Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the only state won by the Democratic candidate Walter Mondale in his 1984 race against Ronald Reagan?

Answer: Minnesota

Poor Walter won only his home state of Minnesota.
2. Which is the only state won by the Democratic candidate George McGovern in his 1972 race against Richard Nixon?

Answer: Massachusetts

George didn't even win his home state of South Dakota.
3. Which is the ony state to vote for the Republican Eisenhower over Stevenson in 1952, and then switch and go for Stevenson when the same two candidates ran again in 1956?

Answer: Missouri

Missouri has a history of quixotic voting patterns, as witnessed by the 2000 election in which it voted for Mel Carnahan for Senator, even though Carnahan had been killed in a plane crash during the campaign.
4. Which are the ony two states to vote for the Republican Alf Landon when he ran against Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1936?

Answer: Maine and Vermont

Landon couldn't even carry his home state of Kansas, which is usually reliably Republican.
5. Which are the only two states to vote for the Republican Willian Howard Taft when he ran for reelection in 1912?

Answer: Vermont and Utah

Denied the Republican nomination by a rigged convention, Teddy Roosevelt mounted a third party campaign and won six states, limiting the lackluster Taft to just two and handing the election to the Democrat Woodrow Wilson.
6. Which state was won by the Anti-Masonic Party in 1832?

Answer: Vermont

The Anti-Masonic Party was formed in 1828 and was the first third party on the U.S. national scene. It was the first party to hold a nominating convention and the first to announce a platform. By 1832 there were over a hundred Anti-Masonic newspapers in New York and Pennsylvania. Vermont gave its electoral votes that year to the party's candidate, William Wirt, and also elected an Anti-Masonic governor.

After 1836, however, the party declined and was eventually absorbed into the Whig Party.
7. Which election was the last time the sister states North Dakota and South Dakota voted differently from each other?

Answer: 1916, Wilson-Hughes

In 1916 North Dakota went for the incumbent Democrat Woodrow Wilson, while South Dakota voted for the Repbublican challenger Charles Hughes.
8. How about North Carolina and South Carolina?

Answer: 1964, Johnson-Goldwater

In 1964 South Carolina voted with five other Southern states for the conservative Goldwater, while North Carolina voted with the rest of the country for Lyndon Johnson.
9. Georgia and Alabama?

Answer: 1992, Clinton-Bush-Perot

In 1992 Georgia voted for the Democrat (and fellow Southerner) Bill Clinton, while Alabama went for Bush. Clinton also won several other Southern States as well.
10. Kansas and Nebraska?

Answer: 1908, Taft-Bryan

Nebraska went for the populist William Jennings Bryan, while Kansas stuck to its Republican roots with Taft.
11. Which of the following third party candidates did NOT win any states?

Answer: Ross Perot in 1992

Although Perot received an impressive 19 percent of the vote in 1992, he failed to win any states. In fact, he finished second in only two states, beating Clinton in Utah, and beating Bush in Maine.
12. Since the Civil War, which state has given its electoral votes to a third party candidate the most times?

Answer: Mississippi

Mississippi gave its electoral votes to third-party racist candidates three times, in 1948, 1960, and 1968. It was the only state to do so in 1960, distinguishing it from its neighbors Louisiana and Alabama.
13. Starting in 1896, when the nomination of William Jennings Bryan as the Democratic candiate began the ideological evolution of the two major parties into their present-day makeup, and continuing through the 2000 election, which states have voted Republican the most times?

Answer: Indiana and Vemont

The 1896 election was indeed an ideological watershed, illustrated by the fact that the outgoing Democratic President, Grover Cleveland, refused to support Bryan and instead actually endorsed the Republican McKinley. In the 22 elections from 1896-2000, Indiana and Vermont have each voted Republican in all but 4 years. Vermont went Democratic in 1964 and in each of the past 3 elections, while Indiana went Democratic only in 1912, 1932, 1936, and 1964.
14. Beginning with the end of Reconstruction after the 1876 election, and continuing into the 1960's, after which the civil rights movement altered the political landscape forever, the 'Solid South' could be counted on to deliver its electoral votes to the Democratic candidate. But which state was the most 'solid' of all, having voted Democratic in every single election from 1876 through 1964?

Answer: Arkansas

Gerogia and Arkansas both voted Democratic in every election from 1876 up until 1964, sticking with the Democratic Party even in the 1948 election, when Strom Thurmond's States Right's Party claimed the votes of 4 of their Southern neighbors. However, even Georgia succumbed to the Republican conservative Barry Goldwater in 1964, leaving Arkansas as the only state to vote Democratic in all 18 elections from 1876 through 1964.
15. When the results of the 2000 election are analyzed County-by-County, what percent of the country's area did the Republican George W. Bush win?

Answer: 80.7

If rocks and trees could vote, Bush's win would have been a landslide. Oh wait, I forgot, rocks and tress ARE represented under our Electoral College system. They come into play because of the two extra votes which each state gets, regardless of size. Take away those two extra votes from each state's allocation, and Gore wins the election.
