Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Only Natalie and Nadiya completed the 'Fish-by-the-Barrel' Detour option in Leg 2. What place did they claim at the Pit Stop immediately after?

Answer: 1st

After collecting their Detour clue, teams could choose between either 'Ice-By-the-Pound' or ''Fish-by-the-Barrel', both of which sent teams to the Pasar Pabean Fish Market. 'Ice-by-the-Pound' was completed by nine of the teams, and it involved delivering ten 65lb blocks of ice from a factory to the market. Only Natalie and Nadiya went with 'Fish-by-the-Barrel' in which they had to sort through thousands of assorted fresh fish (in two barrels) using their hands and set up a stall in the market. They did so quickest, placing first in the leg (by five minutes) and winning the coveted Express Pass.
2. How many teams fell victim to the Blind Double U-Turn in Leg 3 (in Bangil, Indonesia)?

Answer: One

Receiving a Detour clue on the train to Bangil, Indonesia, teams had to choose between 'Lion's Head' and 'Egg Head', both of which took them by becak to Alun-Alun Kota Bangil. In 'Lion's Head', teams had to join a Javanese procession, wearing a forty pound mask on their heads and parading down the street completing a series of steps. All teams except Josh and Brent completed this.

Instead, the two did 'Egg Head' which required that they purchase four eggs to be cooked on their head (on flaming coconuts).

When they ate the eggs they could continue. After these tasks, teams located a Blind Double U-Turn. Gary and Will were forced to complete both sides of the Detour (by Rob and Kelley) but Gary and Will mistakenly used the U-Turn on Rob and Kelley (who were unaffected as they already passed).
3. In Bangladesh in Leg 4, teams could have either made an iron spike or which of the following local items?

Answer: Mattress

Both Detours in Dhaka (in Leg 4) sent teams out to craft something new. In 'Pound the Metal', teams had to take turns using sledgehammers to beat an iron rod into a tool while also operating a bellows to stoke the fire. Natalie and Nadiya, Rob and Kelley, and Trey and Lexi completed this. Four other teams (Abbie and Ryan, Josh and Brent, Jaymes and James, and Gary and Will) opted for 'Pound the Cotton' in which they had to make a cotton mattress, beating cotton clumps with bamboo and sewing a mattress shut. James and Abba didn't complete either Detour task, instead claiming the Fast Forward clue this leg.
4. Only one team opted not to attempt the 'Bamboo Jungle' Detour option in Bangladesh in Leg 5. Which team was it?

Answer: Abbie and Ryan

In Bangladesh, teams had to fight the humidity and heat in one of two physically-demanding tasks. In 'Bamboo Jungle', completed by the majority of teams, they had to locate scaffolding bamboo in a supply yard and transport forty poles of varying lengths to a construction site (using brute strength and a freight rickshaw. Only Abbie and Ryan went with the other option, 'Straw Dogs', which sent them to a local jute mill to whip jute on a plate of nails to untangle the coils, then carry a bundle to the factory's machinery to produce a bag featuring their next destination, the fifth Pit Stop.
5. In Istanbul, Turkey in Leg 6, teams could either deliver food or participate in a task at which of these locations?

Answer: Turkish bath

Reaching Istanbul's historic spice market, teams found Josh and Brent's Speed Bump, but also an Ottoman-themed Detour clue packed in with a box of Turkish Delights. In this detour, teams chose between 'Simit' and 'Scrub It'. In 'Simit', Josh and Brent and Rob and Kelley delivered hundreds of simits to three restaurants, transporting them by balancing them on their head (on a tray).

In 'Scrub It', the other five teams got a full wash at a local Turkish Bath.
6. Josh and Brent were unable to complete the Detour task in Moscow in Leg 7. This resulted in a penalty of how many hours?

Answer: Four

As is standard, the penalty for being unable to complete any Detour option is four hours; they served it at the start of their following leg (as they were not eliminated in Leg 7). For this leg, teams received a clue in Moscow, Russia asking them to pick between 'Synchronized' and 'Alphabetized'.

In the former, teams had to join a Russian synchronized swimming team and complete a routine in time with the music. Natalie and Nadiya, Jaymes and James, James and Abba, Abbie and Ryan, and Brent and Josh went to this task. Only Trey and Lexi completed 'Alphabetized' in which they searched for books in the Cyrillic card catalogs of the Russian State Library and then found them on the shelves to hand off to a librarian.

Although Abbie and Ryan and Josh and Brent planned to complete that task, it was closed before they could arrive; Abbie and Ryan completed 'Synchronized', but Josh and Brent were unable to do so before it, too, closed for business.
7. In Moscow in Leg 8, teams had the option of attending a cocktail party filled with historical Russian figures. Who was not present?

Answer: Boris Yeltzin

In Leg 8, teams chose either 'Movers' or 'Shakers'. In 'Movers', teams had to learn and perform a Russian soldier dance. After getting taught the punishing routine and performing in time with the music, Trey and Lexi, Jaymes and James, Natalie and Nadiya, and Abbie and Ryan collected their clue.

In 'Shakers', Josh and Brent attended a cocktail party to meet and identify the numbers of people dressed as Catherine the Great, Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, Leonid Brezhnev, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Peter the Great, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Nicholas II of Russia, and Vladimir Lenin. James and Abba, marred by passport issues, did not attempt either Detour task, ending up eliminated on technicality at the end of this leg.
8. Which is the only team that completed two Detour tasks in Amsterdam in Leg 9?

Answer: Abbie and Ryan

In Amsterdam, teams completed either 'Back in Time' or 'Organ to Grind'. In 'Back in Time', teams needed to recreate Rembrandt's 'The Night Watch' with live extras dressed in matching garb. Abbie and Ryan and Josh and Brent completed this task. In 'Organ to Grind', teams had to locate one of three street organs and operate the devices while asking for tips. Once they collected thirty Euros they collected their clues. Jaymes and James and Trey and Lexi did this one. Following this task, teams found a Double U-Turn in the gardens of the Museum Geelvinck whereupon Jaymes and James sent Abbie and Ryan back to complete 'Organ to Grind'. Tactically, Trey and Lexi used the second slot to U-Turn Jaymes and James who, having passed the board already, were not required to complete the second task. Natalie and Nadiya completed neither task, having won the Fast Forward.
9. What Leg 10 Detour task (in Mallorca) was completed by more teams?

Answer: 'Spin It'

Finding a clue at the Coves de Campanet in Mallorca, Spain, teams were presented with two tasks. In 'Spin It', completed by three of the four teams, racers had to drive to Sa Pobla and assist in repairing a 400-year-old windmill, reattaching two blades to a mill tower. Only Trey and Lexi completed 'Bull It', in which they had to become the bull at a 1000-year-old bullfighting arena, butting the capes of matadors in a marked order. Trey and Lexi completed their task on the second go, leading them to a first place win.
10. How many people could complete the either of the final Detour tasks (in France in Leg 11) at the same time?

Answer: Two

In a rare instance, Leg 11 had a limited-space Detour task in which only two teams could complete the task at a time. 'Chow' required that teams make a daily meal for hunting hounds by sorting, weighing, and cutting different types of meat for a meal that they would need to present to the hungry dogs. Josh and Brent and Natalie and Nadiya completed this task. Jaymes and James and Trey and Lexi completed 'Plow' in which they had to use a traditional horse-drawn plow to till four furrows in a field. Both tasks were completed at the Château de Cheverny in France's Loire Valley.
