      1681. The Raphus cucullatus, or dodo, an odd-looking bird, was discovered in 1598 on Mauritius island by Portuguese sailors. Since it had never before seen a human, it showed no fear of them, so they called the bird "doudou", Portuguese for simpleton, believing the birds to be too stupid to be afraid. I guess they were right, because the sailors hunted them for sport and food, and the animals the sailors had brought with them on the island ate their eggs, sealing the fate of this curious creature for ever.

      It was the last play President Lincoln attended before he was assassinated.. Abe Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Boothe, a well-known actor at that time, on April 14, 1865, while attending the play "Our American Cousin" in the Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. The assassination was part of a plot to also kill both the vice-president, Andrew Johnson, and the Secretary of State, William Seward, in an attempt to eliminate those in direct line of succession and to encourage the Confederate troops to escalate the Civil war.
