Amazing Race 21
Amy and Daniel. After the Detour task, teams were told to proceed on foot to the Pit Stop at the Pasar Pabean Market. After weaving through the confusing aisles at this location, it was Natalie and Nadiya, who took the 'Fish in a Barrel' Detour alone, who ended up placing first and winning the powerful Express Pass. In the end of the leg, Amy and Daniel (who were the runners-up in Leg 1) were eliminated simply due to a bad cab ride, putting them in the back of the pack before the Detour.
|How many balloon sculptures did team members complete during the Road Block task in Leg 2 (in Indonesia)?||"The Amazing Race" 21.1
Eight. Arriving at the Genteng Kali Bridge, teams were presented with their Road Block task. For this one, teams had to choose a member who likes to party. This task involved hopping onto a portable kids amusement machine which could be pedaled to operate. While the participant kept the kids entertained they would also need to create eight balloon sculptures-- four animals and four hats (one each for each kid). James, Amy, Abbie, Jaymes, Lexi, Nadiya, Josh, Caitlyn, Will, and Rob completed this task.
Surabaya. In the beginning of Leg 1, teams needed to depart from Shanghai early in the morning and fly from Pudong International Airport to the city of SUrabaya, Indonesia. While nine of the ten teams connected through Jakarta, Rob and Kelley took a four hour layover in Hong Kong. Eventually, all ten teams made it to their destination across the South China Sea: the Alun Alun Stadium in Surabaya, where they had to take a numbered whip designating when they would leave (in order) at 8:00am.
Rob and Sheila. After the second Road Block, teams proceeded to The Bund to find a woman with an abacus to receive their next clue leading them to the nearby Pit Stop, The Bund Signal Tower/Observatory. Teams raced there on foot by it was Abbie and Ryan who arrived in first, ironically because Amy and Daniel told them where to find the final clue. As such, Abbie and Ryan became eligible to win the two million dollar prize. In the end, in a tight race between the four final teams, Rob and Sheila were passed by the Chippendales, Jaymes and James, and became the first team eliminated from the race.
Shanghai. Leaving the United States, the teams needed to take one of two flights to the city of Shanghai, the first carrying seven teams on China Air and the second carrying four teams on EVA Air. The flights would land the next morning more than an hour apart.
Upon arriving in Shanghai, teams needed to take a taxi to the Yaunshen Sports Center Stadium to find their first clue box waiting outside.
California. In the first leg of this season, eleven teams were given the good news at the starting line on the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena, California. This time around, if any team could come in first on both the first and last leg of the race, they would win two million dollars. Soon, teams were already on their way on a race through nine different countries. To get their first clues, the teams had to reach their bags at the bottom of the bridge. This was complicated by a ten storey rappel down the side completed by all eleven teams. They then needed to drive their Ford Escapes to LAX and catch one of two flights to China.
Gary and Will. After the Detour, teams were told to travel by taxi to Keranigonj Kholamora Ghat to grab a ride aboard a riverboat. This riverboat would need to take them to the other side of the river, specifically to Swarighat in Old Dhaka. Once there they could proceed on foot to the Pit Stop at Shambazaar Chan Mia Gha on the river's edge. James and Abba (with the Fast Forward secured) placed first and won a trip for two to Antigua courtesy of Travelocity. Gary and Will made a mistake late in the leg which forced them to cross the river twice, and despite other teams' bad luck it was they who were eliminated from the race in eighth place.
|During the Leg 4 Road Block task in Bangladesh, teams had to repair a bus. Who did not complete the task?||"The Amazing Race" 21.2
Abbie. Arriving at Rubel Model Auto Mobiles, teams were asked 'who wants to fill in the gaps?' For this task, one member of each team needed to get their hands dirty by repairing a city bus. First, they needed to create a specific type of putty used to seal holes on the side of the vehicle. They then needed to spread the putty to a proper consistency on the side before getting it okayed and sanding it down. After this, that member had to remove two sets of two seats from the back of another bus and bring them to a station to be refurbished. Only after this could they collect their next clue. Ryan, Natalie, James, Rob, Josh, Trey, and Will completed this task.
James and Abba. Arriving at Rubel Model Auto Mobiles, teams had the opportunity to go for their first Fast Forward in the race. This task would allow one team to skip all remaining tasks and head directly to the next Pit Stop. James and Abba were the only team to opt for this task. To complete it, they needed to travel on foot to three different locations in Dhaka acting as rat catching assistants. They needed to bring a large bag and fill it with dead rats collected from each location before returning to their starting point to collect their clue.
Dhaka. Leaving the SMA Negri I Bangil High School late in the evening, teams were instructed to fly more than two thousand six hundred miles to the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. Because there were no flights until ten in the morning, all eight remaining teams ended up taking the same trip via Singapore. Upon their arrival, teams had to hop into a taxi and make their way through the city to Rubel Model Auto Mobiles, a bus repair shop at which many of the city's public transportation vehicles are repaired and refurbished.
Caitlin and Brittany. After stopping in front of the Double U-Turn, the teams needed to take local transportation to the next Pit Stop at the SMA Negri I Bangil High School. Here, Abbie and Ryan were narrowly able to arrive in first place yet again (they'd placed first in the first leg of the race as well). They ended up winning a trip for two to the Fiji islands courtesy of Travelocity before being followed in by Trey and Lexi. In a very close finish, Caitlin and Brittany arrived in last place behind eternal underdogs Gary and Will because their driver took the wrong fork in the road. They became the third eliminated team.
Gary and Will. After the Detour, teams needed to head to Perliman Pos. I to find a Double U-Turn (and a Blond one, no less). Here, Rob and Kelley, one of the duos in the back pack, decided to U-Turn Gary and Will to force them to complete the 'Egg Head' Detour task. For this task they needed to purchase two eggs each from a local market and then transport them to Alun-alun where they had to have them cooked in flaming coconut husks on their head before eating them with hot sauce.
Gary and Will also decided to used the Double U-Turn, but inadvertently tried to turn around Rob and Kelley, who'd already checked into the Pit Stop. This had no effect.
'Lion's Head'. Once teams arrived at the Surabaya Gubeng Train Station, teams needed to hop aboard a train to the city of Bangil. En route, they would need to keep their eyes peeled for their next clue being handed out by a food vendor. Teams were inadvertently split onto two different trains and they received a Detour, a choice between 'Lion's Head' and 'Egg Head'. 'Lion's Head' was completed by everyone except for Josh and Brent. For this task, both team members needed to don large (forty pound) lion heads and traditional outfits, then perform in a procession around Alun-alun Park in Bangil. If they reached the end they could receive their next clue.
Java. In Leg 3, teams departed from their second Pit Stop in Pabean Market, Surabaya on the island of Java, one of the world's most populated islands. All nine remaining teams left within an hour and a half of each other with the lading four teams departing within fifteen minutes. Heading out, they were told to make their way to the Antika Jaya Padang Restaurant where their next clue box would be waiting outside. They were also told to exercise caution as there would be a U-Turn appearing somewhere within this third leg of the race.
Rob and Kelley. After the Road Block, teams were sent by taxi to their sixth Pit Stop, the mat of which was in front of a naval ship known as the Savarona docked on the Bosporus. Here, Trey and Lexi won their first leg of the race and took with them a trip for two, courtesy of Travelocity, to Australia. Although the race was a close one, Josh and Brent overcame the odds and finished in sixth place ahead of Rob and Kelley. This last team's choice to take the metro earlier on cost them a better position and, as such, they were eliminated from the race.
|During the Detour task in Leg 6 (in Turkey), teams chose to complete either 'Simit' or 'Scrub It'. What is a simit?||"The Amazing Race" 21.3
Food. At the spice bazaar, teams found a Detour task. Their choice: 'Simit' or 'Scrub It'. In 'Simit', teams needed to head to a local bakery and, using a large serving tray, balance local bagels, known as simits, on their head as they delivered specific amounts to three different restaurants in the area. When they returned with received stamps, their baker would hand over the clue. Josh and Brent and Rob and Kelley did this. In 'Scrub It', teams took bathing items and headed to a 16th-century Turkish bathhouse where they had to choose an attendant and get a full treatment (including deep tissue massage). Trey and Lexi, Abbie and Ryan, Natalie and Nadiya, James and Abba, and Jaymes and James completed this one.
Istanbul. Departing from Lok Shilpa Jadughar the next morning (and afternoon), the teams were told to head to the travel agency to start looking for flights to Istanbul, Turkey, a destination more than three thousand seven hundred miles away. All seven teams ended up taking the same flight to this unique city between Asia and Europe. When they landed on the European side, teams needed to take a taxi or the Metro to the Kabatas Ferry Terminal on the Bosporus. From there, their clue told them to head back to Asia, crossing the Bosporus by ferry, and find another clue box at the Uskudar Ferry Terminal.
Brent and Josh. After the Detour, teams needed to use their jute bags/bamboo logs to direct their taxi drivers to the next Pit Stop, the Lok Shilpa Jadughar in the Sonargaon region of Bangladesh. James and Abba pulled in in first place yet again (having avoided encountering any other teams due to their previous Fast Forward victory). They ended up receiving a trip for two (courtesy of Travelocity) to Malaysia. At the end of the leg, Brent and Josh were last to arrive due to a series of unfortunate mishaps in the sweltering heat of Bangladesh. They were, however, spared from elimination in this leg.
Jaymes. Arriving at Ferry Ghat Road under the Demra Bridge, teams found a Road Block task suggesting 'It's not heavy, it's a Road Block'. The selected team member needed to head into a nearby clearing with some wooden logs and, using rope and tools provided, construct a tripod scale which they would need to use to balance four large rocks with an equal weight of wood. When they could even out their own scale they could continue on. James, Nadiya, Abbie, Kelley, Jaymes, Trey, and Brent finished this task.
James and Abba. In the end of the leg, teams took a taxi to Sokolniki Park to find the next Pit Stop at the Veranda Tantsev. Here, Jaymes and James won their first leg of the race, narrowly defeating Trey and Lexi to the mat. For their win they received a trip for two to Costa Rica courtesy of Travelocity). After a frustrating leg, James and Abba were only able to land on the Pit Stop mat with one of their passports. As such, they could not continue with the race; they were eliminated in sixth place.
Josh and Brent. After the Road Block, teams needed to travel by taxi to the National Hotel in Moscow to complete their Detour task. For this one, they needed to choose either 'Movers' or 'Shakers'. In 'Movers', teams had to learn the choreography to a physically-demanding Russian soldier dance. If they could perform the moves to the beat of the music they could receive their next clue. Trey and Lexi, Jaymes and James, Natalie and Nadiya, and Abbie and Ryan finished this one. Josh and Brent finished 'Shakers' in which they had to attend a Russian cocktail party and identify the amount of people dressed as notable Russians (including Catherine the Great, Josef Stalin, etc.).
|During the Road Block in Russia in Leg 8, teams needed to work with brain teasers involving how many Russian time zones?||"The Amazing Race" 21.4
Nine. In the beginning of a rainy Leg 8, teams had to take a taxi from the Pit Stop in front of the Bolshoi Theater and travel through Moscow to the Russian State Agricultural University. Once there, they needed to find building six and locate Chemistry Hall #1 to locate their next clue and the Speed Bump. For the Road Block found here, one member of each team needed to attend a lecture featuring a few slides of Russia. The first would be the time in Moscow, the second would be a map of the country's nine time zones, and the third would list different cities on the map. Teams needed to properly calculate the times in five different cities within the allotted time of the test, hand it in, and get marked for their next clue. This took teams upwards of twenty-five tries to get correct. Lexi, Jaymes, Natalie, Ryan, Brent, and Abba were selected for this one.
|Despite losing their passports during Leg 7, were James and Abba able to complete the Speed Bump in Leg 8?||"The Amazing Race" 21.4
Yes. Because the race goes to several countries throughout its course, a passport is 100% necessary to remain in the game. Because Leg 8 continued through Russia, James and Abba had an extra chance to retrieve their stolen goods and continue on provided they were able to not only complete the other tasks but a Speed Bump in Moscow as well. Luckily, Josh and Brent were also strapped with a four hour penalty for not finishing the Leg 7 Detour. Although they spent a great deal of time early on speaking to authorities about a new passport/their stolen items, they were able to make it to the Speed Bump and complete it during the day.
James and Abba. After the Road Block, teams received a 100 ruble note inside a tiny canister. This was supposed to be used to clue teams in to the location of their next Pit Stop, the Bolshoi Theater. Trey and Lexi, having avoided any missteps during the entire leg, were able to jet ahead and place first for the second leg in a row (winning them a trip for two to Maui courtesy of Travelocity).
Although Josh and Brent were forced to take a four hour penalty because they were unable to complete the Detour before the pool closed, they faced it at the start of the next leg. James and Abba stepped onto the mat without their passports, but were granted a reprieve with a non-elimination leg.
Ten. After the Detour, teams needed to take a taxi to the Trees of Love atop Luzhkov Most. These trees, comprised of hundreds of padlocks meant to symbolize love, hosted the Road Block task. For this one, team members were required to use a large ring of keys to unlock one of ten locks securing a race ribbon to the trees. Each one of these would open another lock in succession. Once they had all ten locks off the ribbon they could pull their clue out from a capsule inside. Trey, Jaymes, Natalie, James, Abbie, and Brent completed this task.
|Which team was the only one able to complete the 'Alphabetize' Detour task in Russia in Leg 7?||"The Amazing Race" 21.4
Trey and Lexi. After visiting the statue park, teams were told to visit Moskvoretsky Most to find men dressed as Ivan the Terrible's guards. There, they handed over the Detour clue. 'Alphabetize' was attempted by three teams, but only Trey and Lexi were able to finish it before the destination closed at 4:00pm. For this task, teams had to travel to the Russian State Library and receive a list of books from a librarian. Using a card catalog system written entirely in Cyrillic, they had to locate four of the books on the list, then head into the library to find the four books on the shelves. When they handed the four books in, they could continue with another clue.
Moscow. Opening clues in front of the MV Savarona docked on the side of the Bosphorus River, teams were directed tot he airport to pick up tickets on a flight to Moscow, Russia. Because of the different routes, some teams flew through Amesterdam, some through Frankfurt, and some through Warsaw. As a result, many of the teams were bunched up upon arriving in front of the Zurab Tsereteli Sculpture Park which wouldn't open until 9:30am. Because of a missed connection in Warsaw, some of the teams were stuck at the back of the pack, unable to arrive in Moscow until eight hours later.
Natalie and Nadiya. After the Detour, teams needed to head to the tenth Pit Stop of the race atop the Castell de Bellver in Palma. Here, greeted by Phil and a greeter with no head, Trey and Lexi took their third first place win, this time receiving a trip for two to the Spanish Riviera courtesy of Travelocity. In the end, Josh and Brent maintained a steady course to take third place, their highest position yet, while Natalie and Nadiya were left in the dust at the Detour; their fourth place finish can be attributed to poor handling of their stick-shift vehicles and getting lost on the island. Luckily they were spared by the final non-elimination Pit Stop.
|During the windmill-themed Detour task in Leg 10, teams needed to repair how many blades on a windmill?||"The Amazing Race" 21.5
Two. If teams didn't want to complete 'Bull It' (which Jaymes and James, Brent and Josh, and Natalie and Nadiya didn't), they could instead drive to Sa Pobla to complete 'Spin It'. For this task, the teams needed to don toolbelts and head into a field to fix traditional Mallorcan windmills. To do this, teams needed to reattach two different blades to the structure using nuts and bolts. When these were properly secured, a worker would send them to men dressed as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza who would hand off the next clue sending them to the Pit Stop.
'Bull It'. Following the Road Block, teams needed to drive themselves to the town of Campanet to find the Coves de Campanet, a cave system found within the town. Here they would need to follow the music of two Spanish guitarists to locate their next clue. This would be the Detour task. 'Bull It', completed solely by Trey and Lexi, involved heading to the Plaza de Toros la Monumental in Muro where they had to dress up in a bull costume and complete a two minute trial of passing though eight matador capes and striking a ninth target to complete their task. If they screwed up the order of matadors at any time or hit any of them (including the ninth target) directly they would need to try again.
|In Leg 10, team members needed to hit twenty balls while participating in what sport for the Road Block task?||"The Amazing Race" 21.5
Tennis. Reaching Palma Cathedral, teams were told to hop into standard-driven cars (their first self-drive task of the race) and make their way through Mallorca to Manacor, specifically to the Centro de Alto Rendimiento. At this tennis complex teams would find the Road Block task which specified that one member of each team had to stand at one end of a clay court and hit twenty balls over the net (and in-bounds) shot across by an automatic machine to receive their next clue. If they failed to do so they would need to wait for a reload to try again. James, Trey, Josh, and Nadiya all dealt with what was served to them before heading out.
