Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 5, teams needed to fly to what Japanese city?

Answer: Tokyo

Departing from outside Rotorua, New Zealand in the beginning of Leg 5 (in the middle of the night), the seven remaining teams were directed to the airport in Auckland where they had to catch flights to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. Once in Tokyo, the teams needed to hop on a train taking them deeper into the city, then locate the expansive Shiba Park where they would find the next clue box. All seven teams arrived in Japan on the same flight leaving New Zealand early in the morning.
2. In Japan in Leg 5, teams needed to locate the headquarters for what famous company to locate a route marker?

Answer: Sony

At Shiba Park, arriving in the evening, teams were told to head to the Ginza section of Tokyo to find the Sony Building (via a flagged rickshaw). Here, teams needed to use a provided Sony HD HandyCam to convince local people to sing a traditional folk song, "Sakura" (and properly at that) in a video. If they could get someone to properly perform the number they would receive their next clue from a Sony employee.

After this task, teams had to go to Shibuya Mark City to find a girl dressed in cosplay.
3. In the 'You Catch It' Detour task in Japan in Leg 5, teams had to catch which of the following?

Answer: Goldfish

Heading along to Shibuya Mark City, teams received their Detour clue for this leg of the race. They could choose either 'You Catch It' or 'You Cart It'. In 'You Catch It', teams ended up using rice paper paddles to transport goldfish from one bowl to another.

This proved difficult when teams discovered their paddles would rapidly disintegrate in water. Teams needed forty goldfish to finish. In 'You Cart It', teams had to bring a yukata, a Japanese garment, from a dry cleaner's to an address in the city to claim their clue. Paula and Natasha, Pamela and Vanessa and Terri, and Henry completed 'You Catch It' while Daichi and Sawaka, Marc and Rovilson, Ann and Diane, and Adrian and Collin all completed 'You Cart It'.
4. What was the answer to teams' ice block puzzle during the Road Block in Leg 5 (in Japan)?

Answer: Fukuoka

After the Detour, teams had to find IceBar Tokyo in the Minato district of the city. Here, one member of each team had to be 'cold and calculated' to solve an ice-block puzzle in the freezing cold. The puzzle consisted of four large ice cubes containing letters or blanks; team members needed to rearrange them to spell their next destination city, Fukuoka, Japan, before they could receive their next clue encased in ice. Sawaka, Rovilson, Ann, Adrian, Paula, Pamela, and Henry finished the task.
5. Which team was first to arrive at the mid-way point of the double-length fifth leg?

Answer: Diane and Ann

After the Road Block, teams had to go to the Shinagawa Train Station in Tokyo and catch a high-speed rail train to the city of Fukuoka, Japan. This equalized all seven teams who then had to race to the International Congress Center to find the next Pit Stop.

Although Ann and Diane arrived in first place, the frantic racing through this coastal city was for very little; all of the teams were told that this mat was only the midway point of a double-length fifth leg of the race. As such, although Pamela and Vanessa placed last on this mat, they did not get eliminated nor did they take a penalty.
6. In the second half of Leg 5, teams traveled by ferry to what South Korean city?

Answer: Busan

Continuing immediately into the second half of the fifth leg, teams were told to make their way to the Hakata Port International Ferry Terminal in Fukukoa where they would need to catch the next available ferry, three hundred twenty miles to the city of Busan, South Korea. Once there, they would find the next clue box waiting outside the ferry terminal. Because of the previous train ride and the ferry trip, all seven teams were on an even playing field arriving in their new destination.

In Busan, teams had to travel by taxi to the Jongro Taekwondo Academy.
7. Which team attempted to use the Yield in the second half of Leg 5 (in South Korea)?

Answer: Terri and Henry

At the Jongro Taekwondo Academy, teams needed to wear taekwondo outfits and kick through three wooden boards to receive their next clue. When this was done, they could proceed to their next destination, the Jagalchi Market. Here, all of the teams encountered the first Yield of the race. Terri and Henry were the ones to put up another team, but they placed Marc and Rovilson, their strongest competition, on the board.

Unfortunately, this team had already passed so it was rendered ineffective.
8. During the 'Slither' Detour task in the second half of Leg 5 (in South Korea), teams needed to deal with which slimy creatures?

Answer: Octopus

At Jagalchi Market, teams had to find a golden pig to locate their Detour (next to the Yield). For this task, teams had to choose either 'Slither' or 'Deliver'. In 'Slither', teams had to find the Jagalchi Fish Market and stick their hands into large fish tanks full of octopuses to find one coin each.

In 'Deliver', teams had to deliver food from a local restaurant to three different addresses in the vicinity while doing so with the food on their heads. All seven teams chose 'Slither'.
9. Who did not complete the South Korean Road Block task involving keys and locks in Leg 5 (the second half)?

Answer: Henry

After the Detour task, teams had to travel by taxi to Busan's Nurimaru APEC House on the shores of Hyundai Beach where their clue box would be waiting outside. This was the Road Block task in Busan. One member of each team needed to be selected with the guideline that 'the one with patience' be chosen. Marc, Collin, Vanessa, Paula, Terri, Ann, and Daichi were picked. For this task, the selected member had to collect a key from a guard at Yongdusan Park and use it to unlock only one of several padlocks on a park gate.

When they did this without breaking the key they were given (or else try all over again) they could continue on.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 5?

Answer: Daichi and Sawaka

After the Road Block, teams traveled by taxi to the Beomoesa Temple in Busan, South Korea where, once again, Marc and Rovilson checked in in first place, partially due to an amazing amount of luck during the Road Block task in which Marc got the padlock correct on his first try.

Not counting the leg 5 midpoint, this marked their fourth consecutive victory. In the end, it was Daichi and Sawaka, whose decision to attempt and back out of the 'Deliver' Detour cost them, who were eliminated from the race in seventh place.
