Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Without cheating, which two items can never be in your inventory at the same time?

Answer: Nail and Gauntlet

The Nail can only be obtained in the short path, using Beauty's slave clothes to enter the castle. The Gauntlet can only be obtained in the long path, in which Beauty's slave clothes must be destroyed on the Isle of the Mists. This is necessary in order to progress to the Realm of the Dead, where the Gauntlet is found.

You can climb The Cliffs of Logic as soon as you land on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain. Both the Mint and the Tinder Box can be in your inventory at this time, and only the Tinder Box is required in order to obtain the Peppermint Leaf.

In a typical play-through, Alexander trades his Ring for the Magic Map, then later trades the Pearl for his Ring. But you can also trade back the Magic Map to obtain the Pearl again, which would allow you to have both the Ring and the Pearl at the same time.

Though you do use the Brick to advance through the Catacombs where the Skull is found, the Skull can be obtained in a previous room before the Brick is necessary to use.
2. Including his original "human" form, how many different forms does Shamir appear as in the game?

Answer: Ten

The following are all the instances where Shamir appears in the game:

(1) Shamir's original form
(2) Swimming Boy on the ferry docks
(3) Snake on the branch in Sing-Sing's tree
(4) The Cloaked Old Man in the Book Shop/Pawn Shop
(5) The Gardening Man on the Isle of the Beast
(6) The Weasel in Beast's Garden
(7) Imposter Lady Celeste in the Catacombs
(8) The Crow on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain
(9) The Old Woman on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain
(10) Imposter Princess Cassima at the wedding
3. According to the Beast, who is responsible for stealing his Coat of Arms?

Answer: The Druids

The Beast accuses the Druids when Alexander first meets him in Beast's Garden: "You are the first to break through the barriers in lo these many years - that is, except for the Druids who stole my heirloom coat of arms!"
4. Between the inscription written on the Gauntlet and Alexander's reciting of the inscription to the Lord of the Dead, there is one small difference. What is it?

Answer: The word "Flesh" is replaced with the word "Man"

The Gauntlet inscription and Alexander's spoken challenge to the Lord of the Dead are identical except for this one change. Both times the word "Flesh" is mentioned on the inscription, Alexander actually says "Man" in both of these spots.
5. How many islands contain an animal skull with a blue jewel hanging from it?

Answer: Two

The Minotaur's Lair within the Catacombs on the Isle of the Sacred Mountain contains a large animal skull with a dangling blue jewel on the Minotaur's sacrificial altar. Another such skull and jewel can be found in the Druids' village on the Isle of the Mists, on the screen where you obtain the coal and the scythe - this particular skull displays both a blue and a red jewel on either side. Coincidentally, the Druids also carry out sacrifices of their own...
6. The "Charming a Creature of the Night" spell calls for a strand of hair from a maiden of pure heart. From how many maidens can this strand of hair be obtained?

Answer: Two

There are two different ways to obtain the Strand of Hair for the spell.

The first way is to obtain it through Cassima's hair ribbon. After obtaining the hair ribbon by giving Alexander's Ring to Sing-Sing, clicking the Hand Icon on it will result in the strand of hair being added to your inventory.

The second way is to obtain it through Beauty's slave clothes. After obtaining the slave clothes by freeing the Beast of his enchantment, clicking the Hand Icon on it will result in the strand of hair being added to your inventory.

Note that if you have already obtained one strand of hair, you cannot obtain the other.
7. Alexander's audience with Vizier Alhazred is optional in "King's Quest VI", though you do obtain points and receive important clues to complete the game by viewing this cutscene. By skipping this cutscene entirely, which of these interactions will be different later on in the game?

Answer: Saladin does not know Alexander's name in the Grand Hall right before the wedding

Saladin's dialogue in this scene towards Alexander is different depending on whether or not Alexander received an audience with the vizier earlier in the game.

Saladin's dialogue in the castle if Alexander HAS received an audience: "Prince Alexander? Here? The vizier will have my head for allowing you within a mile of the royal wedding! Since you are of noble birth, I will give you five seconds to explain your presence here before killing you. I warn you; it had better be good!"

Saladin's dialogue in the castle if Alexander HAS NOT received an audience: "You must be the foreigner the vizier warned me about. I've standing orders to kill you on sight. I'll give you five seconds to explain what you're doing here. I warn you; it had better be good!"
8. During the short path, there is an opportunity to access your inventory after "Cassima" orders Saladin to kill Alexander. What happens when Alexander shows the replica genie's lamp to Alhazred during this time?

Answer: Alhazred is fooled but "Cassima" assures him that it is a fake, and Saladin proceeds to kill Alexander

Though this may provide a clue on how to approach the long path of the game, presenting the replica genie's lamp to Alhazred results in Alexander's death.

Alexander: "I have this lamp, Alhazred..."
Alhazred: "What? How did you get that, you thief?"
Cassima: "Never mind, Alhazred. That lamp means nothing - it is a fake!"
Alhazred: "Blast it! Kill the devil quick, before I do it myself!"
Saladin: "If you refuse to defend yourself, you must have faked the letter. Since you cannot prove your point, I shall prove MINE!"
9. The letter "Q" in the Winged Ones' Alphabet represents which creature?

Answer: Caterpillar

Q: "This symbol represents faith, the caterpillar, the color turquoise, and the stone turquoise."

D: "The symbol represents tranquility, the mouse, the color sable, and granite."

O: "This symbol represents joy, the dolphin, the color azure, and sapphires."

G: This symbol represents purity, the unicorn, the color white, and air."

Fun Fact: DOQG are the four letters that comprise the Winged Ones' "Sacred Four" which are Tranquility, Azure, Caterpillar, and Air!
10. The Realm of the Dead is mentioned in vague terms by several characters on the Isle of the Crown, but before the Magic Map is obtained, it is never mentioned directly by its name. Which character(s) are the first to call this realm by its name?

Answer: The Sensory Gnomes on the Isle of Wonder

If Alexander fails to give the mint to Grump Frump, the Sensory Gnomes become aware that a man is near, and recite this rhyme:

"A man, a man, so say our tongue! To the Realm of the Dead we send this one!"

Because proceeding through the Isle of Wonder is necessary to travel to the Isle of the Mists, where the Arch-Druid explains the lore of the Realm of the Dead in detail, this is officially the earliest instance in the game where "Realm of the Dead" is specifically mentioned (despite having to die to hear it!)
