Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams commenced the race in what U.S. state?

Answer: California

Teams started this twenty-seventh season of the race on Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California in front of a crowd of fans (including a handful of past racers) early in the morning. For their first task, teams needed to take a cab to Mother's Beach on the oceanfront and participate in a bike race. What teams didn't know until their arrival was that they would be riding water bikes across a harbor to Burton Chace Park where Phil would hand them tickets on their flights to Rio de Janeiro. Only one team, the first team (Justin and Diana) would get on the earlier flight. All other teams landed half an hour later.
2. Teams took a helicopter ride around Rio de Janeiro in Leg 1 and had to identify what famous city landmark?

Answer: Christ the Redeemer

Upon landing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, teams needed to hop into cabs at the airport and take a ride to the city's Lagoa Helipad to take a number. These numbers would determine the teams' order of departure on a series of helicopter rides around the city.

When their helicopters landed at their next destination (Urca Hill), they would be quizzes on the sights they'd seen on the ride (the answer was always 'Christ the Redeemer' or 'El Cristo Redentor'). If they could answer correctly, they'd be handed their Detour clue.
3. Which team completed this season's only Fast Forward task during Leg 1?

Answer: None of these

Though teams hit the ground running with their helicopter task at the start of Leg 1, teams could also opt to try for the race's only Fast Forward task this season. For this, the teams needed to head to Clube Sao Conrado where they would be given the opportunity to hangglide over Rio de Janeiro.

After their ride was complete, they'd be handed their next clue and told to head directly to the first Pit Stop. Justin and Diana headed out to try for exactly that, being earlier than the other teams, but they were unable to complete the challenge due to windspeed.

It meant clamouring up from the back of the pack.
4. In the 'Sand' Detour challenge found in Rio de Janeiro in Leg 1, teams were allowed to use their hands for a round of volleyball.

Answer: True

Teams headed down to Copacabana Beach for their Detour and changed into some more appropriate beach attire before selecting either 'Sand' or 'Sidewalk'. In 'Sand', teams had to play a round of foot volleyball with a team of local pros. Fortunately for the teams, they were allowed to use their hands. If they could score 6 points before the pros got 18, they would get their next clue. in 'Sidewalk', teams had to complete a slide puzzle to replicate the Copacabana boardwalk.

When the pieces slid into place, they could carry on. Tanner and Josh, Jazmine and Danielle, Alex and Adam, Ernest and Jin, Logan and Chris, Kelsey and Joey, and Justin and Diana completed 'Sand' while Cindy and Rick, Denise and James Earl, Kelly and Shevonne, and Tiffany and Krista finished 'Sidewalk'.
5. Which team was the first to be eliminated from the race, not able to reach the Pit Stop in Leg 1?

Answer: Kelly and Shevonne

Teams made their way from Copacabana Beach to Arpoador Lookout for their first Pit Stop and while Tanner and Josh placed first in this leg, Kelly and Shevonne spent approximately three hours and forty-five minutes trying to complete their 'Sidewalk' Detour puzzle.

They finished it moments before Phil arrived to eliminate them on the race course. Tanner and Josh, however, won the coveted Express Pass which they were required to use before the end of the fifth leg and then hand off to another team to be used in the proceeding leg (after its initial use).
6. For the second leg of the race, teams flew to what Spanish-speaking South American nation?

Answer: Argentina

Teams left Rio de Janeiro at the start of Leg 2 by heading to a travel agency and booking tickets on a flight to Buenos Aires, the setting of their next string of challenges. Upon landing in Buenos Aires on the same evening, they then had to rush along in cabs to find the church where Pope Francis was baptized, Basílica María Auxiliadora y San Carlos in the capital's core. Since they arrived late enough in the day, all teams had to take numbers (from 1 to 10) in order to determine the order they would get their Detour clues in the morning.
7. In Leg 2, only one team completed the 'Fletero' Detour task. Which team was it?

Answer: Kelsey and Joey

Teams left the Basilica with a Detour task in-hand, and it meant starting their day with a bit of tough labour. In the 'Fletero' Detour task, teams needed to transport a statue across town in a truck, picking it up at a starting location and dropping it off to be displayed in a city park. For this task, one team member needed to keep the statue together in the back of the vehicle while the other needed to navigate their driver to the destination from the cabin. If they displayed it properly (and intact), they would get their next clue. Only Kelsey and Joey finished this task; all other teams chose 'Cartoneros'.
8. In the 'Cartoneros' Detour task in Leg 2, teams had to collect which of these from the city streets?

Answer: Cardboard

In order to celebrate the 'people of cardboard' of Buenos Aires, teams had the opportunity to help the local workforce by suiting up, grabbing a map, and navigating a marked off area of the Argentine capital collecting and recycling used cardboard. Taking a trolley with them on their trek, teams needed to collect one hundred kilograms of cardboard before returning to their foreman. If they could do this they could carry on.

There was a catch with this task in that only eight carts would be available from the get-go, so anyone showing up late would need to wait or swap tasks. Everyone except Kelsey and Joey completed this task.
9. The Road Block found in Leg 2 involved racers learning how to do the tango while wearing which of these?

Answer: A harness

Finishing their Detour, teams had to take cabs to the dance studio known as Bartoleme Mitre where one member of each team needed to 'get sideways'. For this task, the race's first Road Block, participating racers needed to learn the tango while in its birthplace of Buenos Aires. Though team members had to memorize and perform the dance to their instructor's satisfaction, part of the dance needed to be completed while they were harnessed into a line on the ceiling and while they walked sideways up a wall. Diana, Tanner, Logan, Cindy, Kelsey, James Earl, Krista, Jin, Alex, and Jazmine completed this task.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race at the end of Leg 2 (in tenth place)?

Answer: Alex and Adam

Completing the Road Block, teams had to proceed to the race's second Pit Stop at what was considered the Cathedral of Polo, Campo Argentino de Polo in Buenos Aires, where they could find Phil and the mat waiting next to the polo field. There, Justin and Diana managed to keep a lead throughout the leg to win a five-night trip for two to El Jadida, Morocco courtesy of Travelocity.

At the end of the leg, Alex and Adam were overtaken by Jazmine and Danielle leaving the Road Block and they landed on the mat in last place to be eliminated.
