Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This one should be easy. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta happens in which US state?

Answer: New Mexico

New Mexico is really a terrific place that has fascinating tourist attractions, a relatively temperate climate, and me!
2. The chief official of the Balloon Fiesta has a unique title, which is it?

Answer: Balloonmeister

I find this quite amusing, as do our local news anchors, but you can otherwise verify this, and many of the bits of trivia I've included, at the Balloon Fiesta's official web site.
3. There are several races each year at the Fiesta. In one of them, a balloon first takes off and follows a specific route to a predetermined landing spot, then a second balloon follows and tries to land in exactly the same spot. What is this event appropriately named?

Answer: Roadrunner and Coyote Race

Again quite amusing to me, especially with the Roadrunner being the state bird of The Land of Enchantment.
4. One of the most popular events of the Fiesta is when all the balloons with a special shape get together. During the evening this myriad of balloon creatures tether down, inflate and then each balloon lights it's torch so that the balloons all glow. They call this the...?

Answer: Special Shapes Glowdeo

The Special Shapes Rodeo is what they call the days devoted to the balloons that resemble "Tony the Tiger," "Bessie the Creamland Cow," "Smokie the Bear," and others. Glowdeo is just a clever way to describe the combination of that and the traditonal Balloon Glow.
5. What is the official name of the nutty people willing to be up in the air, freezing their butts off at 5:45 am (official time)?

Answer: Dawn Patrol

The Dawn Patrol goes up early to check out wind and weather conditions before tha Mass Ascension.
6. A couple of years ago, the Balloon Fiesta re-designated its home turf from the State Fairgrounds to its own Balloon Fiesta Park. Why?

Answer: All of these

Can you imagine, airplanes dodging balloons, and vice versa!
7. One of the more interesting events during the Fiesta involves Balloonists dropping things out of their gondolas to hit targets. While what is dropped may vary, the name of this event suggests that something in particular is dropped. What is this called?

Answer: Tumbleweed Drop

There are a whole variety of targets including playing cards in a game resembling "21".
8. The general Mass Ascension at 7:00 am only happens on which two days of the week?

Answer: Saturday and Sunday

It's worth giving up your weekend sleep in to see the sky full of over 1000 balloons, with the lovely Sandia Mountains as the background.
9. After some initial experimentation, it was determined that the fall was the best time of year to hold the event. Which month has been designated?

Answer: October

Hot Air Balloons need cooler temperatures to fly well. In the beginning coordinators held the Fiesta in the spring, but they learned that the New Mexico spring wind storms were not willing to reschedule.
10. In 1992 a sponsor added its name to the official title of the event. The official web site claims that this accentuates the claim that the _____ Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the most photographed event in the world.

Answer: Kodak

So that's it for now. I hope you enjoyed this quiz even a fraction as much as I have enjoyed the skies each October for as long as I can remember, and I hope to see you at the next "Kodak" Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta!
