Louisville Cardinals

The Governors Cup. The Governors Cup was first issued in 1994.
Howard Schnellenberger. Louisville native Schnellenberger helped turned the failing football program at the University of Louisville into the powerhouse that it is today. When he took the head coach position in 1985, the Cards had been in a six-year losing streak. In his 10 years at Louisville, Schnellenberger led the Cards to two bowl victories. The Cards beat Alabama 34-7 in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, finishing the season 10-1-1. The Cards were also ranked 11th in the season ending poll, the first time in the program's history to ever have a final ranking.
1958 Sun Bowl. Louisville beat Drake 34-20.
David Akers. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Akers played for the Cardinals from 1993-1996. Akers kicked a school-record 36 field goals, the longest a 51-yarder against Texas A&M in 1994. He broke the record for the longest field goal in the NFL Hall of Fame Game with his 55-yard field goal in 2006, surpassing the previous record of 54-yards.
Tom Jackson. Tom Jackson played for the Cards from 1970-1972, where he was coached by current ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso. Jackson was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1973. In his NFL career, he made 40 sacks, 20 interceptions, and appeared in three pro bowls.
All stadium seats feature chairback seating. Papa John's Cardinal Stadium opened in September 1998. The stadium seats 42,000. It is named after John Schnatter, founder of Papa John's pizza. John Schnatter has also committed an additional $10 million to fund the future stadium expansion which would increase capacity to 63,000. This project is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
Conference USA. The Big East conference was established in 1979. The Big East competes as a BCS conference in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the top level of NCAA competition in college football.
