Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Initially, thirteen housemates entered the 'Big Brother' house on launch night. After they were safely inside, another housemate was selected by ballot to join them. He/she had the disadvantage of having to wear an 'animal' costume for 24 hours a day at first. Which housemate was this, and what animal did he/she portray?

Answer: Mario - mole

The launch night on 9 June was a little different from previous years. Instead of contestants knowing in advance that they would be entering the 'Big Brother' house, 81 hopefuls were gathered outside near the main crowd, thirteen of whom then had their names called out to enter the house.

After Josie, Steve, Ben, Rachael, Nathan, Dave, Caoimhe, Govan, Shabby, Ife, John James, Sunshine and Corin had been whisked inside to rapturous applause, presenter Davina McCall announced that a fourteenth housemate, to be chosen from the remaining hopefuls by ballot, would join them.

This turned out to be 28-year-old Mario Mugan, from Essex. In addition to dressing in a 'mole' costume for the first four days, Mario had to sleep on his own in a 'mole hole' in the garden until being relieved of his costume and joining the house proper.
2. The 'Tree of Temptation', which had been introduced in 'Celebrity Big Brother' earlier in 2010, was back for the regular show, albeit in a somewhat altered form. How did the Tree appear this time?

Answer: chest of drawers in the bathroom

The 'Tree of Temptation', last seen spreading its lofty branches high over the garden, was very disgruntled at having been chopped down and turned into a chest of drawers, and remained in a grumpy mood throughout the series.

The Tree first made its existence known to Mario on Day 1, ordering him to complete a task in his guise of house 'mole', which included hiding housemates' cigarettes and sabotaging party food. Several more secret missions took place over the series at the behest of the Tree, the majority of which were passed with flying colours.
3. Rachael had the dubious honour of being the first housemate to be evicted from the 'Big Brother' house on Day 10. Rachael, from Nottingham, worked mainly as a hair stylist; however, she had another, arguably more glamorous, job as a professional impersonator. Which well-known celebrity did Rachael resemble, and therefore impersonate?

Answer: Beyoncé

It was rather hard luck on Rachael to be the first evictee. Dave and Shabby, along with medical student Sunshine, had actually been the housemates with the most nominations, but Dave had won the newly-introduced 'Save and Replace' task and chosen Rachael to face the public vote instead of himself. Rachael did, however, re-enter the house briefly during a task towards the end of the show.

Corin was the housemate who described herself as a 'Jordan lookalike', claiming to have been mistaken for Katie Price on several occasions.

Ironically, there was another housemate called Rachel (without the second 'a'), flight attendant Rachel Ifon, but as she did not enter the house until Day 31, she and Beyoncé lookalike Rachael White were not there at the same time.
4. As the show progressed and some people left or were evicted, more housemates entered the house. In total, how many different housemates were there? (Remember, this does not include the 'Ultimate Big Brother' contestants.)

Answer: 21

As the series unfolded the original 14 housemates were joined by seven more, making a total of 21 overall.

On Day 31 Andrew, Keeley and Rachel Ifon entered. On Day 45 Jo, JJ and Laura were voted in by the housemates from a possible six contenders. The last housemate to enter the house was the unforgettable Sam Pepper, who joined the following week during the live show, immediately after the eviction of Ben Duncan. 21-year-old graffiti artist Sam, from Folkestone, Kent, certainly livened up proceedings in the house by managing to fall out with almost everyone in his first few days. By the beginning of the last week only Sam, Andrew and JJ were still in the house out of the seven late arrivals.
5. Over the series, four housemates left without being evicted in the usual way. Who was the first to walk out?

Answer: Shabby

Actress Shabby, from London, had been the first housemate to walk from the house of her own accord on Day 27. Dublin student Caoimhe Guilfoyle (pronounced 'Keeva' and referred to perhaps unfairly in some of the tabloid press as 'Keeva the Diva') became the second to leave voluntarily on Day 42. Laura, who had arrived with Jo and JJ, only stayed for five days before she, too, decided life in the house was not for her.

Unfortunately, Keeley was not long in the house either. She fractured her ankle during a task and required an operation, so was unable to remain. Ife and Sunshine did not walk out, they were evicted in the normal way.
6. On Day 31 three new housemates joined the house. 'Big Brother' had laid on a very unusual means of transport for them to enter the 'Big Brother' compound, via the garden. What was this?

Answer: spaceship

Following the eviction of Nathan, Davina announced that three more housemates were to enter the house. Sure enough, the blinds went up and housemates were astonished to see a huge 'spaceship' being lowered into the garden. Andrew, Keeley and Rachel Ifon stepped forth, dressed in spacesuits, and joined their new housemates.
7. Who was the youngest housemate on 'Big Brother' 11?

Answer: Andrew

Oxford maths student Andrew Edmonds, from Dorset, was the youngest housemate at 19. Andrew was popular with his fellow housemates and was very rarely nominated for eviction. He was popular with the public too, making it through to the final.

The two oldest housemates were both aged 41. Former soldier and father-of-eight Steve, from Leicester, actually celebrated his 41st birthday in the house. Steve walks on artificial legs as he was seriously injured in a bomb blast whilst serving with the Army in Belfast, losing both legs and an eye. He is a successful wheelchair basketball competitor and has taken part in a transatlantic yacht race. Steve remained in the house until included in the quadruple eviction four days before the final.

Also aged 41 was make-up artist and trainee DJ Jo, from Luton. She did not join the house until Day 45, and was in the house for just three weeks before being evicted. At times Jo had been tearful in the house, and had confided that she was unhappy there. Despite considering leaving, however, Jo gamely stayed in the house until she was evicted.
8. What was the occupation of housemate Dave?

Answer: minister

Dave Vaughan, 39, is a Christian minister and father-of-four from Pontypool, South Wales. A former postman, he was the sixth of the original housemates to enter the house, and did so dressed as a monk. Because of his religious beliefs Dave was allowed limited access to his Bible each day. Dave kept his place in the house until the final.
9. Which English city did Josie come from?

Answer: Bristol

25-year-old Bristolian Josie Gibson was the first housemate to enter the house. She grew close to Australian John James Parton in the house and - apart from some legendary arguments - they spent most of their time kissing and cuddling together, eventually declaring their love for one another.

Josie was very popular among her housemates, so much so that when Davina announced that the show would finish earlier than housemates expected, to be followed immediately by 'Ultimate Big Brother' for the remaining two weeks, and asked them to choose which housemate should have automatic entry into the final, the housemates chose her.
10. Which two housemates won the 'pantomime horse' task against their fellow housemates in Week 9 and were rewarded by a trip to Sandown Park Race Course for the Pantomime Horse Championships?

Answer: John James and JJ

Ben and Ife did not participate in this task as they had been evicted prior to it taking place. The other choices were all actual pairings and the in-house competition was won by John James and 23-year-old professional boxer Joe-John 'JJ' Bird. On their visit to Sandown Park, where they were driven in great secrecy, they came fourth in the race; however, one of the other pairs was a pantomime cow, not a horse, and was eliminated. John James and JJ were therefore elevated to third place, winning £300 for the coming week's shopping budget.

John James was evicted in the quadruple eviction on Day 73, leaving JJ to claim his place in the final alongside Andrew, Dave and Josie. Mario was the fifth finalist selected, to complete the line-up.
11. 'Big Brother' 11 had a carnival theme, going so far as having a carousel in the garden complete with prancing horses for the housemates to sit on while chatting or smoking. It also featured a 'fortune-telling' machine, the name of which was an anagram of the words 'Big Brother'. What was its name?

Answer: Bob Righter

'Bob Righter' occasionally flashed his eyes, made a whirring noise and spewed out a message for the hapless housemates. He first made his presence known just after Rachael's eviction, by predicting that Corin would have a happy day the following day. Josie also received a good day the following week, courtesy of second evictee Govan, but Ben was given a 'bad day' in Week 3 for failing a task set by the Tree of Temptation.

Apart from a brief appearance on Day 38 when Bob Righter, in alliance with house 'parrot' Davina McCaw, gave each housemate a treat when they identified who was responsible for various phrases spoken during their stay in the house, not much was heard from him for a while. He did, however, leap into action quite literally one night, and on Day 70 the housemates were shown a video of 'Bob' apparently coming to life and creeping round the house as they slept. They were then told that their shopping task for that week would depend on them not being predictable, as Bob made fifteen predictions based on what he thought they would do, coming into the garden to leave messages for the housemates during the course of the next day.
12. What unusual circumstances caused the housemates to be evacuated from the house on Day 70?

Answer: severe flooding

There was a very heavy downpour that evening, which leaked through the roof and flooded the house. Staff moved the housemates out while the damage was put right, and after a long wait in another area of the compound a makeshift bedroom was created for them in the task room. For that night and the following day the housemates only had limited access to the house although they could still use the garden. The 'Nest' was used as a makeshift Diary Room.

Investigation later revealed that the housemates were largely to blame for the rain getting into the house, as they had been throwing balls of socks onto the roof, which had blocked the gutters.
13. On Day 73, Davina presided over the last eviction before the final. How many housemates were evicted?

Answer: 4

The quadruple eviction on the last Friday of the show was the biggest ever number of evictions in a single night over any series of UK 'Big Brother' to date. First out was Steve, who came out to the biggest applause of any housemate in the series up till then. In his interview with Davina he said the most difficult part for him had been missing his wife and children. Corin was the second housemate to be evicted that night. She had been one of the most cheerful housemates and had always been supportive of other housemates if they felt low.

Sam was next to be evicted. In his interview with Davina he admitted that he had perhaps been voted out because some of his pranks had got a bit out of hand. John James was the last housemate to be voted out. Josie was terribly upset when his name was called. John James said to Davina that his feelings for Josie had been genuine and everyone would see that was true when they were reunited after she too came out of the house.
14. On the last Sunday of the show the remaining finalists were treated to a luxurious day of treats and pampering. Which former UK 'Celebrity Big Brother' contestant got their day off to a good start by bringing them breakfast in bed?

Answer: Anthea Turner

All these personalities have appeared on 'Celebrity Big Brother' over the years. Former 'Blue Peter' presenter Anthea Turner was in the first of the 'Celebrity' shows in 2001, where Jack Dee had emerged as the eventual winner.

Anthea woke the housemates on Day 75 with a light breakfast and the news that they were to have a day of treats because Andrew had passed a secret task the previous day. Andrew's task had involved him answering 'yes' to every question the housemates had asked him, often with hilarious results, as one by one the housemates were let in on the secret, unbeknown to him. They went on to enjoy the comforts of beauty treatments including hair styling, spray tanning and manicures, and were all given new clothes. Housemates rounded off the evening by enjoying a dinner prepared for them by top chef Nancy Lam and music by Simon Webbe.
15. 'Day 77, 9.20 p.m. And the winner of 'Big Brother' 2010 is...' Which of the five finalists - Andrew, Dave, JJ, Josie or Mario - was the winner? Go on, it's your turn now. You tell me...

Answer: Josie

Andrew was the first housemate to leave the house to have his interview with Davina, closely followed by JJ. Tension mounted in the house as Dave, Josie and Mario wondered who would be voted out next, but eventually Davina called Mario to exit in third place, leaving Dave and Josie nervously awaiting their fate.

The wait for them must have seemed endless, but eventually Davina announced that Josie was the winner. Runner-up Dave left the house first, for his interview, then a little later Josie emerged to rapturous applause from the crowd and the traditional fireworks and celebrations.

Josie's celebrations could not last long, however. Immediately after being crowned winner, she was back in the house to take part in 'Ultimate Big Brother', a two-week extravaganza for famous faces from previous UK 'Big Brother' and 'Celebrity Big Brother' series to become housemates once more and compete for the title of 'Ultimate Big Brother'.

In August 2009 broadcaster Channel 4 announced that 'Big Brother 2010' would be the last 'Big Brother' as it had made the decision to discontinue with the franchise. There are of course rumours about what may or may not happen next... I for one hope we will see more of 'Big Brother' in the future, even if it is in a different format. Love it or loathe it, it certainly brought a new dimension to television and many people feel it deserves its place in television history.
