacking any amount of money whatsoever, Liz and Marie ended up being the fourth team eliminated from the race.
6. In Leg 6, teams flew to which small African nation?

Answer: Malawi

Departing from the race's fifth Pit Stop at the M.R. Kukrit Heritage House in Bangkok, teams were instructed to head to the airport and fly themselves over five thousand miles across the Indian Ocean to the city of Lilongwe, Malawi. This extensive trip taking nearly twenty-four hours would take teams via Singapore and South Africa before landing. Upon their arrival (on the same series of flights), teams needed to take taxis from the airport to the Limbe Tobacco Warehouse outside the city to find their clues outside of Gate 7.
7. Which team member did not complete the tobacco-transporting Road Block task in Leg 6?

Answer: Sandy

Upon arriving at the tobacco warehouse, teams located the Road Block task for this leg of the race in which one member of each team was required to 'put up bale'. In this task, the selected member needed to don a workman's uniform and head into the bustling, yet festive factory where they had to use a small handcart to carry and transport ten 200lb bales of bundled tobacco from one end of the warehouse to a gate on the other side of a busy maze.

When all ten were lined up at the gate, Jeremy, Justin, Ernie, Laurence, Tommy, Bill, and Marcus were able to bring their next clues to their partners and head out.
8. How many teams completed the 'All Sewn Up' Detour task in Leg 6 as opposed to 'Not Grown Up'?

Answer: Three

After the Road Block, teams hopped back into taxis and made their way to Memorial Tower to search the area for the next clue. Here, they located this leg's Detour, a choice between 'All Sewn Up' and 'Not Grown Up'. In 'All Sewn Up', teams took their taxis to the White Horse De-signs Tailor Shop in Lilongwe's old market.

Here, using a pedal-operated sewing machine, they needed to hem one suit jacket and a pair of pants for a customer to wear to get their next clue. Ernie and Cindy, Bill and Cathi, and Amani and Marcus did this.

In 'Not Grown Up', teams went to Lilongwe Lea School and constructed two toy trucks for local schoolchildren based on a provided model. When these were successfully tested, teams could carry on. Jeremy and Sandy, Justin and Jennifer, Andy and Tommy, and Laurence and Zac completed this task.
9. Which of these objects of furniture did teams need to transport during Leg 6 of the race in Africa?

Answer: Beds

After the Detour task, teams needed to return to their taxis in order to find the R-K Furniture Shop in the small, central town of Ntchisi. Once there, they needed to collect two beds from the inventory and hire a truck to transport them to their next destination, the sixth Pit Stop.

This task not only involved organizing transportation, but upon their arrival at their remote destination, but also carrying the bed frames a certain distance to Phil at the Pit Stop mat. Drivers of the transportation also needed to be paid for their services.

The beds brought along were necessary for each racer's stay at the subsequent Pit Stop.
10. Which team won the first place prize at the Pit Stop in Leg 6 (in the African village)?

Answer: Andy and Tommy

Teams took their two beds to the isolated Kumbali Village located in a remote African reserve and checked in with Phil at the Pit Stop to end this sixth leg of the race. Although Justin and Jennifer arrived in first they were unable to check in because they did not pay their transportation; they fell to second place. Likewise, Bill and Cathi fell from third to sixth place for this mishap. Andy and Tommy, thus, became the first place team for this leg of the race, winning for a fourth time and taking with them a trip for two to a private island in the British Virgin Islands for their victory. Amani and Marcus, having trailed the entire leg, arrived in last shortly after the other teams (they were passed by Bill and Cathi in the end) though they were granted the reprieve of a non-elimination leg.
