Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As he dressed to leave town, Dr. Pollidori and his wife Elizabeth had an argument about their future. She wanted kids and he wanted bigger and better things. He ultimately posed the question, "What do you want: a baby or a ____ ____?"

Answer: Nobel Prize

Though like his small-town neighbors, Pollidori seemed entranced by the idea of being on "The Jerry Springer Show", he saw his scientific work as a means of getting out of the small town and into a more exciting world. His wife wanted a baby, though, and it was creating a rift between them.
2. What was the headline on the paper Scully bought outside JJ's Country Diner?

Answer: FBI Hunts Hometown Monster

The subtitle was "Agent Admits Stories: 'Believed to be True'". Scully realized that the line was lifted from an argument Mulder had made when they had first seen the Great Mutato out by the woods; that regardless of how ridiculous unverified rumors may be, they are "unverifiable, and therefore true in the sense that they're believed to be true."
3. What did Mulder order in JJ's Country Diner?

Answer: coffee

The waitress set down a veritable feast in front of him, announcing "Biscuits, fritters, grits, flapjacks, eggs boiled, scrambled, poached, and fried. We got some monster grapefruits on the way. Bigger than your head, almost." After all that, though, Mulder just wanted coffee, which was provided on the house.
4. On what occasion had Izzy gotten his tape recorder?

Answer: Christmas

Mulder asked Izzy if he owned a tape recorder, and when he started to hem and haw, Shaineh screeched out, "Christmas nineteen ninety THREE!" Izzy got the recorder for the agents and, sure enough, their entire conversation from the earlier night was recorded there.

After that, though, were the Cher song and the Great Mutato's noises, so Mulder whisked the tape off to get it analyzed by the FBI.
5. As Scully and Mulder stood in Shaineh's front yard discussing the case, what were the neighbors doing?

Answer: raking leaves

The neighbors on each side of Shaineh's house were slowly raking leaves, but it was quite clear that they were more interested in listening in on the agents' conversation. The entire town was obviously thrilled that they'd achieved a bit of fame, even if for such an unsightly underbelly!
6. Did Scully and Mulder get Elizabeth Pollidori out of her house before the Great Mutato could get to her?

Answer: no

Mulder noticed the house covered in the fumigation wrap and figured that was why no one had noticed when Shaineh had been enveloped by a white fog and gone missing for three days. The agents went into the house and made their way up to the bedroom, but were themselves overcome by the smoke and collapsed on the floor of Elizabeth's bedroom. Days later, Pollidori returned home and Scully and Mulder were discovered.

As Elizabeth described her ordeal with the Great Mutato, Scully read a newspaper with the headline, "FBI Agents Whereabouts Unknown".
7. Who killed the Old Man?

Answer: Dr. Pollidori

After listening to his wife's account, Pollidori realized that his creation was still alive. He went to the Old Man's house and strangled him. The Great Mutato found him later, dead on the kitchen floor, and buried him out in the barn.
8. The second time Mulder went to JJ's Country Diner, what did JJ do to his eggs?

Answer: spit in them

Mulder walked in, immediately able to sense a shift in the town's disposition. One of the diners tried to trip Mulder on his way to a seat. Another diner used his spoon to fling some grits at the back of Mulder's neck. JJ held up the plate with the barely cooked egg, spit loudly into it, and passed it off to the waitress, who brought it to Mulder.

She then offered him coffee, which she proceeded to pour in his lap. Mulder jumped up, telling her "That's not a place you want to burn a guy." Then Mulder picked up a paper and noticed the new headline: "FBI Agents Say Monster A 'Hoax'".
9. After intercepting a package, who did the postal worker "unmask" as the monster?

Answer: Izzy

The postal worker dragged Izzy out of the post office, wearing a terrible rubber two-faced mask on his head. The man had opened the package and concluded that Izzy was the monster. Shaineh pushed up through the crowd and challenged the man, "How would you like your face to intercept my fist, coconut head?"
10. What did Scully say the tablets' intended use was?

Answer: anesthetizing herds of animals

Mulder, watching Izzy blowing air against the glass window of the post office, was ready to concede that the boy was at the center of the hoax. Scully had some different information, though, and told Mulder that the "residue in the frying pan was an agricultural product used to anesthetize herds of animals" and was only used by farmers who had to "register with the FDA even to have it in their possession."
