Marthasville was the original name of Atlanta. The city now known as Atlanta was established in the early 1800s at the southern end of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. At first it was called Terminus, then renamed Marthasville in 1843 after the governor's daughter. The name was later changed to Atlanta to reflect its ties to the Western and Atlantic.
