Amazing Race 20
Dave and Cherie. After the Road Block, teams were given the last clue of the leg directing them to the second Pit Stop underneath a two hundred year old rubber tree known as El Gomero in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The first team to arrive, for the second consecutive leg of the race, was Rachel and Dave. They ended up winning a trip for two to Grenada courtesy of Travelocity. After their bus fell behind and they faltered during the Road Block, it was Dave and Cherie who arrived in tenth. They became the second team eliminated from the race.
The marketplace Road Block in Leg 2 involved calculating the average weight of which animals being auctioned off? | "The Amazing Race" 20.1
|
Cattle. Reaching Mercado de Hacienda de Liniers, teams needed to select a member to answer 'where's the beef?'. For this task, both members would proceed to the nearby marketplace to engage in a cattle auction. To receive their clue, teams needed to count the amount of cattle in the corral being auctioned off and use the total weight, given by the auctioneer, to calculate the average weight per cow in the pen. If they could relay the correct answer to the nearby gauchos before the lot was sold, they would receive their next clue. They could not use a calculator. Rachel, Rachel, JJ, Mark, Nary, Stacy, Vanessa, Danny, Dave, and Andrew completed this math-heavy task.
In Leg 2, teams needed to take a trip that was over eighteen hours by which means of transportation? | "The Amazing Race" 20.1
|
Bus. After the Detour, teams ended up needing to make their way to the Salta Bus Terminal to board a bus to the Argentinean capital city, Buenos Aires, an eighteen hour journey overnight. Upon their arrival in this major city, teams needed to head to Mercado de Hacienda de Liniers to locate their next clue, the second Road Block of the race.
The bus trip proved to be a trial for a number of teams-- an unforeseeable issue involving a broken window resulted in one bus falling behind by several hours.
Art and JJ. In the beginning of Leg 2, teams departed from the first Pit Stop at the Patios de Cafayate Winery in the middle of the night and were instructed to proceed to the Cafayate Town Square where they would receive their next clue from a mounted postman known as a chasqui the next morning. All ten teams ended up waiting several hours until the inevitable arrival and they obtained their Detour task. The first of these, 'Light My Fire', was completed by Art and JJ, who needed to gather forty pieces of wood and clay from a riverside, load it onto a donkey, then travel on foot one mile to deliver it to a pottery shop.
Misa and Maiya. After completing the empanada challenge at the Patios de Cafayate Winery, teams needed to get their bags and proceed on foot to the next Pit Stop on the winery grounds. The first team to arrive, by mere moments, was Rachel and Dave who ended up winning the Express Pass for their victory. The Express Pass could be used on any task up to and including Leg 8. In the end, although Misa and Maiya left the empanada task before Joey "Fitness" and Danny, their accidental neglect to see the Pit Stop merely a few meters away resulted in their elimination by only a few minutes.
In Leg 1, teams needed to compete in a competition involving the making of which national food? | "The Amazing Race" 20.1
|
Empanadas. After the Road Block task, teams needed to drive themselves through Cafayete, Argentina to the Patios de Cafayate Winery to find their next clue waiting at the entrance. For this task, teams needed to head inside to watch a demonstration about how to make meat empanadas and cheese empanadas; both types of empanadas would need to be crimped differently. Once teams made sixty of each type and had them approved by a chef, they would be able to race on foot to the next Pit Stop on the winery grounds.
In Leg 1, teams needed to make their way to Santa Bárbara, a town in which South American country? | "The Amazing Race" 20.1
|
Argentina. Heading to the airport, teams discovered that they needed to leave Santa Barbara, California and take a flight to Salta, Argentina to locate Santa Bárbara, a town in the Argentine countryside. Once they landed, they'd need to drive to the town's welcome sign to locate their first route marker. This task proved straightforward for the teams as they connected through Buenos Aires but the two-and-a-half hour distance between the two flights immediately put the back-runners into a rush to avoid elimination.
None of these teams were eliminated. After the Detour, teams needed to race by car and then on foot to the fourth Pit Stop of the race-- Piazza Castello. Art and JJ, with the Fast Forward clue in their possession, showed at the Pit Stop early on and won $5,000 each. In the end, Bopper and Mark, who fell behind back in Paraguay by taking a later flight (accidentally neglecting to visit a travel agency in the beginning, arrived in last place. This was, however, the first pre-determined non-elimination point of the race and they were spared. Because of their awareness of Bopper and Mark's family issues at home, Art and JJ gifted their prize to the last place duo. Bopper and Mark would also face a Speed Bump in Leg 5.
Salami. After finding the Tin Lizzie, teams received a single two-cent Euro coin depicting their next destination: Mole Antonelliana in Turin. Once teams took the elevator up to the top, they received their Detour, a task between 'Clean That Statue' and 'Name That Salami'. In 'Clean That Statue', teams drove to L'Arte Marmi to power wash a statue to a cleaner's specifications. Rachel and Dave, Vanessa and Ralph, Joey "Fitness" and Danny, Bopper and Mark, and Nary and Jamie did this task. In 'Name That Salami', teams traveled to the nearby Gastronomia Salumeria where they had to learn the names and tastes of fourteen different types of salami, travel through the market to a marked stall, and name them off properly to receive their clue. Brendon and Rachel and Kerri and Stacy finished this task.
Nary. At the Lingotto Building, teams received their Road Block tasks for this leg of the race requiring that one team member rappel down through the levels of the building to reach a dangling clue hanging 120 feet down. If the participating racer could not finish the task in two minutes they'd need to go down to the bottom, run back up, and start over. Rachel, Danny, Jamie, Vanessa, Rachel, Stacy, and Bopper finished this task. After the Road Block, teams needed to drive to the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile and use their Ford car's automatic parking feature before heading inside to find a Tin Lizzie containing their next task.
Art and JJ. At the top of the Lingotto Building, teams had the opportunity to attempt to claim the first Fast Forward clue of the race. For this, teams advanced to the helipad where they needed to land a helicopter. The catch? The helicopter was a remote-controlled toy; one would pilot the craft while the other would wear a helmet shaped like the Lingotto helipad. The clue would only be received if the helicopter landed on the helmet helipad. Art and JJ received this special clue after an hour of piloting and headed directly to the Pit Stop.
Turin. Recommencing their race in Asunción, teams departed from the third Pit Stop and headed to the travel agencies to book flights across the Atlantic. Teams split up, heading from Paraguay to Italy, landing in Turin the next morning. Once they landed, teams needed to drive themselves in brand new Ford Focus vehicles to the Lingotto building, once the headquarters and test track for Fiat. Running around the parking garage to the top floor, teams would locate their next clues.
Elliot and Andrew. After the Road Block, teams needed to proceed on foot to the next Pit Stop at the Escalinata de Antequera in Asunción. Here, Art and JJ arrived quite early-- a full seven hours before the penultimate team, Vanessa and Ralph. For their victory they won a trip for two to the Bahamas courtesy of Travelocity. Rachel and Dave, who stopped on the mat in second, dropped to sixth overall because of their penalty. Nonetheless, some teams couldn't complete the Detour fast enough. Vanessa and Ralph barely edged out Elliot and Andrew who, after several screw-ups during the Detour, couldn't keep up. They were eliminated in ninth place.
Rachel and Dave. After the Detour, teams needed to proceed to the Plaza de la Democracia to complete their Road Block task. For this challenge, one member of each team needed to balance a bottle on their head and perform a dance routine taught to them by a local dancer. Once they could complete the routine (including a position where they dropped to their stomachs) without breaking the bottle, they could receive their next clue. If they broke their entire table of two hundred bottles, they would be unable to complete the task and be forced to sit out a two hour penalty. After having used their Express Pass, Rachel and Dave failed to complete the task, taking their two hours at the next Pit Stop. The task was attempted by Art, Dave, Joey "Fitness", Rachel, Mark, Nary, Kerri, Ralph, and Elliot.
Express Pass. During the 'Strung Out' Detour task, teams were instructed to go to Universidad Nacional de Asunción to fully string a harp. This monotonous task proved difficult for teams as well with some stringing for several hours, but with careful attention teams were able to focus on their work. Brendon and Rachel, Bopper and Mark, Nary and Jamie, Kerri and Stacy, and Elliot and Andrew finished this task.
Rachel and Dave elected to use their Express Pass to avoid completing either Detour task. They proceeded with their next clue after attempting both options.
Watermelons. Upon arriving at the Metalurgica Punta de Rieles, teams located their Detour task, a choice between 'Stacked Up' and 'Strung Out'. 'Stacked Up' turned out to be the surprisingly difficult one. For this task, teams headed to the city's largest fruit market, Mercado Central de Abasto, to stack watermelons in a square pyramid with a ten by ten melon base. Art and JJ, Joey "Fitness" and Danny, and Vanessa and Ralph completed this task though many others attempted it and opted to switch options.
Asunción. To begin Leg 3, teams departed from their second Pit Stop of the race from El Gomero in Recoleta, Buenos Aires. This clue directed them straight to the travel agency to pick up tickets to the nearby country of Paraguay. Once teams landed in the capital city on one of two flights, they needed to make their way by taxi to Metalurgica Punta de Rieles where they could search the intricate metalworks there for their next hidden clue. The two flights were only two hours apart, so front-running teams needed to work fast to maintain a lead.
Joey 'Fitness' and Danny. After completing the Fast Forward, Rachel and Dave took a taxi to their sixth Pit Stop, the Boulevard Esplanade Estakada in Baku. Arriving in first place (their third victory of the competition), they ended up receiving a 2013 Ford Taurus SHO each. As the other teams completed their Detour task, they headed to the Pit Stop as well. In the end, Joey 'Fitness' and Danny were unable to catch up as they'd spent too long battling for the Fast Forward clue. When they checked in in seventh place, the last slot, they ended up eliminated and became the fifth team to leave the race.
In the Detour in Azerbaijan (in Leg 6), teams completed either 'Apples' or what other option? | "The Amazing Race" 20.3
|
'Oil'. Finding a clue at team Toghrul Karabakh Carpet Shop, teams chose either 'Apples' or 'Oil' for their Detour. In 'Apples', Nary and Jamie, Vanessa and Ralph, and Joey 'Fitness' and Danny headed on foot to a local fruit market to search the interior of a car full of apples for a single fruit featuring a little race flag on the stem (this included checking the carriage and the trunk). Meanwhile, Bopper and Mark, Brendon and Rachel, and Art and JJ completed 'Oil' which sent them to the Naftalan Health Spa. Here, after a customer bathed in crude oil for the health benefits, the teams needed to clean them off with a shoehorn.
Jamie. Heading to Occupational Training International in Baku, teams found a Road Block clue. This task required that one member of each team participate in a simulated helicopter crash performed in an indoor pool. Once they properly escaped the helicopter out one of the designated exits, they could swim to a life preserver containing their next bit of Route Info and head on their way. Bopper, Jamie, JJ, Brendon, Vanessa, and Joey "'Fitness' completed this unique task before taking a taxi to Old Baku's Toghrul Karabakh Carpet Shop.
Rachel and Dave. In Azerbaijan, teams received a Fast Forward possibility at Temple Ateshgah. This sent participants to Saman Ot Bazary where they needed to pull bales of hay off a large truck and stack them in a pile to very particular specifications: ten bales in length, three bales wide, and five bales high for a total of one hundred fifty bales. The first team to stack them accordingly received the clue. This was Rachel and Dave; they were allowed to head to the Pit Stop immediately thereafter.
In Leg 6, teams were told to fly to Azerbaijan, specifically to the capital city. What is the name of that city? | "The Amazing Race" 20.3
|
Baku. Leaving Landhannes Farm in Bavaria, the seven remaining teams headed to the airport in Munich and made their way to the city of Baku, Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea. Arriving at night, the teams headed to Temple Ateshgah and were told to wait until sunrise to receive their next clue. This allowed all of the waiting pairs to enjoy a festival with local dancers and performers at 'The Temple of Fire'. When they got their clues, they received a Fast Forward and a Route Info clue.
Kerri and Stacy. After the Road Block task, teams were directed to their next Pit Stop, a respectable drive away to Schwangau-Horn, Germany to find Landhannes Farm. Once they entered a fully-functioning barn full of milking cows, they found Phil and the Pit Stop mat. Art and JJ retained their lead for a third consecutive win. Their victory resulted in a trip for two to Thailand courtesy of Travelocity. Although Kerri and Stacy beat Nary and Jamie out of the Road Block, their directions to the farm proved insufficient and they arrived in last. They became the fourth team eliminated from the race.
For the 'Champion Male' Detour task in Leg 5 (in Germany), what did teams need to deal with? | "The Amazing Race" 20.3
|
Beards. For the Detour, teams choosing 'Champion Male' had to drive to Wetz-Stoa Stub'n in Unterammergau where they needed to choose a beard enthusiast and style their facial hair. Once they correctly shaped and formed the beard according to their photo, they received their clue. Art and JJ, Joey 'Fitness' and Danny, Rachel and Dave, Vanessa and Ralph, and Nary and Jamie finished this one.
In 'Fairy Tale', teams located a witch's house in the fairy tale city of Oberammergau. On the way, they needed to collect gingerbread pieces in the forest so that they could construct a gingerbread house for a local witch. Brendon and Rachel, Kerri and Stacy, and Bopper and Mark did this one. When they properly created their house, the witch handed them their next clue leading them to the location that inspired Sleeping Beauty's castle-- Neuschwanstein Castle.
Bopper and Mark. Arriving at the lodge in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bopper and Mark, who placed last in the fourth leg of the race (a non-elimination leg), needed to complete their Speed Bump task. This required that they dress in lederhosen and join a yodeler in a specific tune. Once they'd performed the task to the satisfaction of their teacher, they would be able to resume the race with the others. Otherwise, the other racers commenced their Detour task, 'Fairy Tale' or 'Champion Male', both of which were a short drive through Bavaria.
Austria. Coming out of the fourth Pit Stop at the Piazza Castello in Turin, Italy, the eight competing teams were told to head to the train station to make their way northward to Ehrwald, Austria. Once there they would need to take a drive into Germany, specifically snowy Bavaria, where they would need to locate the Gasthof zum Rassen in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and wait for it to open to receive their clue and a Travelocity Roaming Gnome.
Nary and Jamie. After the Road Block task, teams were told to proceed on foot through the nearby forest to the eighth Pit Stop on their race course: Lake Manyara. This Pit Stop would rest at a lookout on the shore of the beautiful waters at the edge of Mto wa Mbu. Bopper and Mark were the first to step on the mat in this leg of the race (for their first win) and they ended up receiving a trip for two to Hawaii courtesy of Travelocity. In the end, Nary and Jamie were unable to overtake the other teams after their late start and Speed Bump task. They became the sixth team eliminated from the race.
Brendon and Rachel. For the second detour task, 'Water Supply', teams needed to wait in a long line to a well and fill a cart full of empty jugs to deliver to a local household. Teams had no control over their line. Art and JJ completed this task.
After the Detour, teams headed to the Jack Stelzer Pub to find a Double U-Turn. This was used by Art and JJ to U-Turn Brendon and Rachel (forcing them to complete 'Water Supply') and also by Brendon and Rachel to U-Turn Vanessa and Ralph (forcing them to complete the same task). This was the only U-Turn used in the race. After this was complete, teams could move on.
Air Supply. Departing from the Simba Campsite on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning, teams were treated to a ride through the crater on safari to see many examples of the local wildlife. When the safari finished they needed to direct their drivers to Keratu to find a roadside stand with the name Hillary Clington. This is where they found their Detour task. For 'Air Supply', teams needed to use a bucket of water to locate the leaks in a bicycle tire, then use local materials to mend it and place it back on the bike. This task was completed by Bopper and Mark, Rachel and Dave, Brendon and Rachel, Vanessa and Mark, and Nary and Jamie.
Nary and Jamie. Completing their campsites, the teams were allowed to take their drivers and head to the seventh Pit Stop of the race near the Simba Campsite overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater. Having worked together well for the final task, Rachel and Dave were able to pull ahead of the earlier flight to take a second victory (their fourth overall). They won a trip for two to Costa Rica courtesy of Travelocity. At the end of the leg, Nary and Jamie fell behind due to a mostly-physical final task. Upon arriving at the Pit Stop they were told that it was a non-elimination leg.
Europe. The sixth leg of the race ended in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan, and that's where teams left off. Opening their clues at the Boulevard Esplanade Estakada, they were informed that they would be heading to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania for this leg. To get there, the remaining six teams flew Nariobi, Kenya and then onwards to Kilimanjaro from Baku and then transferred onto an additional charter flight at the Arusha Airstrip. There were three flights, each leaving a forty-five minutes apart; two teams went on each flight.
