1881. On the occasion Conan Doyle sketched a humorous cartoon with the caption 'Licensed to kill'.

Oscar Slater. Oscar Slater was accused of murdering an 82 year old woman in Glasgow. However, Conan Doyle believed that Slater was being framed and saw inconsistencies in the police's case against him. Slater was later freed.
1902. He believed that it was his pamphlet "The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct" which led to his knighthood in 1902.

Edinburgh. He was born at 11, Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland on the 22nd May 1859.
