Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is raining. Which of these pokemon WILL get the first strike, if you ignore base stats and priority moves?

Answer: Magikarp

Magikarp has the ability Swift Swim, meaning it will be twice as fast when it's raining. Ninjask is naturally faster, but as we ignore the base stats in this question, he comes second, with only 1.5x speed, thanks to his ability, Speed Boost. Dewgong would still have normal speed, because none of the possible abilities affect Speed. Dewgong can have either Thick Fat, which halves damage from Fire and Ice moves, or Hydration, which cures statuses while it is raining. Gyarados has a base speed just higher than Magikarp's, but he loses the Swift Swim ability upon evolution, meaning his speed will be normal.
2. A Lanturn, Whiscash and Luxio all use Spark. Which of the attacks will be the most powerful? (They all have the same Atk, for the purpose of this question. Allow 1.5x STAB, too).

Answer: Luxio's

Luxio's Spark will be the most powerful, because of an extra ability known as STAB. It stands for Same Type Attack Bonus, and it means that a Pokemon using a move that is the same type as itself, the move will be more powerful.

Luxio's is the most powerful, because it is a pure Electric type, and will receive 50% STAB, increasing the base power to 97.5.

Lanturn comes second, because it is a Dual Water/Electric type, and receives 25% STAB, increasing the base power to 81.25.

As Whiscash is not an Electric type, it therefore receives 0% STAB, which means the base power stays at 65.
3. Which of these moves would be most powerful when used by an Ambipom? (It doesn't like to pick things up)

Answer: Double Hit

If the Ambipom doesn't like to pick things up, it therefore means that it dpesn't have the ability Pickup, and DOES have the Ability Technician.

Technician powers up moves with 60 or less base power by an incredible 50%. This means that Double Hit, with a base power of 35, will receive a 50% boost because of Technician, and another 50% boost from STAB! Plus, with hitting twice, this will bring the power of the move to an amazing 140!

How can you not want that?
4. An Arceus uses Judgment, and a Deoxys uses Psycho Boost. Who will do more damage?

Answer: It's impossible to tell

There are way too many unknown variables to calculate which pokemon would do the most damage. For starters, we don't know which forme of Deoxys is fighting, and we don't know which plate Arceus is holding (if any), so type matchups are impossible to tell.

The base stats are completely unknown as well, as Deoxys' different formes all have different stats. The base power can be calculated to a certain degree, but not fully, as we don't know if Deoxys is holding an item that might boost Psychic moves. Sorry guys, this one's just beyond anyone's knowledge (even mine).
5. You've just lowered a Pidgeot's accuracy with Sand Attack, followed up with a Confuse Ray to annoy it. What are the odds of another Sand Attack hitting the same Pidgeot?

Answer: 50%

If you can lower a Pidgeot's accuracy, it means that it has the ability Tangled Feet, which lowers the Accuracy of ALL moves (except certain strike moves, like Faint Attack) to a mere 50%. Although this can be useful on your behalf, you have to suffer the uncertainness of confusion to take advantage of the Ability.

There is also a rumor that a confused pokemon with Tangled Feet will also increase the Accuracy of moves that normally have less than a 50% hit rate (like Sheer Cold, for example).
6. It is raining. Your opponent has just used Protect. Which of these moves will NOT affect the opponent?

Answer: Aerial Ace

Of course Feint will affect. It's the exact purpose of the move! The only reason Thunder may hit is because of the rain. Because it normally has perfect accuracy in the rain, the chances of it breaking through a Protect barrier are the boosted accuracy of the move (30%). This tactic also works with Blizzard in a Hailstorm.
7. A Dewgong holding a Splash Plate uses Ice Shard. What will the power of this move be? (You can ignore type alignments, and use whichever STAB increase you find necessary)

Answer: 50

The holding of the Splash Plate does absolutely nothing for Ice Shard, as the Splash Plate powers up water moves, and Ice Shard is clearly an Ice move. It has a base power of 40, and as Dewgong is Dual Water/Ice type, the power gets boosted by 50% to 60.
8. A Careful Tyranitar with maximum EV's and IV's in Sp.Def has just entered battle. What will the Sp.Def of the Tyranitar be?

Answer: 492

You may have said 328, but as Tyranitar has the Ability Sand Stream, it summons a Sandstorm into battle, and boosts its Sp.Def by 50%, (because of it being a rock type) raising it to an incredible 492!
All Rock types benefit from this weather effect.

If you didn't count Tyranitar's Sand Stream boosting its Sp.Def, don't feel too bad.
9. Take a Blissey's base HP, and subtract from it a Linoone's base Def. What number will you have?

Answer: 194

A Blissey has the maximum 255 base HP, meaning it can max out at an amazing 714. Linoone's base Def is 61, and will max out at 243. 255-61= 194.
10. How effective will a Brick Break be against a Froslass?

Answer: 0%

Froslass is a Dual Ice/Ghost type, so fighting moves will do absolutely no damage against it. The only ways around this are by using a Pokemon that has the Ability Scrappy, or one that has used the move Foresight or Odor Sleuth. Neither of these tactics are particularly useful, though. Foresight and Odor Sleuth only use up valuable move spaces, and your opponent will likely just switch out straight away to cancel out the effect, and the only Pokemon with Scrappy are Miltank and Kangaskhan.
