Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you first arrive at Flower Bud Village, you have the choice of one of three properties. If you choose the River property, what is the official name of the property?

Answer: River Song Heights 4

River Song Heights 4 is one of the best properties to start out farming. You can grow a fair amount of crops if you sow seeds strategically, and the soil is fertile. The downside as explained is that it is a fair distance away from the city but on the bright side it is close to Spring Farm, the Workshop, the blacksmith and Blue Sky Ranch. River Song Heights 2 will later be occupied by Saibara the ceramics worker, provided that you have shipped one good clay. River Song Heights 1 and 3, may not have the most fertile soil but they are good places for raising livestock later.
2. One of the events that happens shortly after you arrive is receiving your first animal, a dog. Who gives you the dog?

Answer: Ellen

Ellen, Blue, and Hank all work at Blue Sky Ranch which is your one-stop for livestock so it would make sense that one of these would give you a dog. The gender of the dog is unknown so you may want to name it something that's generic rather than gender specific.

The dog will live in you house and if you pick it up and let it outside on sunny days, feed it some of your crops that it likes occasionally, and brush it, the friendship will grow. Ellen is the daughter of Hank, who is the owner of Blue Sky Ranch. Ellen is one of the bachelorettes if you play as a boy and her favorite item is the breadfruit, which can be grown multiple times in spring. Blue is the son of Hank, and is one of the bachelors if you play as a girl and his favorite item is hard to come by as it's Gold Milk which you can only get from a cow. Hank's favorite item is Good Mayonnaise which can only be gotten by getting a Good Egg and having a Mayonnaise Maker. Nina works at Spring Farm which is where you buy all your seeds and saplings and is the daughter of Liz who also works on Spring Farm.
3. In order to get some income, you need something to harvest. After cultivating your land with the hoe, you can plant some seeds. How many crops, not trees, that can be bought in spring, can be harvested multiple times without buying more seeds?

Answer: Three

The three crops are breadfruit, and the two that many people don't think about are grass and strawberries. At first strawberries can only be obtained by a random chance in a spring seed pouch. These seasonal pouches are handy since you can get some rare crops. Strawberry seeds can be obtained after shipping thirty cabbages. Strawberries are a favorite of Eve who works at the Moonlight Cafe, which will move in later, and Eve is a bachelorette. Breadfruits as stated before are a favorite of Ellen, but they also substitute flour in baking recipes so it is important to harvest some of these for yourself too. Grass doesn't have any real profit but it is still a crop. If grass grows, you don't have to water it, cut it down with your sickle and it will become fodder for later livestock such as cows, sheep, and horses.

However, you don't want to sickle the grass that is near your barn, you want it to grow some so that your livestock can graze, otherwise your animals won't be able to eat anything outside.
4. After doing your work, you may want to meet some people since they'll be helping you by selling supplies. You may even end up marrying one some day! Who is not an eligible bachelorette, if you're playing as a boy, when you first arrive to town?

Answer: Gwen

Believe it or not, you could end up marrying your rival Jamie, who will appear as a boy also if you're playing as a girl. The main words in this question are "when you first arrive to town" because Gwen, who works at the Perch Inn, is not in town yet but will become an eligible bachelorette later.

Her favorite item is the carrot, which can be harvested in fall. Nina who works at Spring Farm, likes Bluemist flowers which are very rare but other flowers such as PinkCats will work also. Ann loves ores, but I won't tell you which kind since that would ruin a further question, and she works at the Junk Shop. Jamie is kind of unpredictable. According to "Nintendo Power" her favorite item is cake so you will need to harvest some cocoa, some breadfruit, and start raising some chickens and cows if you want to do that. Cake is made from breadfruit, cocoa, butter, and eggs.

Other bachelorettes that will move in later include Katie, who works at Café Callaway, Maria who is the librarian and Theodore's daughter, and Eve who works at Moonlight Cafe.
5. Even though farming can be time-consuming work, you'll want to take part in the festivals and holidays. Given the life of an average first-year farmer, what is the only spring festival that you could make a donation to without buying anything?

Answer: Flower Festival

Chances are with you just starting out, you're not going to have a large livestock reserve. You could buy an egg from Blue Sky Ranch but you'll be wasting your money. Flowers are easy to come by. You can either plant them and harvest them, or you can find them up in the mountains.

It is important to try and participate later because you can get some good prizes for festivals such as the Spring Horse Race. Some prizes include a Good TV or fodder for a month.
6. During the day, you may need to replenish your stamina. You could catch some fish and grill them with your bonfire set, to make a meal. What item do you NEED to utilize you bonfire set...effectively?

Answer: watering can

If you think about your main goal which is to gather musical notes so you can return the Harvest Goddess to her original self, you may have remembered that you may have gotten the fire prevention note which you get when you extinguish you first fire made by your bonfire set.

However, once you get your own cooking implements and chickens, the bonfire set may become obsolete as you'll have more nourishing dishes. The bonfire set in the game includes matches, a matchbox and some tinder. The bonfire set is mainly used for heating foods such as fish and corn.
7. At the end of spring, days get longer and hotter as summer comes along. Even though a typhoon may come along, you may want to start raising livestock. Which one of the following do you NOT NEED to start raising chickens?

Answer: feed

Believe it or not feed is not a necessity, but it would be wise to have it and soon, because if it rains and your chickens can't go outside, they'll starve if you don't have anything to feed them. That may cause your chicken to get sick and die. You need lumber to build a chicken coop, and money to buy one. If you want to get feed, you can either buy feed from the Blue Sky Ranch, or a more efficient solution would be to construct and buy a windmill, grow some corn and make feed that way. Corn is grown in the summer and it can be harvested all throughout summer without having to buy more seeds. Rather than buying more chickens from Blue Sky Ranch, put an egg in the incubator because it is cheaper that way. Also if you buy a Mayonnaise Maker you can get more money for shipping your eggs if they're made into mayonnaise.

A chicken coop can hold a maximum of five chickens. If you let chickens outside on sunny days, you don't need to plant grass or feed them. They'll feed on weeds and grubs but make sure to take them back in at night. Chickens are one of the easier livestock to raise as you don't need to feed them much, except when they're indoors and some reassuring feed at night.

It is wise to stock some feed as they won't be able to go out during the winter.
8. How many crops, that can only be planted in the summer, can be harvested multiple times without buying more seeds?

Answer: Three

The three crops are Cocoa, Corn, and Tomatoes. For those of you thinking four because of grass, read the question carefully and notice that it says "only planted in the summer." Grass can be planted in the spring and fall also. Onions can also be harvested but only once. Most of these crops are important though. Corn is important for chicken feed, you can make popcorn with a pan, and Corn is the favorite item of Doug, Ray and Tim. Tomatoes don't serve much purpose except for gifts for Kurt and Nami. Cocoa is important for deserts as they are a substitute for sugar just as breadfruit is a substitute for flour.

It's important to harvest since cake is a great gift to give people and for Thanksgiving. You may want to plant some onions too to give as gifts for Michael and Gina.

Another good reason to raise all these crops is because it makes a great profit.
9. On a rainy day, you don't need to worry about watering crops. After taking care of your livestock, if you have any, you may want to grab your hammer, hoe, and some food and hunt for ores in the cave. What kind of ore does Ann like the best?

Answer: some other type of ore

There are five different kind of ores. They are in order from cheapest to most expensive: Junk Ore, Copper Ore, Silver Ore, Gold Ore, and Rare Ore. Rare Ore is Ann's favorite and Rare Ore can mainly only be found in the lower levels of the cave. However, be wary that when in the cave there are dangerous smokes that appear sometimes you want so stay clear of all of them except for yellow (makes you move faster), white (nulls all other gas effects), and pink gas (restores your health.) If you ship one of each of the five ores, you will get the Treasure Hoard Note. Two other things you may find in the cave are moonlight stones, which are used for the Firefly Festival and are Louis' favorite item, and limestone. Limestone may not get you much profit but if you ship ten limestones the Spring Farm will start selling fertilizer. If you sprinkle that over your crops they will double in profit. You need a hammer to smash rocks and crystals. You may want a hoe to find the stairs down rather than leaving your fate in the cracks on the floor. You also want food as using a hammer and a hoe can drain your energy. Be careful though, time still ticks away while in the cave so keep an eye on that.
10. One of the more important festivals in the summer is the Beach Festival held on Moonlight Beach. If you win the mini-game associated with the festival, what item do you get as a prize?

Answer: Power Berry

A Power Berry is a very valuable item as it increases your stamina level permanently. Also if you attend the festival and win you can get a musical note the Blue Sea, White Clouds Note. Other festivals during the summer include the Star Festival on the 7th, the Firefly Festival on the 15th, Fireworks on the 24th, and the Sheep Festival on the 29th.
11. If you haven't collected five musical notes by now, you should work on getting some. If you take your first five notes to the Harvest Goddess Spring, what percussive instrument do they turn into?

Answer: marimba

These four instruments are all percussive and belong to the mallet family. Chimes and crotales are also in the mallet family but that's not the point of this question. It is almost impossible to not get notes. Notes are very easy to find. You will almost always get a musical note for attending a holiday or festival. You'll get notes for certain shipments or a certain amount of activity on your farm. You can also get notes if you build a certain amount of a relationship with someone and they bring you an item. You don't have to collect all 100 musical notes to save the Harvest Goddess but a real completionist will be able to get them all.
12. As fall comes, so does your last chance to harvest crops, until spring arrives again. Crops include green bell peppers, orange pumpkins, and purple eggplants.

Answer: False

Despite the majority of these two statements being true, there is one word that makes this false and that word is the color orange. Pumpkins in the game are not orange but rather green. However, fall can bring in the greatest profit especially if you use fertilizer.

The prominent crops of fall including bell peppers, carrots, eggplants, pumpkins, yams and spinach all will net you at least 100 G each. In addition bell peppers, yams and eggplants can be harvested multiple times. Be sure to give some items as gifts though. Carl is a fan of yams. Gwen and Henry are fans of carrots. Liz and Lyla both like pumpkins. Maria and Woody like eggplant. Tai the blacksmith likes spinach. Be sure to put aside a pumpkin for the Pumpkin Festival on the 30th too.
13. When walking around you may have noticed some wild animals roaming around such as a raccoon or a sparrow. If you pick them up they may build friendship with you. However, there is one animal you don't want to have friendship with and actually want to hurt it. What animal am I describing?

Answer: mole

A mole appears in town occasionally and can be easily found because you will hear a continuous sound that sounds like you are taking something out of your rucksack. The mole is nearby and you want to whack him on the head with a hammer since it can ruin land. If you do this enough times you will get the Mole Whacking notes. Every other animal though you want to pick up and build friendships with them. Is there any real benefit in doing this? You'll just have to find out!
14. Another animal you would like to make friends with is the dolphin who usually swims near the pier at Moonlight Beach. If you feed the dolphin enough fish, it will offer to take you to "the island." What will you find at the island?

Answer: nothing

The island itself is barren. I suppose you could plant crops there but that would be kind of pointless. However, the island isn't a total jip. The island is an excellent fishing spot having some rare fish that can only be found deep in the ocean. You don't have to chase the dolphin down as it will swim up to the pier. You can give it a fish and/or wave at it to build friendship with it. Also the first time you go to the island you get the Island note.
15. After farming for a while, you may notice that space can get a little cramped. Why not buy some more land? Who do you need to have a good friendship with in order to unlock available land purchases?

Answer: Theodore

Even though Woody, Kurt, and Joe all work at the Workshop, which is where you purchase land, it makes more sense that you would want to build friendship with Theodore, after all he is the mayor. As you build a stronger friendship with Theodore, more land will become available.

However, in order to work efficiently, it would be wise to keep your land close together so you don't have to travel too far. Kurt's favorite item is the tomato. Joe likes turnips. Woody likes eggplants as stated before.

Theodore's favorite item is the potato. Land is pricey so you want to make sure to stash away some G for a rainy day. Like your original farm, you will have to clear any weeds or rubble. It's a good idea to use one plot of land for your livestock and another for crops.

However, be careful in your selection. If you take a plot that would be occupied by a business, they will never move in as long as you have the plot.
16. When you reach the top of Mt. Moon, you get the Rock Scaling Note.

Answer: False

Once again, the answer is false. You actually get the Rock Climbing Note. Sometimes, a bluebird will appear to reward your efforts and you will get the Bluebird note. You don't need any special equipment or extra food in order to make this climb. Oddly enough, Mt. Moon is the same name of the first cave level in "Pokemon" Red, Blue, and Yellow versions which is the only place you can catch a Clefairy in the wild. Mt. Moon also appears in Fire Red, Leaf Green, Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions of the "Pokemon" series.
17. As winter sweeps snow over Flower Bud Village, you will realize some drastic changes. One of these is that you can no longer count on your crops for income. You must rely solely on fish, ores, and livestock. If you have a barn and have entered it once, you know you have a pig. What name did the pig have before you named it?

Answer: Porky

How original right? Yes, the pig is actually the Gourmet's, but the pig, not surprisingly, is scared of Gourmet. Gourmet will say that it is his Porky but you get to name the pig afterward. The pig will live in your house like your dog and is able to find truffles, which a shipment of one will get you yet another musical note.

A barn can hold a maximum of eight animals at it's highest level. Horses, cows, and sheep stay in the barn. However, you don't want to buy livestock during winter unless you have harvested a lot of grass and ground a lot of corn in your windmill otherwise it will be very difficult raising them. You can't allow animals to graze when there's snow outside since there won't be anything. You want to make sure you have plenty of food since like every other season it's thirty days until spring. Also it will take a while for your animals to mature before they start benefiting you.
18. Another drastic change in winter is that the lake freezes and there's a new cave in the middle you can explore. Besides the regular ores in the other cave, you can find gemstones. What is the most valuable gem you can find?

Answer: diamond

Of course it's the diamond cashing in at 500G, however they only appear in the much deeper levels. Mostly you'll find ores, sapphires, amethysts, or topaz. Since rare ore can appear even on the first level it's easy to win the affection of Ann. However, unlike the other cave you must bring your hammer AND a hoe. If you get to level 10, you're not going anywhere but up unless you have a hoe and dig up the hole. Like the other cave, make sure to bring some food to replenish your stamina, and to take care of your livestock first.
19. Heading back to the subject of relationships, you may build a loving relationship with many eligible girls/guys, depending on what gender you're playing as. On certain holidays, you may get your first kiss from someone you've built a relationship with. What season can you get your first kiss, provided that you attend every holiday and festival?

Answer: summer

If you attend the Star Festival on the 7th of summer and you've been building relationships you can get your first kiss. Other holidays you can get kisses are the Moon Festival on the 9th of Fall, Starry Night on the 24th of Winter and New Year's Festival Winter the 30th/1st of spring.
20. It's quite possible that if you continue to build relationships you could get married to someone. Which of the following is NOT one of the requirements in order to be able to propose to someone?

Answer: live in Flower Bud village for at least one year

Although you would have to be extremely busy and wealthy to marry within a year it is possible. If you build a high enough relationship with Theodore, he will suggest marriage and tell you the person you have the best relationship with. However, until you upgrade your house to level 3 and get a double bed, you'll remain single. Once you complete those three tasks, Theodore will give you the item that will allow you to propose to your dream spouse. And if you get a spouse you get another note. Later on you may even have a kid. Well that's it for Poor SandK's Almanac. Hope it gives you some help in your life as a farmer in Flower Bud Village.
