Great start, Moonraker. That "C" in the middle makes me think 1A is RACES.

1A Speedster's rights pulled apart by expert.

The right two letters of Speedster = RS
An expert is an ACE. So pull R and S apart by putting ACE in the middle.

But I don't know. Not a very elegant explanation.
