Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In keeping with Steph's flirtatious nature, her choice of subject was very fitting, given its romantic associations. What modern foreign language was it that she taught during her time at Waterloo Road?

Answer: French

Denise Welch, the actress who played Steph Haydock, was part of the "Waterloo Road" cast from the show's very first episode. Steph, the flirtatious French teacher, quickly became a hit with viewers, despite her less than impressive classroom management and decidedly dodgy subject knowledge. Yet for all her failings in the classroom, Steph proved to have a sixth sense when it came to the emotional well-being of her pupils, and came to the rescue of numerous students during her time at "Waterloo Road".
2. During her time at the school Steph held a variety of different titles, though none was more important to her than that of foster mum, which she took very seriously. What was the name of her foster daughter, a former drug addict who tragically went on to be murdered by her teenage boyfriend?

Answer: Maxine Barlow

Maxine Barlow, played by Ellie Paskell, first appeared on "Waterloo Road" at the beginning of series 2, as the girlfriend of Lewis Seddon, a pupil who had previously been expelled from the school. At the tender age of fifteen, Maxine had been reduced to a homeless drug addict who, in desperation, tried to rob a drunken Steph Haydock in the street.

However her plan backfired when she collapsed, leaving her at the mercy of her old French teacher. Luckily for Maxine, Steph took pity on her, and after helping her to get back on her feet, she eventually became her foster mum. Sadly for Steph and Maxine their time together was short-lived, as Maxine was murdered in series 4, at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Earl Kelly.
3. Which member of staff did Steph have a crush on, as well as several one night stands?

Answer: Jack Rimmer

Throughout the first three series of "Waterloo Road", Steph had several nights of passion with then headmaster Jack Rimmer, played Jason Merrells. However, while Steph genuinely seemed to have feelings for Jack, he simply saw their union as a bit of fun with no strings attached.

As a result, Steph was forever waiting in the wings for Jack to wake up and see her, which unfortunately for her never happened. Therefore when Jack resigned in series 3, it was a blessing in disguise for Steph, who, with Jack out of the picture, finally had the time and space to get over him and move on.
4. Steph proved to be a loyal friend to her co-workers, and once even went so far as to break the law for one of them. With this in mind, whose illegally adopted baby did she help hide from immigration, who intended to send it back to its family in Rwanda?

Answer: Kim Campbell

When art teacher Kim Campbell, played by Angela Griffin, returned to "Waterloo Road" after a stint teaching in Rwanda, she had a baby girl with her. Initially, it was assumed that baby Grace was Kim's own child, but when the girl's uncle tried unsuccessfully to blackmail Kim, it was revealed that she was not in fact Kim's own child. On the contrary, as Kim later told Steph, baby Grace had been smuggled out of Rwanda by Kim herself, after the baby's mother begged her to take Grace and give her a better life in the UK. Of course immigration didn't see things the same way and were soon tailing Kim in an attempt to catch her red-handed with baby Grace.

When Steph found out, without the slightest hesitation she took Grace to her own house, staying home with her until immigration gave up and left Kim alone.

However, sadly for Kim and baby Grace, immigration did eventually catch up with them, and Grace was then sent back to Rwanda, to live with her biological family.
5. During her time on the show, Steph's love life provided plenty of comedy and light entertainment. One of these moments involved which cantankerous English teacher, whom Steph pretended to be dating in order to put a stop to the advances of a school security guard?

Answer: Grantly Budgen

Despite Grantly Budgen being a cynical and cantankerous old boot, he and Steph Haydock were actually good friends. During the show's early days, Steph and Grantly, played by Philip Martin Brown, could regularly be found drowning their sorrows in the local pub or putting the world to rights in the school staffroom. Though their friendship never developed into anything romantic, during series 4 Steph used Grantly as a 'fake' boyfriend, which had devastating consequences for his marriage to his wife, Fleur. Even when Steph revealed the truth to both Fleur and the security guard, they refused to believe her.

Moreover Grantly was even kicked out of his house by his wife, much to Steph's chagrin, as she was then forced to take him in herself. After weeks of having Grantly under her roof, Steph, who was at the end of her tether, set about trying to bring him and Fleur back together. Steph's plan finally succeeded during a speed dating night, which served to remind the pair that they were the only ones willing to put up with each other.
6. During her time as Head of Pastoral Care, Steph had to deal with all sorts of difficult situations, including protecting the privacy of an HIV positive student. Why did having to do this affect her friendship with Matt Wilding, one of "Waterloo Road's" music and drama teachers?

Answer: Matt tended to a cut on the pupil's head, unknowingly putting himself at risk

During series 3, Matt Wilding cut his hand while tending to an injured pupil named Ben McNulty. Flabbergasted by the boy's reluctance to be bandaged by him, as well as Steph's reaction to the injury, Matt later discovered that the reason for this was Ben's HIV positive status. Fuming at Steph's failure to disclose this earlier, Matt found himself having to take strong antiviral medication in an attempt to stop himself from becoming infected.

In the meantime, the usually easy-going Steph stuck to her guns, insisting that she did the right thing protecting Ben's privacy.
7. While Steph had some success as Head of Pastoral Care, she also had some catastrophic failures. In fact, on her very first day in the position, she forgot to give new pupil Karla Bentham her medication, which resulted in one member of staff being hit in the face with a chair. What disorder was Karla born with, which had a hand in causing her to lash out during stressful situations?

Answer: Asperger's syndrome

Poor Karla's first day at Waterloo Road did not go well, and Steph had more than a hand in this. Clearly unfamiliar with Asperger's syndrome, Steph repeatedly caused Karla to feel stressed, which was made all the worse by her insistence that Karla was a problem pupil.

Therefore by the time Karla reached Mr Budgen's English class, she was completely overwhelmed, so much so that the lesson ended with Grantly Budgen being hit in the face with a chair. However when this was brought to the attention of then headmaster Jack Rimmer, it was revealed that Steph had not given Karla her medication.

This landed Steph in considerable hot water, as the medication would have helped to calm Karla and may well have helped to avoid the scene with Grantly Budgen.
8. During series 4 of "Waterloo Road", Steph was accused of picking on schoolgirl Tasha Lefton, whom she believed had been behaving very strangely. Choosing to follow her instincts, Steph continued to keep an eye on Tasha and eventually worked out that the girl had which potentially dangerous medical condition?

Answer: Diabetes

To the majority of pupils and teachers, Tasha Lefton was an attractive and intelligent schoolgirl who had everything she ever could have wanted. However Steph Haydock could see that things weren't quite right with the teenager, who had become moody and disruptive.

Moreover she also seemed to be extremely short-sighted, which prompted Steph to urge her to see an optician. However when Tasha collapsed in school, it soon became clear that she had more to worry about than simple short-sightedness. A quick-thinking Steph soon put two and two together, realising that not only was Tasha diabetic, but she was also purposefully avoiding taking insulin in order to stay thin.

Moreover it was Steph who saved the day, by ensuring that the school nurse knew to administer an insulin injection.
9. Ever a friend to the needy, during series 5 Steph opened up her home to Ruby Fry after she separated from her husband, John. Steph also did everything she could to help Ruby overcome her addiction to which particular drug?

Answer: Diazepam

When the life of Ruby Fry, "Waterloo Road's" Head of Food Technology, started to fall to pieces, it was her good friend Steph Haydock who tried to help her. Welcoming Ruby into her home, Steph listened to her friend's woes and did everything to try and make her feel better.

However Ruby's addiction to diazepam quickly began to spiral out of control and her behaviour began to border on the bizarre, leaving Steph with no option but to ask Ruby to leave. Yet she did continue to try and support her friend, despite being unable to live under the same roof as her.

Indeed while most of the school's staff had taken to giving Ruby a wide berth, Steph stayed loyal to her throughout her addiction.
10. Having always previously been unlucky in love, during series 5 it seemed that Steph's luck had finally begun to change when she met businessman Oliver Mead. However though love did eventually blossom between the two, it was temporarily thwarted by Oliver's adult son, who also taught at Waterloo Road. What subject was it that he taught?

Answer: Science

Steph met Oliver during a minor fender bender and from that moment on it was clear that their relationship was something special. Needless to say when he then turned up at the school to see his son, Deputy Head and Science teacher Christopher Mead, things went pear-shaped for the couple, due to Christopher's inability to accept Steph as his father's partner. Things eventually got so bad that poor Steph broke up with Oliver, mistakenly believing that she could never fit into his world.

Some weeks later the pair were eventually reunited and reconciled at the school's Prom, after Ruby Fry called upon Oliver to help them out of a tight spot.
