Atlanta Motor Speedway. Dale Earnhardt finished second behind Jerry Nadeau in the last race of 2000. Less than two months later, while running third in the Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt was killed in a last lap crash at Daytona International Speedway.
Darrell Waltrip. Waltrip won seven races, two more than Petty, and finished only eleven points behind.
5. Kurt Busch won at Bristol, Atlanta, Martinsville, and Homestead. Jimmie Johnson won California, and swept the Dover races. Ryan Newman won at New Hampshire. Jamie McMurray, replacing an injured Sterling Marlin, won at Charlotte. Johnny Benson beat Mark Martin at Rockingham for his first win.
His father "CooCoo" died. Clifton "CooCoo" Marlin died of lung cancer on the morning of Aug. 14, 2005. Scott Pruett replaced Sterling Marlin and finished fourth in the race held on the same day.
Mark Martin. The inaugural race at the track was held in 1998. Mark Martin driving a Ford beat fellow Roush Racing driver Jeff Burton by 1.6 seconds.
Jimmy Spencer. Spencer edged Ernie Irvan by .008 seconds to claim his first career victory. Jimmy Spencer led only one lap in the entire race.
Darlington Raceway. Pearson's 105th and final career victory came on April 13, 1980.
Hampton, GA. Despite being called Atlanta Motor Speedway, it is actually in Hampton, Georgia. The same is true for Chicagoland Speedway which is in Joliet, Illinois, and not Chicago.
