Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To whom did Josh make a religious comment on a TV show for which he later had to apologise?

Answer: Mary Marsh

Josh made a controversial remark to Mary Marsh, which offended the Christian fundamentalists. It was thought that he might lose his job because of it, but the President rounded on the fundamentalists and told them to get out of the White House. All he said to Josh was 'Don't do it again.'
2. Who was chosen as the President's personal physician?

Answer: Morris Tolliver

Tolliver was an African-American Navy Officer who was standing in for the President's personal physician. The President forged a friendship with him and asked him to take over as his physician. Tolliver was killed when his plane was shot down and Bartlet initially overreacted because of his friendship with the doctor. He demanded a severe military attack in retaliation but was finally persuaded that a proportional reponse was more appropriate.
3. What was the name of the basketball player that the President brought in as a substitute?

Answer: Rodney Grant

The President and his staff were playing basketball, and when Bartlet was getting tired, he called for a substitute from the 'President's Council on Physical Fitness.' This was the very tall Rodney Grant, and the staff were nonplussed to find out that he had played for a Final Four college team. Toby's comment to Bartlet was 'It isn't so much that you cheat; it's how brazenly bad you are at it.'
4. Who was the Congressman who had taken over his late wife's seat in Congress?

Answer: Joe Willis

"Mr Willis of Ohio" was the title of the sixth episode. Joe Willis, a Social Studies teacher, had taken over his wife's seat when she had died the previous month. In a discussion about the Appropriations Bill, Joe carefully considered the arguments about using sampling in the census and finally decided to vote against the amendment which had been introduced by Congress.
5. A State Dinner was held in honour of which Far Eastern Head of State?

Answer: President of Indonesia

The President of Indonesia was extremely terse and President Bartlet struggled to make conversation with him throughout the photo-calls. In the end Bartlet commented to his staff that the Indonesian President was either boring or rude.
6. Who was the first choice for the Supreme Court nomination?

Answer: Peyton Harrison

Peyton Harrison was the President's first choice to fill the seat of the retiring Justice Crouch. However, it was then discovered that Harrison was the author of an article in which he declared that the government was entitled to invade the privacy of an individual unless specifically prevented by a provision in the Constitution.

When Harrison was invited to meet the President, he restated his case. As a result, the President changed his mind and decided to nominate Mendoza for the seat on the Supreme Court bench.
7. Toby arranged a funeral for a homeless Korean War veteran. What was the name of the veteran's brother?

Answer: George

Toby was contacted by the police about a homeless man found dead on the streets who was wearing a coat that Toby had once donated to charity. He then found out more about the man, Walter Hufnagle, a Korean war veteran who had been awarded the Purple Heart, and tracked down Walter's brother George who was also homeless. Toby then arranged for a military funeral for the veteran at Arlington National Cemetery.
8. Who had to remain in the White House during the State of the Union Speech?

Answer: Secretary of Agriculture

Josh explained to Donna that 'Someone from the line of succession is required to be absent from the State of the Union', and that he had chosen Roger Tribby, Secretary of Agriculture. Roger met with the President in the Oval Office just as the President was about the leave for the Capitol. Bartlet gave him some brief instructions about what he should do if anything should happen and Tribby gave the President a gift of the Constitution translated into Latin.
9. Who was the White House worker who gave Leo McGarry's personnel file to Congressman Lillienfield?

Answer: Karen Larsen

Karen Larsen, who worked in Personnel, was dismissed by Sam after admitting that she was responsible for handing over the file. She then met with Leo and told him that her father had been an alcoholic. He talked to her about his alcoholism, and then decided to reinstate her and give her another chance.
10. What was the name of the film producer who hosted a fundraiser in Los Angeles?

Answer: Theodore Marcus

President Bartlet and several of his staff flew to Los Angeles for a whirlwind visit that culminated in a star-studded fundraiser hosted by wealthy film producer Theodore (Ted) Marcus. Marcus threatened to cancel the party unless Bartlet announced his opposition to a congressional bill banning gays in the military. Both Josh and Bartlet told Marcus that the bill would not pass, and so the party went ahead.
