Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How would you translate "of course" into Italian?

Answer: naturalmente

Of course it is "naturalmente"! "Di corsa" means running, or quickly, while "poi" means afterwards and "forse" means perhaps.
2. What about "morbid"?

Answer: morboso

Not "morbido", which is "soft", but "morboso". There is indeed a funny anecdote about some Italian talking about a "morbid blanket", while in fact wanting a "soft blanket". "Morso" means "bitten" and "morto" means "dead".
3. What is a "factory"?

Answer: fabbrica

Though it sounds so similar to "fattoria" (i.e. farm), factory means "fabbrica". "Fantasma" means ghost and "fucile" means rifle.
4. How would you translate "actually"?

Answer: effettivamente

"Actually" means "effettivamente", while "attualmente" means currently; "mai" means never and "chiaramente" means clearly.
5. What are the "parents"?

Answer: genitori

Yes, "genitori", and not "parenti", which is translated as "relatives". "Nonni" means grandparents and "cugini" means cousins.
6. What is a "mosquito"?

Answer: zanzara

It looks so much like a "mosca" (i.e. a fly), but in fact it's a "zanzara". "Ape" means bee and "vespa" means "wasp".
7. What does "currently" mean?

Answer: attualmente

Not "correntemente", i.e. fluently, but "attualmente". Adverbs often turn out to be malicious false friends, as also shown by "eventualmente", sounding so much like "eventually" and meaning in fact "in case", "if necessary". "Certamente" means surely.
8. How would you translate the Italian word "triviale" into English?

Answer: vulgar

"Triviale" means vulgar or coarse, coming from the Latin "trivialis", derived from "trivium", i.e. a crossroad of three roads, where such people as prostitutes or beggars and vagabonds would usually stay.
9. What does "dilapidated" mean?

Answer: cadente

It means "cadente" (referred to buildings). "Dilapidato" means wasted, squandered, and it usually refers to money. "Nuovo" means new and "ricostruito" means "rebuilt".
10. How would you translate "lime"?

Answer: calce

Indeed, it's "calce" (or "tiglio" if we are talking about the lime tree). "Lima" means file or rasp, while "limone" is lemon and "cemento" means concrete.
